“Plan to return”
Reviewed 11 January 2015 for a stay in December 2014

My boyfriend and I were looking for a specific feel for our stay in Italy, a filler spot for the end of our two week European vacation. When we found this property we were so excited and immediately fell in love with the photos, and once we arrived we were not disappointed. The beauty of the home, which has been lovingly restored and beautifully decorated, was captivating.
When we arrived it was late and had been snowing. We were greeted by the smiling Italian owner, who gladly shoveled snow for us to have a place to park. His warm welcome was so sincere. He was always available to help guide us and check in on us without being pushy or intrusive.
We spent as much time as we could enjoying the views from Casa Terra and cooking in the amazing kitchen, with a roaring fire made from local chestnut wood. The surrounding area is worth exploring. We made our way to Garfagnana, Lucca, Pisa, and Florence, all within a short drive.
We soon realized we didn't schedule enough time to truly experience all the property and area has to offer. We are already planning a return trip with the kids in the springtime to relax, enjoy the garden and explore more that Tuscany has to offer.
The owners are passionate about what they do, and it shows in the property and the manner in which they manage it. They stole a piece of my heart, which remains with them always in Boveglio.

“Mountain village with quirky clock”

Lisa and Luca are lovely hosts for this late 1700s property, that they have lovingly restored. There are 4 vacation rental units altogether (casa terra, a 4 bdrm home being the one we stayed in) in this large stone building.

Amenities in casa terra: kitchen with stove, oven and fridge/freezer, all full sized. Dishes, pots, coffee makers (Italian and a drip)l No toaster or microwave, which suited us fine. Large fireplace in the kitchen to warm up the place. There is one comfy chair near the hearth, a second comfy chair would have been ideal for cozying up to the fire (there are plenty of chairs, antiques mostly, so not so easy on the butt). Main Bathroom has shower, toilet, bidet, sink and washing machine. Some (2 bath size for 2 people) towels provided, but if you wash them during your stay, you need to hang dry, so keep that in mind, as it may take a couple days for them to dry thoroughly. 2nd bath is an ensuite, 2 piece.

Bedrooms - we only needed one, it had access to the deck, a lovely spot to sit with a glass of wine late in the afternoon. Table and 2 chairs wide. Bed was 2 singles pushed together, the mattresses were a bit too soft and so so in the comfort factor. A choice of pillows (down, medium) would be lovely, as the pancakes that were there weren't suitable for all sleepers. Mid September and the mountain air is chilly at night, but the boiler hasn't been turned on (therefore no radiating heat) yet...have to rely on the fireplace at the other end of the house, wear flannels or snuggle up to your loved one!

There is also a living and dining room in the house and access to the gardens and sun patio.
Connectivity: wifi was a bit spotty, did kick out frequently, requiring some patience. 2 tvs (never used them) and no phone (a good thing!).
Tips: some basics provided, Bevoglio is a village with NO facilities. Buy your groceries in Collodi or Bagni di Lucca. The bread man comes to the village 6 days a week around noon.

Getting here: from the south (Pisa, Florence, etc), once into Collodi (named after Pinocchio's author), it's 14 kms up a winding road, where large trucks travel the first 8 kms or so to operational paper mills. Beware! The road has a few spots of narrowness between you and oncoming cars. From the north, it's 11 kms from Bagni di Lucca, up an even more winding but somewhat wider road to the village of Bevaglio.

Oh, and the quirky clock? The bell tolls at :06 and again at :08 after the hour and at :34 for the half hour!

Management Response
21 May 2016
