Owners Bill and Jan Chamberlain are a joy to get to know, and both have culinary talents which produced a variety of muffins, waffles, eggs Mackintosh and and an incredible shrimp omelette which brightened our every morning. They were super-helpful, providing us with a suggested itinerary and making tour and dinner reservations as well as helpful information about the area. The rooms are comfortable and well-appointed and all have gorgeous views of marsh, coastal waterways and a variety of birds such as herons, wood storks, egrets and hummingbirds. We can't wait to return next Spring!
Of all the B&B's on the east coast we've visited(Vermont to Florida), The Blue Heron Inn in Darien GA is definitely the best.

I've now stayed at the Blue Heron Inn on two separate occasions and it was wonderful both times. This B&B is located on a marshy estuary where you can enjoy bird watching, the sun set and rise from the comforts of your room's balcony or the large screened porch in the common area. The atmosphere is very laid back and quiet, and the rooms are spacious and clean. The owners Bill and Jane are sure to offer you a glass of wine upon your arrival. And, a very yummy home cooked breakfast is included in the price. Breakfast is served in enough time to catch the 8:30 am ferry (located right down the road) to Sapelo Island. I would recommend staying here for anyone who loves nature and the outdoors (there are kayaks on the property to use at your leisure).

The Blue Heron Inn was just what my husband and I needed as an "end of the summer getaway" before I returned to school as a teacher! The rooms were colorful with gorgeous views of the Marsh from your personal balcony. The Chamberlains were gracious hosts and prepared full breakfasts that were delicious, different and beautifully presented. They gave helpful tips for tours, shopping, dining and fishing in the area. The homemade cookies and wine and cheese in the afternoon were a very nice touch. We enjoyed the quiet and relaxing atmosphere from the moment we arrived and hope to visit again real soon!

I made the reservation on the strength of these reviews and must say that I was disappointed. First, the positives: the location (particularly the view of the marsh) was nice and the breakfast tasted great. Overall the room was fine though the bathroom was very small.

The most disappointing part of the experience was having to ask the inkeepers to tend to our room - upon our 7pm return we were surprised to find that nobody had replaced the towels or sheets, the garbage cans were unemptied, and the water in the room pitcher (the tap water tastes and smells like sulfur) hadn't been replaced. It was the type of situation that could have been offset by an apology. Instead, we were told how busy they were and that we could have found extra towels ourselves in a hallway bureau. They did immediately give us new towels and water (though they did not change the sheets). Judging from our experience, guests would do well to make very clear that they would like clean sheets, towels, etc. during their stay.

Travelers should also know that there are no locks on the room doors. The B&B is in an isolated location but it still seems best not to leave valuables in the room.

I am so very sorry, we obviously let you down and did not meet your expectations. We have two rooms with small baths and our policy is to check those rooms every day to see if fresh towels are needed, empty the trash and refil water pitchers as needed. We dropped the ball and I am mortified I did not extend my appolgies on the spot!
Despite a water softener and filters our well water here on the edge of the marsh has a sulfur smell. We have bottled water available at all times.
We try our best to reduce our impact on the sensitive eco environment of the marsh and estuary system we are fortunate to be a part of. Therefore, we change towels every two days and offer to change bed linens after every fourth night unless otherwise requested. Our doors lock from the inside but at this time do not have an outside the room locking mechanism. Though this has never been a problem we understand the concern and are looking in to this matter.

The Blue Heron Inn is a true hideaway. We had a two night stay and were absolutely charmed by the location and our wonderful hosts Bill and Jan. The setting is directly off the marsh with great views form our balcony. We stayed in the Blue Heron Room which was HUGE! There are plenty of birds to watch and the peace and quiet was perfect. Breakfast was wonderful with the first one being lime french toast and the second morning having shrimp omelets.

Bill and Jan were the BEST hosts that we have ever had in all of our B & B experiences. They booked our trip over to Sapelo Island for us including a tour of the island with George. George was born on Sapelo and has lived their his whole life. What a tour! I do not believe that there is anything that our hosts weren't prepared for. They even came through with a cooler for us to take to the island when we found that we had left ours at home.

Being located just around the corner from the ferry to Salpelo and less than 30 minutes away from St Simons and Jekyll Islands, Darien was the perfect location without all of the "touristy stuff." We will certainly be visiting the Blue Heron Inn again and again and by the way, ask Jan about her award winning KEY LIME ice cream.

My husband I recently spent a long week-end at the Blue Heron, on the recommendation of a friend. Great advice! Bill and Jan, the owners, are friendly and welcoming, and went out of their way to make each guest feel at home. We happened to arrive on a Friday evening just as they were preparing a low-country boil for friends, and they invited all the guests to join them. Great food, great company and lots of laughter. There are four rooms, all have private baths, and each room has a balcony overlooking the marsh. We stayed in the smallest room - the Savannah Room - which was pleasant, clean, and comfortable. The rooms are all different - and I wouldn't have been unhappy with any of the accommodations. Breakfast could contribute to a snugger waistband if you stick around for a few days - lime French toast, sweet potato pancakes, and shrimp omelets were served during our stay. Breakfasts were also accompanied by coffee, tea, juice and fresh fruit. Fortunately, there were lots of activities for burning off those calories! Wine is available in the evening.

Jan and Bill are more than happy to tell you about local activities, and will assist with any necessary reservations. We weren't able to do the Sapelo trip during our stay, but the guests who went gave it a good recommendation. The Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge is good for walking, biking and birding. Birders shouldn't forget the marsh (from their balcony, the screened-in back porch, or the deck) behind the inn. We spent one morning kayaking with Danny from Altamaha Outpost on the local river system, and saw many birds, an interesting variety of native plants, and at least a half dozen alligators. We definitely plan to return with our own kayaks in the future, and would also recommend Danny as a guide..

We had very good dinners at Sapelo Station and Skippers. On Saturday at lunch, we stopped by the Elm Grove Church (near the Inn), for barbecue - they serve chicken, ribs, and several vegetable choices.

The Blue Heron is a great place to head for a relaxing get away, and we hope to return.
