Description: Ntounias restaurant is a traditional Cretan restaurant with authentic tastes cooked in the wood oven, even the bread is hand made and cooked in the restaurant. Most ingredients are taken from the family farm and many are harvested from the neighboring area. Stelios is a unique person with love for life and cooking, and this spirit you can see, smell and taste in his food! When you visit Ntounias, take your time as we will produce to you to taste our plates, which are different every day. The restaurant is located at Drakona village, east of Therisso village at Keramia, Chania prefecture in west Crete.

Stelios is a fantastic host and really makes you feel at home. The slow cooking is amazing (and a different to all of the other Greek "traditional" tavernas you will visit in Crete) - pottering around the kitchen choosing plates from delicious bubbling pots and pans is great fun. The view is magnificent and the shaded terrace always has a breeze. Go now before this becomes a well known secret!!

I can only say that everything recent reviewers have said is true. We travelled through stunning countryside to find this place, and despite my dislike of heights and windy roads, it was worth it! The road we approached from was more hair raising, the way we returned to Chania down the Theriso Gorge was much better and we stopped at several points to take photographs.

We were welcomed and invited into the kitchen to see what was cooking. There was a very good variety, and we were offered the chance to try multiple dishes, this seems to be the preference of those eating here. We didn't see a menu as such. It would be a shame to miss tasting this food so we had six plates of food of Stelios's choice brought out to us to share. If you did have a particular preference then you can of course state that.

I'm vegetarian and there were several dishes for me to choose from. Others had lamb and goat along with sampling my vegetable selections.

Everything tasted fresh and intensely flavoured. The wine we had tasted rather like a dry sherry, wouldn't like to say what percentage alcohol it was, but it was very good with the food!

Stelios greeted us by saying not to expect good service, we thought the service was very good. We were made very welcome, he bought out something (not sure what) which was burning to persuade the wasps from sharing our meal. He posed for photographs with the cooking pots outdoors, his idea! He cooks with love, what is seasonal and home grown, so I would highly recommend a visit.

Oh, and the value for money? 41.50 euro for four adults to eat their fill, with wine and a complementary berry and yoghurt dish, I think that is very good value!

First off, Dounias is not a restaurant. It is a family Taverna that uses only ingredients raised on the property. This includes all meat, dairy, and vegetables. Even the wine is made on site. The owner, Stelios, and his wife, prepare the food in ceramic pots over a wood fire in the traditional Cretan style of slow cooking. If you are not fluent in Greek, you are brought into the kitchen to see the food and choose what you want. The hospitality and atmosphere is indescribable.
Now the food. The Cretan "slow food" is simply delicious. From the homemade bread to the zucchini ratatouille to the slow cooked lamb, all were amazing. The highlight were the stuffed zucchini flowers that was perhaps the best dish we tried during our trip.
To top it off the drive to get there and the view from the property were also fantastic. 5 stars without a doubt!
I just hope it does not get too crowded because of the TA reviews!

One of the best places I have EVER eaten. Simply amazing. Great food, great view over the mountains and great atmosphere, but don't expect service. The owner, Stelios, doesn't want you to expect good service although he and his family are very lovely and friendly. This is not a restaurant Stelios sais. It's a farm and Stelios produces meat, wine and vegetables himself and the food is just unforgettable.

Unforgettable experience with personalised service like no other. We've never had a meal that was prepared with such passion. Ask him for a taster platter and you will not be disappointed - homemade bread made with 3 types of flour, mountain goat, pork, stuffed courgette flowers, greek style potato with cheese, divine veg, yog with local berries.

Panoramic views, beautiful at sunset... so much so that my boyfriend proposed!

Cheapest meal in two weeks - 7 dishes and wines/beers cost 26 euros - unbelievable, worth more than double.
