My wife and I stayed at the Killeen House Hotel for seven unforgettable nights, ten days ago now.

We wanted a quality 'base' from, and around, which we could enjoy playing a range of different golf courses across County Kerry as well as enjoying all the beauty that County Kerry has to offer. This was our first trip to Ireland and our first `golfing' holiday ever.

Killarney seemed to be the `natural' location to stay... and, having decided that, we then turned to TripAdvisor to help us get a better feel for our Hotel / B&B options.

And, of course, we read the reviews about the Killeen House Hotel. And, frankly, we were `torn'... on the one hand, how could we NOT stay at an hotel with such rave reviews? On the other, surely, no place could live up to those reviews - there had to be an element of hype in there somewhere, surely?

We called the hotel and talked with Geraldine. The vibes were all great; the welcoming tone and warm attitude were there from the very beginning of the conversation. Maybe... just maybe, it wasn't all hype? We booked to stay seven nights and crossed our fingers.

O.K., here goes:

Staying with Geraldine, Michael, Charlie, Jessica, Janet, Margaritte, Paul and the rest of the team was one of the most fantastic and totally enjoyable experiences of our very, very, well-travelled lives.

The location: Perfect. We awoke in our really lovely suite [ ask for 305 ] to wonderful views across pastures toward the magnificent mountains beyond. In the evening, from a hillside about three hundred metres from the hotel, we watched the sunset creating the most fantastic effects across the Lake and the mountains. Beautiful.

The Property and the accommodation? Perfect. This is a much-loved `family country house' kind of property... not in any pretentious way... rather, in a warm, well cared for, truly welcoming, easing, relaxing, kind of way.

We stayed in 305, one of the Championship suites. It was simply great... bags of room, great big relaxing bed, [plus a spare]... tons of wardrobe space., etc., in short, everything you would wish for in a suite that immediately felt `ours'.

[ I say everything, but there was no `mini-bar' and no coffee-making machine... which was no hardship at all since freshly - fresh - brewed quality coffee was always `on the go' and brought to your room with a smile. ]

The Restaurant? Stunning. The quality of all the food at the Killeen House Hotel rivals the very best cuisine we've enjoyed anywhere in the world. I'm talking about great fresh ingredients, combined to deliver a wonderful choice of `classic' and `creative' recipes and menus, superbly cooked and presented, served in a wonderfully elegant yet relaxed dining room by really nice, pleasing, professional staff... I mean, please... what more do you want? The food is wonderful.

You can chose to mix your selections from two menus... one a pure, out and out, five star fine cuisine menu, the other, a mouth-wateringly great `pub grub' menu [ but we've never eaten 'pub grub' of this quality anywhere before!]. Basically, the chef is a genius and loves his job. Don't hesitate to `mix and match' from the menu options... the team will be only too pleased to serve you what you want, as you want it.

The breakfast... oh God... whether you want the Full Irish [ lovely, lovely cooking in full flow there ] or prefer lighter, fruitier, fare... it is all, I mean ALL, on offer for you.

The Pub? A small, relaxed, `pour your own Guinness' environment for hotel guests [ your new friends ] only. Picture your `perfect', ideal, pub? Here it is.

The people? Ah... therein lies the secret of the Killeen House Hotel!

Here are people who make you feel you are TRULY important to them... people who behave, in every way, as if they really want you to be their friends for life.

Not intrusive, not in your face, not in your space... but simply people for whom helping you get the most enjoyable experience possible out of your stay [not just in the hotel but also in Kerry and indeed Ireland] genuinely seems to be a personal `mission'. I'm talking about EVERY single member of the team or, better, `family' that you become a member of at the KH Hotel... not just one or two.

We met half a dozen people - again, new friends now - who were repeat visitors to the KH Hotel. One couple from the USA were there were travelling with their daughter and `new' son-in-law... sharing the KH experience that they had, eleven years previously, shared with their own parents... it would have been inconceivable for them to stay anywhere else in Kerry, or, they said, to think of visiting Ireland without staying at KH.

Now, Dominique and I know exactly how they feel.

We can't wait to go back.

Do yourself a favour? Fall in love with Killarney and with the folks at the Killeen House Hotel. You'll never regret it.

