Reviewed 23 February 2014

Using hotels regularly and knowing standard expected I found this hotel to be a very tired looking property. Decorations were old and dated and musty. Although trying to keep up with 21st century like WiFi not just making it. Most staff very pleasant and helpful but not all and attempted to charge for a class of room that we did not have and that was under refurbishment at the time. Would not stay here again.

Hello and thank you for your review.

I am sorry that the room you requested wasn't available due to refurbishment, however, we have a range of rooms from small and modern to large and traditional. If you would prefer to view another room please feel free to ask at reception as they are quite different and it depends on personal taste. You will see from our feedback that many people think the hotel décor is very fitting to the period of the house, however, we cannot cater to every taste.

We do hope to see you again.

Regards

Thank you for your kind review.

I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and consider us good value for money. We have recently refurbished a few more bedrooms in the extension wing to the main house. If you visit again please ask to view them! We do try to maintain the property as much as possible and have just re-done the Restaurant which is now more neutral and feminine - we love it!

Hope to see you again soon!

Fiona

Having come up all the way from leicester to visit friends and family me and my husband stayed in this gorgeous hotel for 2 nights. On arrival the receptionist was very friendly and helpful and told us all we needed to know. The room was pleasant with tea/coffee making facilities and a small but useable tv. Very clean but lacked hairdryer and essential toiletries. We ate in the bar area the first night and the food was absolutely delicious!! And very good value for money. And the breakfast was very good too with a decent size cooked breakfast. All in all a very pleasant stay and i would advice anyone to stay here. Thanks to all staff at Durker Roods you were all very pleasant and helpful and we'll certainly come again.

Had an afternoon tea bought as a gift, so went with a member of my family.

Overall we very much enjoyed the experience, lovely sandwiches with a choice of ham, tuna and cucumber, my only comment would be the presentation, they were cut into small squares and piled on top of one another, small triangles laid out in a line of all 3 choices would have been much more suitable, just felt as though they had been made in a hurry, cut up quickly and thrown on the plate. The cakes were I am told very nice, but I did not partake of them as I could not get a straight answer as to any of them containing coconut, to which I am allergic, my family member was convinced that one of the cakes did contain coconut, but the waitress could not confirm this. The scones were lovely.
A nice touch would have been to have served tea in a china tea pot with china tea cups, this is how tea should be served, not the awful stainless steel one we received and thick cups.

Despite the few minus points, I think it is still worth the money charged, I have had afternoon tea in quite a few venues, most of which were a lot more money and some nowhere near as good.

Come on Durker Roods, serve the afternoon tea as it should.------PLEASE!!

Hello and thank you for your comments, they are much appreciated.

You will be pleased to know that we have now changed the way our Afternoon Tea is served and we now do it as a vintage afternoon tea using vintage china tea cups etc! We are also changing the cut of the sandwiches and presentation as well as the cake selection as we have listened to our customers and want to improve. Please come again and see the difference!

Many thanks,
Fiona

Stayed here on business. Dated interior and furnishings really need updating. In the evening the staff were split between the bar and the reception which meant waiting ages for a drink (perhaps not their fault, just understaffed). They've got wifi which is just about usable but a colleague of mine who was also staying overnight had the room with the router right over the door and couldn't get a wifi signal? From what I remember the food was alright, better than the standard of the rooms. I'm pretty sure you can get better rooms, service etc for the same price elsewhere.

Thank you for your review. I am sorry that the hotel décor was not to your taste, however, it is a 19th Century building and we try to keep the historic original features as we appreciate their era.

We do have more modern, standard hotel bedrooms in the extension which may be more to your taste and have recently again refurbished some on that wing.

If you have any problems during your stay please bring them to the attention of the Duty Manager who will endeavour to help as much as possible.

Fiona

We stayed on new years eve. I read other reviews before our stay and was dreading it. What a fantastic place. We were greeted with a warm welcome!!! It was very busy, so unfortunately we could only get a standard room. The tv wasn't fantastic, but so what. We didn't go to watch tv. It was a pleasure to stay in such an amazing place. Brilliant staff. We're going to book for an event night. Would like a different room tho, as were in the eves literally, and had no view as it was a skylight. Breakfast was fab and the lady serving I wanted to take home. Thanks and see you soon(I hope).

I have seen reviews that state this building is stunning....Correct

I have seen reviews that state the staff are pleasant...more than correct

I have seen reviews that state the rooms are dated...so-so, rooms are not unpleasant, however, a 15inch tv isn't adequate, the lighting isn't brilliant...however clean none the less.

food.... I had the burger, very very nice, prices are brilliant..the coleslaw...disgusting. really no point it being on the plate. however the burger and fries that nice u don't feel that bad chucking the slaw on the floor..(joke)

on the whole I would say for the price certainly punching above its weight, however I haven't had brekkie yet so my next review might completely change this.... but like I said, More good than bad, I would stay here again!!

Thank you for your review. We get a lot of praise about the quality of food and the value too is indeed exceptional! It's all home-made and fresh, so it is well received.
We have just refurbished a few more of the bedrooms, which is an ongoing process and I'm sure you can appreciate with offering such good value in the hotel, it is difficult to offer 5* accommodation as much as we would like to!
Thank you again for your comments and I hope to see you again,

Fiona
