This was our second trip to Greyfield and Cumberland Island. I was glad to see that things had remained the same. It is one of the most stress free places I have been. Everything is taken care of for you. This island is so unique that we had to share it with our two grown children and their families. One word of warning, if you cannot be happy without shopping, cars, golf courses, tennis courts and whatever then you probably shouldn't go. However, if you like to be pampered with good food, relax on an undeveloped beach, see barrier islands as they were intended, and a touch of history then by all means I would not hesitate to go.

Room Tip: I prefer staying in the cottages because they seem a little more private. You an take advantage of...

Much of what others have said need not be repeated; this is an amazing place and a very unique experience. Just don't have your expectation level too high. We stayed at a B&B on Amelia Island the night before we took the ferry to Cumberland, and the noticeable difference between the 2 properties (aside from the obvious location and step back in time) was the level of service. The B&B innkeepers were friendly and personable and you had a better feeling for the place as a result of getting to know them; there was a sense of place. The difference at the Greyfield is that there is no one person or couple who represents the "face of Greyfield" in the same way that the innkeepers at the B&B did. The innkeepers - if they were even there- never introduced themselves, and our only contact during our 3 days there was with a series of naturalist guides and college-age kids working there for the summer. They were friendly, but not much more, and you got the sense that they were transient employees with no real or long-lasting connection to the house or the island. That being said, the island itself and the history and nature to be experienced are still worthwhile. Just don't expect too much, and you will thoroughly enjoy the place.

This place is a special treat. The rate is all inclusive except for alcohol. The rooms are lovely and very clean. The food is delicious. The entire home decor is the way that it was when the Carnegie family lived at Greyfield. The owners have painstakingly preserved the home and grounds. Staying here is like a trip back in time. The Ferguson family made us feel like we were guests coming to stay during that time period.

In regards to the location, about 80% of Cumberland Island is under the supervision of the National Park Service. The island is very unspoiled. The NPS is guarding the flora and fauna. The beach is within biking distance of Greyfield and it is one of the most beautiful we have ever seen.
The Naturalist tours are informative and fun-- allowing you to experience the natural beauty of the island.

The Ferguson family and Greyfield staff are the best. We can't wait to go back again!

Only 300 people per day are allowed on the 36,000 acres of beautiful Cumberland Island, and that's a large part of what makes Greyfield Inn, the only overnight option to camping on this barrier island, such a special experience.

The inn itself is spectacular, a remarkably maintained relic of the Gilded Age that has you living like a Carnegie on vacation. The food is consistently outstanding and healthy, with plenty of fresh vegetables from the local garden. The rooms are appointed with quality antique furniture and original claw-foot tubs. The expansive front porch is the ultimate reading room with plenty of rocking chairs, porch swings, and steady ocean breezes. A barn full of bicycles awaits you whenever you're ready to explore.

And exploring the island adds vacation value well beyond the inn itself, with the very low population setting this apart from the typical beach vacation. Cumberland Island's beach is one of the most beautiful and widest on the east coast, broad and gently sloping, and with no man-made structures looming over it; you can walk for miles without encountering another person. If the beach gets too warm, you can ride your bike on miles of cool, shaded roads and paths through the mesmerizing maritime forest full of live oaks, Spanish moss, grape vines, and palm undergrowth. There's plenty of history, including the immense tabby ruins of the Dungeness mansion and the newly restored Plum Orchard mansion, which serves as a house museum. And when you need a break from exploration, there's always a rocking chair on that beautiful front porch to welcome you back with a good book.

In short, it's an authentic Gilded Age experience, in which you dine, sleep, play, and relax like a Carnegie in an unspoiled, exclusive island that has changed very little in over a century. While the room prices may at first seem steep, they're not. Taken as a total package, Greyfield Inn and Cumberland Island are a great value.

The Greyfield Inn is unique and definitely not for everybody. It is on Cumberland Island which is undeveloped and like taking a step back in time. The inn is a graceful old mansion that still looks like it did a hundred years ago - and the plumbing is also that old! - but the place has an indescribable charm. The wild horses roaming the grounds, the trees with swaying Spanish moss, and the big quiet porch are all part of the charm. There is no TV or phone in your room. There are no stores or restaurants. The meals are very well prepared, and at dinner, men wear jackets - otherwise the place is very casual. I would investigate this inn if the above sounds interesting to you, but know what you are getting into. I love this place.
