Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa

Reviewed 4 April 2013

I spent 3 nights with my partner in Aghadoe Heights. The hotel is really warm and cosy and all the reviews about the breathtaking views are absolutely true!

We were upgraded to a junior suite on check-in which was a fantastic surprise. In the suite we had a seperate living room and dressing room which was great - the only downside of the room was the "view". We were right over the delivery area so pretty much just saw vans coming and going! The room was spotlessly clean though and the turn-down service in the evening was very welcome.

Eating at the hotel is a great experience. We had dinner in the restaurant, the bar food and breakfast and each was fantastic - great service, really good food and great atmosphere! The piano player in the bar each evening is an especially nice touch!

We didn't use the spa but did use the pool and gym each day - pool area is fantastic with great views of the lakes. The gym is small but has the main items you would generally look for in a hotel gym.

On evenings that we went into Killarney there was a free shuttle bus to bring you in which was great.

As with every hotel there are a couple of things that could be improved on. I would stress that these items are minor and didn't impact on my overall stay. I would also suspect also that if the hotel business in Ireland wasn't so poor at the moment they would have been addressed. Firstly there were was no tea/coffee facilities in the room which I would expect as standard. Also the menu's / guest information booklets etc were very dated and worn. Similarly the TV's are old and need to be replaced.

I plan to return to this hotel again and hopefully some of the small items above will be looked at over time!

Room Tip: Even room numbers are at the back of the hotel and don't have lake views.

Stopped off for lunch as I was passing through. Gorgeous hotel with lovely food and great views. Staff were really friendly and helpful too.

Next time I hope to come back and stay for the weekend so I can sample everything that this place has to offer.

Highly recommend.

I took my fiancee to this hotel as part of the whole engagement surprise as we got engaged just outside the hotel at the fantastic viewing point across the road. We were in a junior garden suite and it was fantastic. The room decor was modern and bed was very comfortable. We went to dinner in the main restaurant on the saturday night and the atmosphere was great. The piano player really set the seen and made our engagement day very special. The food was great and was one of the best meals we have ever had. The pool was very nice once we realized that you just walk from your room in your dressing grown instead of getting changed there. The views from the hotel and pool are also stunning. Very friendly staff.

All in all a great trip and a great time. Highly recommend this hotel!

I recently stayed at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel and was impressed by the warmth of my reception there and the excellent level of service that I received throughout my stay. Staff were warm, friendly and helpful and ensured that I enjoyed my stay. The hotel and staff create a warm, friendly and relaxing environment in beautiful surroundings. I would thoroughly recommend staying at the Aghadoe Heights or taking advantage of their great w/end getaway offers.

Room Tip: Chose a room at the front of the hotel as the views of the Killarney Lakes are amazing!

This is what 5 star service is all about. Exceptional staff, alert to all our requirements without being obtrusive. The subtle suggestions to our menu choices brought an added dimension to the already delicious fare. We received a complimentary upgrade to a Lake view room which was very spacious and comfortable and of course the view of the lakes brightened up an otherwise dark grey morning. The only disappointment I had was in the quality of the pillows, they felt tired and lifeless and didnt do much for someone with a bad neck. ...however they were the only feature of our visit that didn't hit the 5 star mark and we're already planning a return trip.

From the moment we arrived at Aghadoe to the moment we left, we couldn't have asked for better service or comfort from a hotel.

Check in was a pleasure, with a really friendly lady looking after us, and a concierge who showed us to our room and around the hotel.

Room was fabulous, with floor to ceiling glass wall looking out over the lakes, amazing!

Pool was great, with free fluffy robes and slippers in the room. However the thermal suites were a highlight, and we spent hours relaxing here at a special rate.

The bar was great, with live piano in the evening. Breakfast was also fab, served to the table in the Lake View room.

Small touches of a newsletter delivered to the room each evening, and bottles of water for the car journey on check out made the stay complete.

Overall fantastic stay with great service, and an amazing thermal suite and fabulous views.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view room

Billed as a five star hotel, this is a bit of stretch. It is a solid four star but little more than that. The hotel does not impress from the outside, but upon entering, it has a cosy, trendy, boutique feel to it. And the common areas are quite limited in size too.

I'm sure many of the rooms are fitted out in the same trendy fashion as the rest of the hotel, but the family rooms are very, very tired and don't seem to have been touched since the mid 80s. In fact it was very disappointing to transition into such rooms after the trendy decor of the rest of the building. This stark contrasting style, with odd, mismatched furniture, heavily used, scraped and marked, threadworn carpet with no bounce whatsoever, along with a CRT TV that was at least 20 years old (replete with burnt plastic casing) seriously disappoints and clarifies the view that this hotel is not particularly interested in families or children. (A point reinforced by the restaurant's policy banning children after 7.00pm.) When challenged about both, the staff seemed disinterested and basically take the stance of this is the way that it is and so what?

Another gripe is the shuttle service into Killarney. It's a one way service, forcing you to take a taxi back, even though the bus would be coming into town anyhow! The is no logic to this policy and obviously a scam to support local taxis.

The lounge bar and food is satisfactory, but over €16 for mediocre burger leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The health club is OK, but the pool area is less attractive than the photos suggest and is over chlorinated and has peeling paint all over the place. The changing rooms were unbelievable. I've been in toilet cubicles that were roomier!

On the upside the breakfast in the restaurant was outstanding. Excellent food, ambiance, and even better waiting staff.

Price wise, the hotel overall is reasonable, compared to other five star hotels, but as I've described above, that's understandable. You get what you pay for.
