Darien Outlet Center

Owner description: Darien Outlet Center is a conveniently located open-air shopping center featuring merchants such as Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Store, Gap Outlet, Coach Factory and Tommy Hilfiger, along with unique and eclectic shops, boutiques and thrifts stores. The streets are cobble stone, the flower baskets bloom bright and often the flags flutter in the coastal breezes. The savings are tremendous, and the shopping adventure is real. Easy access off Interstate 95 at exit 49, mid-way between Savannah and Jacksonville, within two miles of historic downtown Darien, "where Georgia began." Latest addition - James Allen, Southern Picker Antiques Outlet.

A sprawling expanse of empty space that, at one time (or so I'm told) held a decent outlet mall. Now, only a handful of stores (coach, gap, beals, carters, a couple of thrift stores, and a kitchen shop, polo, hilfiger) remain. A couple of other storefronts are occupied by the visitors center, the local rotary chapter, and the local y. Basically this place was dead, and the eerie muzak playing in the background only added to the sense that, as you walked, a zombie might spring out from the landscaping and start snacking. No longer has a food court, but does house some vending machines and there are restaurants (Ruby Tuesday, Wendy's, and Burger King) bordering the area. A hint that something was awry occurred to me when I saw that the web site listed on Google for this mall was no longer online. Not worth the visit.

The outlet mall stores have the same prices as anywhere else but there are not many stores here or much of a selection. However, the item that really caught our attention was that the gas stations at this exit are gouging the I-95 travelers. The gas 20 miles further north on I-95 is 20 cents cheaper a gallon and if you can go south another 22 miles to exit 27 off of I-95 it is 30 cents cheaper per gallon. A few cents is one thing but this is much more than that and it is unacceptable. We will plan our future and often trips to Florida more carefully now and pass this exit by entirely instead of stopping. If you do not have an outlet store in your area these will do and they have some good deals but do not buy gas here.

THe Preferred Outlets at Darien (GA) sits on Interstate 95 at exit 49, very easy on-off situation. The standard outlet stores of Polo, Gap, Coach, Tommy Hilfiger, Liz Claiborne are available and well stocked, but the fascination is with the small, locally-owned shops like Crossroads and The Attic and the coffee shop - Java Joe's Bistro. Crossroads has the most gorgeous jewelry and handbags at very reasonable prices. Well worth spending some time in Crossroads. I found an awesome flower pot for my patio and table for my granddaughter's first house at "thrift store" prices in The Attic. Fun place to shop, staffed by volunteers, proceeds benefiting Morningstar Treatment facilities. And, let me recommend Java Joe's for a great coffee drink or soup and salad. Operated by Maribel and a staff of college girls, the atmosphere is friendly and open. Free WiFi and patio seating make it a place to leave your husband (if you have to shop with him) while you venture through the stores. Don't forget the recent addition of Carter's outlet along with Bath & Body Shop and Book Warehouse. Definently worth the time to stop and shop or spend an afternoon if staying in Darien.
