“Old South Charmer”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 September 2012

In the l980s, we lived a few miles from this hotel and stayed there once for a romantic weekend. We ate many meals in the hotel's dining room. It was the place to go for working lunches and was equally as popular with the ladies who lunch. The hotel is now in the hands of new owners who are determined to bring this grand old lady back to her former glory and are in the midst of renovations. The hotel has themed rooms in its motor lodge building behind the hotel proper but we advise getting a room in the main building. The architecture is stately and it's a treat to wander up and down the halls peeking into the rooms as it is the custom of the hotel to leave the doors open if the room is not occupied. We looked forward to spending a night here recently on a trip through Georgia and were not disappointed. We had a comfortable bed with quality bathroom linens. Our meal in the dining room was very satisfying. This is definitely a step back into time but you'll really enjoy the gracious Southern spell the New Perry Hotel casts.

Room Tip: Ask for the room directly over the hotel' front entry. It features a large private balcony

Overpriced for the quality - yes they're working on making things better with the new owners, but....right now it's not currently worth the price.

The fixtures are broken/mended, there was no place to put anything by the sink, the curtains did not close all the way, the airconditioner touches one of the beds, the electrical plugs are plugged into EXTENSION CORDS (is this a fire hazard??) and the tv screen was TINY. It would be hard to see from anywhere except right in front of the tv.

Also it would be creepy for a single woman to be staying there - you get to the room by first going through an exterior door in a tiny area - and then the door of your room is to one side and the door of the other room is to the other side. No window in the little area and you've got to find the light switch. It did not feel safe. Would HATE to be in that little area with someone else who was staying in the other room.

The parking is on the back of the hotel and you have to exit the hotel on one road, turn onto a side street, and then turn into the parking lot for the rooms.

The lobby is kind of claustrophic unless you like being in a lobby surrounded by old stuff - it was like being in a crowded antique market.

Besides the room being overpriced, the hotel did not offer a free breakfast of any sort. There are other nicer hotels in Perry for less or about the same rate that offer free breakfasts.

The new owners were very nice and friendly and seemed very pleased that you were staying there.

Given that this amazing hotel is only a mile off the interstate, it is hard to believe anyone would choose the generic, ordinary stopovers that are visible from I-75. Perry has a charming redeveloped downtown just steps from the hotel. There is a restaurant as well as a tavern on site and they are both great. Dinner was wonderful country cooking and breakfast was perfectly cooked and reasonably priced. The owner and staff are incredibly friendly and we had the best waitress ever (thanks Vicky!). Every room is unique and the owners are more than happy to tell you all about the interesting history of the building and the town. We hope to return soon to enjoy the ultimate southern hospitality of the New Perry Hotel.

We were driving to Atlanta from Florida and wanted to stop somewhere for lunch and I wanted something charming and Southern. We found it! Lovely people and great food. The fried chicken was fabulous and the Buckeye Pie was oustanding! Thank you for a wonderful lunch with my husband! We will be back....to spend the night next time! Best of luck with your new endeavor. It's a wonderful piece of history.

We stopped by the New Perry Hotel on our way to Florida. While this hotel isn't right off the interstate, it's only about a 1.5 mile drive into town. Very pleasant hotel and the owners make you feel like family. Menu has a good variety and the prices are reasonable. They also have a small lounge in the hotel for your choice of beverage. It's a nice respite from your travel. Owners are working very hard to update this hotel. We'll try it again our next trip to Florida to see the continuous updating. There is a website for the hotel www.newperryhotel.com.

Room Tip: Rooms within the hotel are comparable to bed and breakfast style; motel rooms are typical size. Owne...

I read reviews and was really excited about trying this place. The grounds are nice and charming. The magnolia tree in front of the place is amazing. And I know the hotel is a struggling family run place. The value was excellent. We overnighted in Perry on our way to Disney and this was our last stop before Disney madness.

We stayed in a King room in the motor inn side, which was fine. We were in the Lucy room. I love Lucy. Who doesn't, but it was a bit of Lucy overkill and with the red (tomato or blood red, I'm not sure, but that kind of dark shade) it was a bit unsettling and I didn't sleep well at all. It was quiet enough, but neither my husband nor I slept well.

While the extra chairs and such in the room are not the typical industrial furniture, I am sure they are clean, but they are worn. So yeah, you are getting worn and kistchy, which is part of the charm. Oh, and we were given a real key. Not a plastic card. How is that for throwback! It was one of the cool things. The lobby/common area has all sorts of stuff that is an interesting throwback/look around.

The price is right, that is for sure. The pool looked ready and was all clean and ready to go, but it was closed. No big deal as we were just there for overnight. I did like that the place is pet friendly. Always a soft spot in my heart for those places.

We didn't experience the owner's friendly touch as there was another couple in the restaurant and they were being chatted up as they were in the hospitality business.

We stopped in Perry for 2 more nights on our way home so we could see some of the local history. Unfortunately we went corporate for one of the chain hotels. Neither of us had the heart to stay there again. Hopefully when this place is up and finds more of a footing it will be a better experience.

There is a long way to go getting this hotel up to the standards that they want it to be, but the owners are working hard at it.

Really wonderful staff, thank you for making us feel so welcome.
