We stayed for two nights at this peaceful privately owned lodge. Upon our arrival we were greeted and warmly welcomed by the lodge's management and staff members. Although it rained very heavily during our visit, our bush guide, Kyle, came up with excellent alternatives. We had plenty of opportunity to view wildlife right at the lodge and on the guided trips. The wetland location is a spectacular area to spot a variety of birds.

The food, ambience and friendly service were all commendable. Especially noteworthy: the view from our cabin and the personal oversight of the property's owner.

Room Tip: All the rooms looked excellent.

Spent 4 relaxing days at Makakatana in Oct 2013. Chalet was clean and comfortable - no issues. was very private. Food was good, ambiance pleasant, staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. Owner showed keen interest in guests comfort and enjoyment. Some game around, saw Rhino, Buffalo, Giraffe, Hippos and crocs a plenty. Very interesting and informative boat trip on the lake with skipper Warwick. Lots to see in the area. Recommended for a restful stay.

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon and we had an absolutely wonderful time (even though we had a lot of rain). The staff was courteous and attentive, the food was excellent and the rooms were just splendid! We'd love to come back in a few years!

My husband and I traveled from Johannesburg to Makakatana Bay Lodge in October 2013. We were celebrating our second wedding anniversary. We found an excellent offer on the internet and decided to travel somewhere different than that of the usual Kruger bush experience. The service was excellent, our room was great, food was average. Overall we had a great experience.

The boat safari was a new experience! It was wonderful to see so many hippos. Unfortunately we did not get so lucky with crocodile sightings, they were particularly shy that day. The game drives were excellent!

We had a wonderful time at Makakatana Bay and have recommended your lodge to many of our friends looking for something different. A few weeks after our long weekend at Makakatana Bay we found out we were expecting our first child, the fertility doll works! Baby is due in June.

I am so pleased to hear about your pregnancy! I told you that the Lodge fertility doll has a reputation! I think there are many children with 'Makakatana' as their middle name for some reason!!!! Congratulations!

Makakatana Lodge was our first of 3 safari stops in the Kwa zulu natal area.
We had an absolutely wonderful stay. The setting of the lodge in the beautiful bush of St Lucia is absolutely amazing. You will feel very connected to nature and the peacefulness of the area. The St Lucia boat tour from their lodge is a must – since it is the only lodge located on the wetlands they have access to part of the water you would not from any other tour. We loved our boat guide Warwick and seeing the Hippos and Crocs was incredible. We did not encounter hippos like this anywhere else and we were even able to hear the hippos at night from our room. We really felt like we were out in the bush. Our guide for the bush drives was very friendly and informative. He went out of his way to meet specific requests. The food was very good, better than our other safari stays and the rooms were very quaint and isolated. I loved the outdoor shower! With only 6 rooms it’s a nice small group and there is opportunity to interact with others around the fire after dinner. The overall service was very attentive. The bush drives at other safari’s with the big 5 were a little more exciting but the experience at this place was well worth a stay. If we were doing it over again we would absolutely go back to Makakatana! Loved it!!
