“More food from more places than you can imagine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2013

If you want to see an array of fresh and prepared foods from all over the world, the DeKalb Farmer's Market is the place to go. It has an amazing selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition, they provide an eating area and have a bakery/kitchen that makes fresh-prepared baked goods, pasta and other items. The seafood section has the freshest fish in the area. It is fun just to walk through the market, but even better to buy something to eat or cook.

“Worth the Drive!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2013

We drive there from Marietta ... so worth it... the only place to get your bulk teas, spices, coconut oil, beans, legumes .... The Dekalb Farmers Market changed the way we shop! Once a month plan what you need & freeze fish, meats, muffins, pasta sauce... I get their prepared meals to take to friends that are not well on occasion. This is the BEST place to get a birthday cake! Pretty high up there on people watching and a great place to take out of town visitors if they're foodies! If you have not been, GO!

“Not a traditional farmers' market, but a great place.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2013

I've been going there since soon after they opened in this location, and while their prices have gone up, so too has the selection. Go there for fresh fruits and vegetables from around the world, fresh seafood, a great selection of meats and cheeses, even an excellent wine offering. I'm told the restaurant/cafeteria has very good food reasonably priced, but the air temperature in the market is always too cold to make me want to relax (take something warm to wear, even in July). Their juices are fresh squeezed (probably from fruit that is fully ripe), but I find it a bit on the high price side. Rice, seasonings, bakery items, flowers- all worth the trip. It can get very crowded, especially on the weekends or near a holiday (as in getting a shopping cart from point A to point B can be an adventure).
While they do have packaged foods, that is not their strong suit- but then it's a farmers' market, right? The employees come from all over the world, and not all of them speak English, but they all seem to have a positive attitude.
Oh, and once you've got your cart loaded and ready to go, the checkout area looks like pandemonium (but actually runs quite efficiently). Warning: no credit cards accepted, and check usage needs to be pre-authorized at the service counter and established in the system.
It takes an effort to shop here, but if you're looking for something special or a bit of local adventure, give it a try.

“A great place to visit, buy exotic foods, and people watch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2013

The DeKalb Farmer’s Market is on E. Ponce de Leon Avenue a little over a mile from downtown Decatur. It started out over 40 years ago in an abandoned roller rink. Today the market is one of the largest markets in the country with 140,000 sq. ft. of floor space, all devoted to food items. It does not have utensils, light bulbs, detergents, etc.. It serves 100,000+ people a week. What gives the market its special flavor is the people, both workers and shoppers. It is an international crossroads because the market has not only the items found in your average supermarket, but those of cuisines from around the world. The flags of the world hang from the ceiling. Women in saris and other national dress mingle with those in tank tops and shorts (I have seen women in fur coats there as well). You can buy live fish and have them prepared as you watch. It has its own bakery that produces a wide variety of breads, rolls, pastries, and a very large wines of the world section. Do you need a special hard to find cheese or spice—most likely the market will have it. If the market does not carry it, chances are that you will not find it anyplace in Atlanta, even at stores that specializes in a particular cuisine. For foodies or people watchers, it is a place to visit for an hour or two if close by. For residents, it is the only place to get high quality fresh meat, fish, produce and other products at amazingly reasonable prices. Bring cash or a debit card if you plan to buy. They do not take checks or credit cards.
NOTE: I live close by and shop here regularly
