Attended the July 4th fireworks. A lot of the merchants we unsure on the best place to view the fireworks. After finding a good place to view the pretty good fireworks display it went down hill from there. Seeing as to how they hold the event EVERY YEAR, you would think they would have plans in place to deal with the traffic. The police were no where to be found until an hour after the fireworks were over. By then main street had turned into a parking lot. We waited two hours before attempting to leave. After speaking with a merchant, I was informed the traffic issues happen every year. You would think with all the experience with Oktoberfest, the city would have plenty of plans in place to deal with crowd and traffic control. But I guess not. This was my first and last visit for July fourth. Too many people for this town to be as disorganized as it is.

We went there for directions to Tallulah Falls. They have maps and tons of brochures for any location you can think of to visit.

Helen is a cute little Bavarian style town with some fun stuff to do, but after youve intertubed the Chattahoochee and danced to polka music, explore the surrounding area. The Helen visitor center is very helpful with information on where you can go. Northeast Georgia is beautiful country. There is a wonderful loop drive that starts by heading south out of Helen and turning on 115 by the indian mound. The little community of Sautee-Nacoochee is about 5 miles east of Helen at the intersection of 115 and 255. Several shops and a great community art center with a first class folk pottery museum are there. Continue down 255 for about 7 miles to Batesville and turn right on 197. In 2 miles you'll come to Mark of the Potter; a wonderful pottery shop housed in an old grist mill on the Soque river. Along with lots of beautiful handmade pottery, there are huge trout you can feed from the deck overlooking the river and falls. Then head back up 197 through Batesville again. Continue north 2 more miles and you'll arrive at Hickory Flat pottery, another great pottery shop in a 100+ year old house. Then you can return to Helen by way of 356 and stop at Unicoi state park if there's still time left in the day.

I understand some concern that this is a tourist trap, but have you been to Gatlinburg TN?......that's a trap. We really enjoyed the area and walking around. Most shops had their own individual flare, not that commercialized stuff. The people in the shops were very friendly and talkative. Helen has many fine quality places to dine. Seems to be something for everyone.
