“Wonderful owners, but not a nice place”
Reviewed 18 April 2014

We stayed at Le petit paradis due to the many good reviews. Unfortunately we were not too satisfied. The rooms are more open shacks which is not really helpful during rainy days on Domenica. We didn't feel too comfortable as rooms are a bit cold and you could hear everything during night and in the morning (e.g. rain, chickens, cars...). But on the plus side are the overwhelming friendly owners who help you with everything. They even picked up our luggage in town which got lost on a LIAT flight. Further breakfast and as we heared all the meals were delicious! Also a pluse are the close hot springs which are specially nice at night.

This is not a luxury resort, but is ideally designed as a base for hiking Dominica. We had the Bois Bande room which is large with its own shower and toilet but very, very basic. Breakfasts and dinners are great but you do not have a choice, Joan makes big and flavourful meals but you get what she decides for the night. Different from having a menu to choose from but we were never disappointed. If you are going hiking for the day she will also prepare a lunch for you - kind of like have your Mom do it for you.
Location is perfect. Located with easy access (either by walking or short taxi ride) to some highlight hikes, Boering Lake, Boiling Lake, Trafalgar Falls, Middleton Falls, Segment 4 of the National Trail. Definitely try the Hot Springs in the village of Wotten Waven, although they don't look appealing they are great. Tia's is a 10 minute walk and offers a nice restaurant with big meals and a limited choice of items.
Petit Paradis is more like staying at someone's house than a B & B. You are in a small village with all the charm and realities - roosters that crow early and constantly, cars driving by, neighbours shouting, and everyone very friendly and relaxed. Bus service to town is great, right at the doorstep, cheap, easier than it seems, a little challenging at first but a must way to travel if you want to know Dominica.
Great value, rooms are clean but basic, almost like one step above camping but with great hosts. Joan and Al look after you like family. If you expect to be pampered, you will be disappointed, but it is a great place to "rough it" to take advantage of what Dominica offers in spectacular hiking and culture and people.

Room Tip: From a personal standpoint we would spend the very few extra dollars for the private shower and toil...

We stayed here nearly a week and had a room with our own toilet, sink, & balcony. Room was clean & bed was comfy. Very basic smaller room. We used the shared shower area (3 stalls), and I found I could only get hot water in shower #2! We only had dinner here once, as it was served a bit late for us (7:30), but it was tasty! We utilized a small shared kitchen area to make our breakfast on a stovetop & eat which was really handy. This village is noisy with birds chirping, roosters cock-a-doodle-dooing, dogs barking, rain downpours, and people shouting - so you may want to look elsewhere if you can't get used to sleeping through or with those noises. We didn't have any complaints - the owners Joan & Al were friendly and always available if we had a question/concern.

Room Tip: We had the Cherry room which had two twin beds.

We began our stay in Dominica in this Guesthouse. Very good value for money, excellent restaurant. Joan is used with travellers, knows her region and understands if you don't have much money. You can camp in the backyard or get a cheap but clean room without private bathroom. And use the outside kitchen. And Wotten waven is a good start for the Trafalgar falls visit and most of all for the hot spas, you'll find in this little village.

We really enjoyed staying with Joan and her family.
We stayed in one of the rooms with "outdoor" shower (with hot water). Good value for money.
Dinner was a delight in the lovely upstairs restaurant, Joan treated us to the best of the local food.
Very well situated for trekking as the village is at the intersection of two sections of the fantastic Waitukubuli trail and near the Boiling Lake hike.
Joan's son is very kind and a good taxi driver for getting to the start of the trails, or other towns.
And last but not least, just up the road there are some outside sulphur baths (Ti Kwen Glo Cho), I would recommend going when it is dark, as it is quite magical to lay in the warm water with the stars and moon above.

We spent 5 days at Le Petit Paradis. The guesthouse is in a charming village about 15 minutes up from Roseau (by car).

We had a room in the hikers quarter. The rooms are nice, maybe a bit small, but all in all very comfortable and are equipped with the basic necessities. In these room you don't have your own shower, but the common "rustic" showers are very nice. The owners are very kind and lovely people, who really make you feel very welcome. One of the nicest things about the guest house is the open terrace restaurant, where you can easily mingle with other travelers while enjoying good food prepared by Joan. Be sure to try the local beer, Kubuli, and the guesthouse's special punch.

There is a lot of things to do in Wotton Waven. If you are up for a 6 hour hike, you should definitively hike to the boiling lake. We asked Joan to book us a guide to take us there. We hiked up with Michael who is a great guide, an experienced guide who will make sure you make it to and back to the boiling lake. He knows a lot about the environment and has great stories to tell. Be sure to take swimming gear with you because a dip in Titou gorge after the hike is a must!

There are two spas in Wotton Waven. We went to Ti Kwen Glo Cho, a 5 minute walk up the hill from the guesthouse. This in our mind was the better choice out of all the spas in the area.

The luxury you can get here is not in the things, but in the hearts of the people. They love you here. Be prepared to participate in village life the best you can during your stay. I had one of the roadside rooms. "Road" is just the steep narrow street leading from bottom to top of the village. Just a cheap place to sleep under a mosquito net for the night and put your stuff away for the day. Breakfast and diner is rich, and at moderate prices for Europeans. The Waitukubuli National hiking trail passes right outside the gate and takes you to Valley of Desolation and Boiling Lake. A difficult hike that you should not do without a guide. Anyway the location is perfect for hiking. Sulphur smells come from the source down the valley, you will get used to it quickly.