My partner and I travelled to Killarney for a wedding and chose Killeen House based on reviews on Tripadvisor. Even before we arrived, our email correspondence with Michael gave us a sense of the warm and helfpul welcome we would receive - and we were not disappointed! More than the rooms - which were large and comforable - we were impressed by the fact that everyone knew our names and remembered who we were and why we were visiting for the duration of our stay; we really were made to feel like family.

We were upgraded to a Championship room and so were spoiled for space; we miss having tea and coffee making facilities in the room for an early morning or pre-bed cuppa so if lookgin forsuggesitons on how to improve, that is what I would add.

We sadly missed out on eating a full meal in Rozzers restaurant - the menu looked amazing - but our bar meal on the Friday evening was very good.

The hotel is situated a short drive outside Killarney town so I would recommend that guests choosing to stay here do hire a car.

All in all an very good stay and I would not hesitate to recommend Killeen House.

Michael and Geraldine are very good at what they do. That's also true of Charlie, Janet, Jessica, Marguerite, and Theresa. ( I'm sorry if we left anyone out. Everyone was great.) It felt like family. We stayed for 12 days, using Killeen House as a base to visit the area and especially the many wonderful golf courses. We have never stayed in one place for such a long period and were a little worried that we'd get bored with returning to the same place everyday. Well, we didn't. The weather was terrible, even by Irish standards, but it was wonderful/terrifying to experience Ballybunion, Tralee, Waterville, etc. in such conditions. Michael and Geraldine are very helpful about tee times, information, and directions. And it was nice to return wet and tired and know that you were going to sit down to a good dinner. Yes, the food is good, with plenty of options. We don't eat much beef at home, but we certainly would if we could get the Kerry beef served at Killeen House. And then there's the seafood chowder. Whatever you order, you won't leave the dining room hungry. We were sorry to leave. Having played the sensational links courses of the Southwest, I would like to play the many courses in the Northwest. I know that Enniscrone, Rosapenna, etc. will be wonderful, but where would we stay? Golf in Ireland wouldn't be the same without Killeen House.

From our initial greeting by Janet to our fairwell departure with Geraldine and
Michael, we experienced a wonderful and relaxing stay at Killeen House.
The friendliness and helpfulness provided by the staff was a constant reminder
that we were staying in a very special place. There was nothing they were not
willing to help you with, from tee times to directions (there are way to many
roundabouts for us Americans ha-ha) to sightseeing recommendations.
Our room was large, bright and clean, including a nice size bathroom. The Pub
is a great place to relax after a great, or not so great, round of golf. We can't say
enough about the food. The quality, variety and presentation made for an
exceptional dining experience.

Michael and Geraldine and all the staff, thank you for a most memorable visit to
Killarney. We look forward to returning to Killeen House.

We just got back from two weeks traveling around the Republic. I picked all our hotels off of TripAdvisor and chose one the highest reviewed for each city in which we stayed. The Killeen House was, by far, the best stay of our experience. Geraldine and Michael, as well as Jessica and Charlie, made us feel at home from the moment we walked through the front door. They introduced themselves by first name and memorized our names immediately. After that, they spent the rest of the time bending over backwards to see that we had the most pleasant stay and that all our needs were met.

As I did not bring my clubs with me, we were the only non-golfing group at the hotel as it is in the middle of some of the most incredible golfing country in Ireland and a great base to play out of (The Killeen House's pub has golf balls and bag tags from all over the world lining the walls). This worked to our advantage as we spent the first afternoon with Charlie and Jessica watching the All-Ireland Hurling finals on TV while all the other guests were out on the links and they patiently explained the game to us. What an incredible sport! But I digress.

The room was large, nicely decorated and quiet. The restaurant was perfect. Elegant enough to dress up for but casual enough for golfers or sightseers to come in as they were to get a bite. The food was so good that we never bothered to go the 5 minutes into town to explore any other dining options. If your time was tight in the morning and you had no time for breakfast they happily got you a sandwich wrapped to go if you wished.

The location is perfect regardless of your the reason for your visit - unless you want to walk out the door and around downtown. They are located just out of town, maybe 5 minutes. However, it is a breeze to get in and out and you are very close to the courses or the main road to head any way that you need to. It was a great central location for us to visit Kenmare, the Ring of Kerry, Muckross House, Dingle, Slea Head, the National Park, and shop.

The bottom line is that the Killeen House will be at the top of my list I go to when I get back to Ireland in the future.

Thank you, Mike and Geraldine, for the greatest memories.
