My husband I recently 3 nights at Greyfield Inn and it was truly an experience of a lifetime . We felt we had stepped back in time to a beautiful by gone era. Everything and everyone was perfect . We stayed in the Big Cottage and even though it was somewhat hard to leave the big house after dinner we throughly enjoyed our little walk across the lawn to our separate little pardise . We had 2 lovely private patios which was so nice for reading and enjoying the picnic lunch .
The tours were wonderful . Kayaking was great even though there were alligators along the shore !
Bike riding awesome and the food !! Incredible .
Thank you Greyfield Inn. My only wish is hopefully to return some day .

We stayed two nights in late April, and loved it here. I'll be honest. Before we reserved, my husband was nervous that it would be stuffy (given the sports coats at dinner rule) and that he wouldn't enjoy it. But his reaction upon seeing the wild horses (including a foal) grazing on the grounds was fantastic, and as the hours went by, I could see him relaxing. (I was pretty relaxed from the beginning.)

Although expensive, we loved the fact that everything was included and there was no need to even carry a wallet. We reserved late, so could not get a room with a private bath, but that wasn't an issue at all! I actually particularly loved my shower in the outdoors shower house -- kind of like camping with elegant toiletries and towels.

It was great to be able to run down to the kitchen if we needed something, and the "Honest John" bar is a nice touch. We rode bikes all over the island, and even got up early one morning to visit the Dungeness ruins, with wild turkeys, white-tailed deer and more horses. We also did the naturalist tour to the north part of the island and Travis was very knowledgeable. And, of course, basically having the beach to ourselves was a wonderful novelty.

Thank you for the great stay!

Our wonderful experience began the moment we stepped onto the "Lucy Ferguson" ferry for a very scenic and pleasant ride to Cumberland Island. The staff was excellent: young, professional, and non-intrusive. Our luggage was handled from the moment we arrived at the Fernandina Beach dock, delivered to our room, then picked up and returned to the dock upon departure.

We loved our "Little Cottage room": large room and private bath; open and airy. Meals were 5-star, obviously chef-prepared. Dietary restrictions were arranged in advance and accommodated above and beyond the usual expectations. The fresh seafood was amazing and delicious. Dinner at the Greyfield is definitely a memorable and special experience! Dressing for dinner was a nice throwback to a time (not too long ago) when people wanted to dress up and look nice for the evening meal.

We really enjoyed the naturalist's tour of the island. Our guide was very knowledgeable and personable. We did see an alligator in the pond at Plum Orchard!

The hike through the overhanging trees down to the beach was fun, and biking to Dungeness ruins was breezy and enjoyable. Our time on the beach was peaceful, the beach area is unspoiled and completely natural. Seeing dolphins, wild horses, bald eagles as well as numerous sea birds only added to the experience.

It is very pleasant to walk or bike to the areas on the Greyfield property as well as the rest of the island. The near absence of vehicles is relaxing and the exercise helps work off the delicious food.

Turn off your cell-phone, close your computer, and sit on the front porch and enjoy the beauty surrounding you. A stay at the Greyfield is an exquisite, elegant, step decades back in time!!

Oh! To the reviewer who gave this property an overall "Terrible" rating because he missed the boat (yes, as we were told in advance, it leaves on-time), then spent his time interrogating other guests as to why the captain didn't inconvenience these punctual guests and wait for him: Don't you think it's time you matured and began taking responsibility for your own actions - or inaction? Would you have cut it that close for a plane? A train? Was your overall stay here really "Terrible"? We really can't see how, based on our own experience and that of others. Our opinion is that your review, along with your person, missed the boat.

My husband & I recently spent 3 nites at the Greyfield Inn celebrating our anniversary. We had previously stayed 14 years ago and to say that nothing has changed is TRUE! The best things about our stay were the naturalist tours, the staff, the swings on the front porch & the overall experience of a homey accommodation in such an unspoiled natural setting. In our room was a guest card to complete to offer suggestions for changes/improvements...I decided against completing it because I felt as though it may not have any effect. I will write my suggestion here instead! I believe the Greyfield would greatly increase the pleasure of their guests by having a fleet of 12 to 15 golf carts!

Room Tip: Having a private bathroom will be worth it!

We went for 2 nights as it is the advertised minimum stay. There are other ways if visiting as we found out from the people we met: a few ladies only came down for dinner (on the ferry, 5pm-9pm) and there was a couple that only stayed one night and 2 full days. They walked into the Greyfield office in Fernandina beach and booked that morning.
You get to experience what it was like to be a guest or a member of the very wealthy family and spend your time on the island. You really feel at home because the way the Inn is ran, the layout and the interaction with the people working there as well as with the guests.
It is very informal, but at the same time it is very grand. Rooms are beautiful (did not like the shared bathroom, just because I was worried I would need it in the morning and it might be busy...which didn't happen).
You can stay busy with the 2-3 tours they offer. I really enjoyed them, you get to see all the island has to offer, very interesting and beautiful scenery. Did not take the bikes, preferred to walk around a little.
The weather was perfect when we went the first week of April and the bugs were not too bad (you need bug spray). They have a basket outside by the stairs with sunscreen and bug spray, very much appreciated (the avon products they sell are too expensive).
It is a unique place to visit, expect the luxury from the 1900 (not the Four Seasons) and soak in all the different experiences

What a wonderful elegant and peaceful retreat. Four friend arrived by launch from Amelia Island, we were backed for one night stay at the Greyfield Inn. Arriving about 10 am we were received by a knowledgeable employee who gave us a tour of the property and available activities. It is an elegant place yet very rustic, simple elegance is more like it. The fragrance of flowers were in the bathrooms and in all the public rooms, lovely soaps and lotions and beautiful linen . Everyone involved with the Inn were thoughtful and nice. We shared rooms in the large cottage, which had airy rooms and each room had an outside siting area. Our cottage had an outdoor shower as well. All the meals were delicious, made with wholesome ingredients and organic foods. Dinner was lovely, candlelight dining with delicious food. The kitchen was open to all guest and you could have something to eat at anytime during the day or night. Everyone seemed to enjoy this get away from life's hustle and bustle, guests were very open to new friendships and willing to share themselves.
We used bikes to ride to the beach which was out of this world, we traveled in an open truck with sits in the back to the island's museum, Carnegie mansion ruins and also to the north side of the island. Cumberland Island was just beautiful,so peaceful and quiet, it gave you the feeling that you were back in time on a pristine island.

Room Tip: I hear that some rooms in the main house have a shared bath.

We were really excited to be going after reading reviews. The peaceful location and history are pluses. The food and limited menu is definitely a negative. Breakfasts were OK, lunches were good and dinners were really borderline and there was no choice. The dinners were eclectic which did not appeal to everyone. Our room was on the 4th floor, 54 steps was a negative which required a little daily planning. The room itself was great with the exception of no control of the thermostat. The employees were quite good and attentive as a whole.

Room Tip: Room of the library. Most rooms have shared bathrooms
