“Sans Souci Cottage a Delight!”
Reviewed 3 April 2012

Mid-March is a lovely time to visit the coast of Georgia: warm days, cool nights and no humidity. We had heard great reports of Jekyll Island Club Hotel. It consists of several properties in the center of the historic district. Millionaires from the Gilded Age built the original hotel and cottages. Many have been lovingly restored and several are used for accommodations and restaurants. Fortunately we were given a room with a balcony/porch that I requested. It was in the Sans Souci Cottage, formerly apartment building units. It featured a large room with a king size bed, four arm chairs, a fireplace, a Jacuzzi and a porch complete with two rocking chairs facing west and the setting sun. What to do? Here are some ‘must dos’: a museum depicts the island’s history and a 90-minute tram tour of the historic district includes entry to two renovated cottages. Walking and biking trails crisscross the island. There’s a pristine public beach on the Atlantic side. One night we had dinner in the Crane Cottage courtyard loggia. Very romantic. Spend a few days here and you won’t be disappointed!!

Room Tip: River view with a balcony/porch

We have been coming to the Jekyll Island Club Hotel for years. Each time, we find it to be elegant, friendly, relaxed and comfortable. We ask for a riverview room so we can see the sunset from our room and/or porch in the evenings over the river and marshes. Beautiful. For outdoors people, there is a lot to do. We golf, bike, run and swim in the ocean and gorgeous pool. There are tons of great biking/running trails. Our sons' favorite nature trail passes by a small pond where we are almost guaranteed to see an alligator. Our little sons love the mini-golf too. For the charm, the views and the amenities, the rates are remarkably low. Staff is great too. Very friendly and not at all snotty.

We've stayed at the hotel the last three years in mid- March. Never seen a drunk college student anywhere on Jekyll Island during our stays!!! It's such a great place to relax, ride bikes, walk on the beach, forget about winter, and enjoy the sunsets from the porch. The food and service in the Grand Dining Room are always outstanding. The hotel staff are so friendly and helpful. It's so nice to see the same people every year. We plan to visit each year and always hate to leave.

Room Tip: We always stay in a Traditional double/double room. We've stayed on the second floor on both si...

It will feel like you stepped back in time and went back to the Victorian Era. You will get a taste of what it might have felt to be a millionaire in the late 1880's. Beautiful architecture, quiet getaway. Try to catch the complimentary two hours historical tour with the concierge who will unveil the history of this amazing place and will show you different rooms and suites from the different buildings and annexes on the property.

That's how this place got started. Some of America's richest men made Jekyll their summer home (loose translation of history there). Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, Vanderbilts. So in order to fully appreciate your visit, it's good to keep in mind that parts of this place were built around 1900, even late 1800's. Yes, some of the hotel rooms are small; that's how the place was built back then. But it's the whole historical experience: from knowing the federal reserve bank was born here to the enormous oaks with limbs so long their knees rest on the ground, to the "cottages" of the mega-rich, to the croquet court on the front lawn, to affordable rooms and tasty seafood. It's a wonderful way to spend a few day. Disclaimer: I don't work for the Chamber of Commerce. I do live in Georgia. I hate gnats, love mama and grits, and azaleas only bloom in the spring (for those looking at the photos).

This lovely, charming resort makes you feel like you are taking a step back to the Gilded Age. If only the walls could talk! Filled with tons of history, this resort is beautifully located on a secluded island away from all the hustle and bustle of life. If you are looking for a quiet, stress free, intimate getaway, come to Jekyll Island. We traveled with our family - 2 daughters ages 12 and 15. Our girls enjoyed the resort but this place is perfect for celebrating a wedding, honeymoon or anniversary. Our room was in the San Souci Building and it was very clean and spacious.

Tips: Enjoy a stroll along the lovely grounds, rent bikes and explore the island, visit the beach and a MUST DO is take the Hotel Tour. We were delighted to be able to view the Presidential Suite which is the only room which gives you access to the turret which is located on the top floor of the resort. Hats off to our tour guide Sherri who was very informative and did a fantastic job describing the "Lady" in her day.

Went down to the island during Shrimp and Grits Festival. We drove our Thunderbird and was afraid to park it with all the cars during the festival. The hotel let us park in front of the hotel. It was our wedding anniversary and they had champagne and chocolate covered strawberries in room. They made our weekend one we will always remember.
