We recently spent two weeks at the Alpine Crest. Before going there I was somewhat worried by the number of bad reviews. In spite of a few negatives we ended up having a nice time there. I'll try to go through the good and bad as objectively as possible so that you can decide whether this place is for you.

Good:
Nice views from the side of a hilltop. You feel as if you could be somewhere in the Alps.
-Fireplace. Gives a nice cosy cabin-like feel. We bought a box of dura-flame logs and had a fire every evening.
-Nice location above the town. It feels like a semi-secluded spot, yet still close enough to walk to town.
-Full kitchen. We really appreciated being able to make our own meals.
-Clubhouse. They have a pool table and large flat-screen TV. We went there a few times to play pool which was fun. The flat panel might be fun for a movie night if it's not in use.
-Pool & Jacuzzi. Since it was January we mostly had the pool to ourselves which was nice. The pool was well heated, and the Jacuzzi was very well heated. but the room the pool is in is a covered area not well insulated from the outside, so the air can be a bit chilly in winter.

Some aspects of the property have a curious retro feel. In the main office they have a library of VHS tapes that you can borrow free of charge. Yes, VHS tapes! And the units all have a combo DVD/VHS player.

Internet access: WifFi is available only in the clubhouse and the main office. Bring your own mobile internet if you need to stay connected continuously.

Bad:

There are some significant areas of Alpine Crest that need improvement. Please consider the good and the bad together when deciding whether to stay here.

Some people have complained about the place needing updating. This is true, but
It really depends on the unit you get. Some units appear to be fully renovated, others are in the process of being renovated. We managed to view one of the units in the building on your left as you come up the hill. The unit we saw in that building appeared to be completely renovated with new fridge, new carpet and flat-panel TV. The unit we had (in Edelweiss) had recent (maybe one year old) carpet, new tile in the bathroom, new microwave and fairly new dishwasher. However the fridge and washer/dryer combo looked like they had not been replaced since the place was built (in 1983)!

It would nice if they could sound-proof the place a bit better. We could hear kids running to and fro in the unit upstairs in the evening up until 10pm when they put the kids to bed. From what I've read, a lot of the people who come here are families, so that's to be expected, but we came for a quiet vacation. Fortunately the second week we spent there was very quiet.

We had one major problem during our stay:

We had to switch units because of renovations in the unit right next to ours. All of a sudden, on a Sunday morning, there was all kinds of banging going on due to new tile being laid. Okay, I understand they were taking advantage of the fact that the place was 3/4 empty the first week of January. But.... In you'd expect to be informed of this well in advance and they should offer to switch you to another unit. It took up half a day to re-pack our things and move to another unit. In spite of the huge inconvenience no compensation was offered, eg. a free dinner certificate, a free night to use in the future, or any kind of token offer whatsoever. We didn't even get much in the way of an apology. We decided not to let this ruin our stay, but still it could have been handled much better.

As other reviewers have pointed out, this is definitely not a four or five star and maybe not even a three-star resort where everything is perfect. If that's what you are looking for you would be better off reconsidering as you will simply end up being disappointed and not enjoying your stay. If you are the kind of person who can overlook a few negatives (such as the ones I mentioned) and see the good in a place then you may end up enjoying yourself here.

We went here for a romantic and relaxing holiday and, in spite the negative points I mentioned, still ended up having a nice time.

You can see a few images of the resort on their website. Their description naturally puts the place in the best light. The photos appear to show the fully renovated units.

Their website is hard to find! For the record, it's: www dot AlpineCrestResortHelen dot com.

When I checked in, the couple running the place looked nice and helpful and thought this will be fine. Got to the room which was large with a kitchen and 2 bed/bath and saw red towels. Now who uses red towels for rentals??! You can't tell if they are clean. The sheets and pillows were stained. I did not want to sit on the furniture nor walk on the nasty carpet. As previously noted by others, the place really needs spruced up. The kitchen was a nice size and the unit was plenty big along with two decent size bathrooms. As far as staying there again, let's just say and big NO! The indoor pool was nothing that I wanted to swim in and having folks tubing all over the area..it did not give you much time to relax hearing kids yelling and playing. Not the owners fault, but I kinda like to enjoy a bit of privacy and relax. If I wanted a bunch of noise, I would have stayed in town.

It was adequate at best. The mattress was terrible and the heat did not work. When it is in the upper 30's at night, a little heat would be nice. The units are outdated and show their wear. The location was great though. But, the indoor pool was constantly occupied by locals and not really a place I wanted to spend much time.

The resort itself needs some paint and new carpets but the rental had a great layout and wonderful views. It was close to several beautiful parks and waterfalls, walking distance (though a steep trail) to downtown Helen, and the waterslide is also a river tubing stop off. The area is great for nature-lovers, fishing and those that appreciate German-style kitsch!

We loved Octoberfest which started the week we were in Helen. This was trip #5 for my husband and I. We had previously stayed at the Helendorf Inn with our 2 sons. This was our 1st experience with Alpine Crest Resort. It was comparable to the Helendorf as far as furnishings and cleanliness. We enjoyed our stay so much that we are booked there again for this September 2010 Octoberfest. Once again, we will be bringing friends and are looking forward to our stay. Hopefully it will not be RAINING this year. Due to the inclement weather we could not enjoy any of the outdoor ammenities but the bedrooms and living/dining areas were so nice. The kitchen provided the "at home" necessities for cooking and dining in. Our guys watched football while we girls shopped the stores in the rain. Parking underneath your unit was so nice. It over compensated for the stairs we had to climb to get to the unit. We were in the DRY!

Of note... we are owners of a timeshare in Panama City, FL. and with Wyndham Resorts. This was an exchange through RCI. We were very pleased with everything.

Thank you to your staff for a wonderful time had by all.
