Innkeepers Kelly & Jeff very friendly and welcoming. We felt at home. The inn is a spacious "homey" Victorian style house with great library and large parlor. One can relax on the porch or by the pool and enjoy the complimentary wine and coffee cake. We had the downstairs room which had a comfortable king size bed and huge bathroom. Although not a problem during our visit, light sleepers may have a problem with this room as it adjoins the library with a television on one side and the dining area on the other side. Jeff's shrimp and grits breakfast very tasty.
The inn is located on the quiet town square. Neighborhood is great for walkers and one can walk to the riverfront to watch the shrimp boats. During our visit Fort King George had its annual Scottish festival and recreation of an attack of the fort - very interesting.
Eating facilities are in short supply in the town. Skippers restaurant was very good and relaxing at the town's wine bar talking with local residents was very nice.
Overall, Darien is a great place to relax and walk. Youngsters & teenagers most likely would not find much of interest to keep them happy.

It was a wonderful experience from the moment I arrived. I spent one week alone at this charming and graciously appointed B&B and have wonderful memories of my experience. The owners were fun, kind and extremely welcoming. This B&B made me feel like I was back in my childhood home, surrounded by beautiful flowers and live oak trees. Conveniently located, the B&B allowed me to walk down to the boat docks and get fresh shrimp from the boat captain. I frequented the nearby restaurants, and visited Cumberland Island, Jekyll Island and a wildlife reserve. The B&B was very family friendly with a baby and a young couple visiting and a separate unit attached to a yard for a family to bring the beloved dog. The owners went out of their way to take care of the unique needs of each of their guests. I can't wait to go back!

We booked our trip a month ahead of time, but when we got to the B&B they didn't have a room for us! They said we must no have completed the reservation process, but they had even told us what room we were saying in on the phone and didn't mention anything else we needed to do. After telling us there wasn't a room for us, they didn't offer to help us find another place to stay even though we'd driven 500 miles to get there and was not familiar with the location. They did not seem concerned at all.

We stayed at Open Gates Bed & Breakfast in Darien, Georgia for six nights, and we give this B&B the highest recommendation possible. Kelly and Jeff, the owners, were the absolute best anyone could ask for in a host: they were super friendly, genuinely interested in making sure we enjoyed our stay, and attentive to our every need. Open Gates B&B is just the place to go to experience the “southern hospitality” Georgia is famous for. We felt so welcomed at this place and we can’t say enough good things about how pleased we were with our whole stay. Here are the details:

The room – It was big, clean, fresh, and wonderfully charming. Our king-sized bed was honestly the most comfortable bed we have EVER experienced. Ever. We even asked where we could buy such as posh bed for ourselves, but the mattresses came from England and were a special gift to the inn keepers. Nevertheless, we sure did enjoy it while we were there! We also enjoyed big, plush spa towels delivered to our room each day. Truly, it was the small details, such as a pitcher of fresh water by the bedside, which made our room feel so special.

The home – It was simply gorgeous with a large, comfy sitting room and fireplace; a very spacious library; and a dining room. We spent many of our evenings in the library enjoying a glass of complimentary wine and browsing the hundreds of books. Kelly and Jeff have an extensive collection of books that focus on Georgia and the coastal region. If there’s anything you wanted to know about the land, the locals, or Georgia history it was found in that library.

The food – Each morning we were greeted with a cup of delicious, freshly-brewed coffee and a full breakfast. Some days we were served mini egg soufflé and Canadian ham, and some days were had flaky waffles hot off the grill. Best of all, every day our breakfasts were served with a cup of fresh fruit. If we wanted an afternoon or evening snack there was always coffee cake and tea available for guests.

Concierge services – Although Kelly and Jeff don’t advertise this, they have one of the best concierge services around! We arrived in Darien not knowing exacting what we wanted to do or where we wanted to go; we just wanted to enjoy the weather and history of the place. Kelly and Jeff arranged for us to take a private tour to Sapelo Island, guided us to the trolleys in Savannah, and provided us with binoculars to view the incredible wildlife.

The price – We stayed in the Garden Room for $125 per night, which has a king bed and its own private entrance. This was an incredible price for the value we received; we had a super comfortable room, a delicious breakfast each day, a library to relax in when we didn’t want to venture out, and hosts that guided us to some spectacular local spots.

Open Gates is a beautiful old home in the center of Darien, which is a lovely small town between Savannah & St Simons Island. We called at the last minute, and they accommodated us graciously, even though it was Thanksgiving week and they weren't expecting us. Our downstairs room was comfortable and large. It had doors onto both the library and the dining room, so I'm not sure if you would hear people in those rooms, since we were the only guests. Breakfast was excellent! We only met Jeff, but he was delightful and informative. In our short stay, we also watched the shrimp boats unload, ate a great shrimp dinner at Skippers Fish Camp, and met the owner of a cute wine shop.

Kelly and Jeff are wonderful and helpful hosts. As wildlife enthusiasts and photographers, we enjoy the area for our hobby. Harris Neck National Refuge is only a 30 minute drive for great nesting birds in the spring and beautiful marsh scenes. Many water scenes and historical sites in the area.

Beautiful B&B south of Savannah, Georgia. Our room was very well appointed, good breakfasts, access to the entire house with an excellent library, cable TV, and wireless internet! Our hosts are both wildlife biologists and were able to give us good advice and information about visiting wildlife preserves and the Okefenokee Swamp. Highly recommended.
