My husband & I traditionally take a holiday vacation--just the two of us--during Christmas or New Years, depending on his work schedule. After deciding on a destination (the GA barrier islands), I started researching possible lodging and chose the Ocean Lodge because of the reviews on Trip Advisor. I always call a hotel directly before I book because I can ask specific questions and get a better feel for the place, and my call to OL affirmed my feeling that this was the type of place we were looking for. Not only was the person who answered my call (Anne) friendly, but she took time to chat, answering all my questions forthrightly and in as much detail as I needed. Her warmth and personalized attention was also a quality we found present in every staff person we encountered during our stay. It's obvious that these people love what they do and are as personally invested in seeing to their guests' comfort and enjoyment as the owner, whom we met as we were leaving. It was like being a well-loved friend who is a guest in someone's home--our every want was seen to w/a personal touch.
Now to the hotel--we LOVE the smallness of the operation, the fact that it is all-suites and caters only to adults. We want quiet, privacy, and space when we go away. Luxury is also a positive! The building construction is solid and interiors well-designed and spacious. I think every suite has a balcony, allowing outdoor relaxing & eating, if one chooses. There is a full kitchen (w/dishwasher & disposal), 2 baths--one w/shower & one w/jacuzzi/shower--both well-appointed w/great hot water, deep sink, lovely fixtures, very nice amenities (including bath-tray w/candle, loofa, and bath salts), robes & slippers. There is a closet in the BR, as well as drawers in the bedside tables & washstand. Decor is Spanish Colonial--rich, but not overwhelming, and we found the furniture to be functional and actually comfortable--a departure from most hotels, where furniture is not well-designed or replaced often enough to seat comfortably. Tile floors w/rugs--so much nicer than carpet! TVs in both LR & BR. The wireless service is pretty darn good for a hotel--free w/more than one connection available. King bed slept comfortably, and it was a pleasure to be able to open sliding doors to patio each night and sleep to the sound of waves. There were also sliding doors to patio from LR. Curtained w/both sheers & heavy drapes--when drawn offering filtered light or room-darkening, as well as insulating. Jalousie windows over the desk covered w/roman shade, could be opened, as could bathroom window w/wooden blinds in shower-bath, I imagine that, in warmer weather, one could get quite a pleasant breeze through the suite, and window treatments allow varying degrees of light & privacy. Seems like nothing was done on-the-cheap as far as construction design or decorating goes.
Breakfast was part of our room package--a nicely varied menu to choose from. I eat gluten-free and was able to have a good meal every morning. It's all cooked to order--none of the weird or plastic food found on so many "breakfast buffets." Staff are few, and it seems like everybody multitasks--people who serve breakfast also do housekeeping, etc. --Jackie, Gloria, Michelle, Suzanne, Mac, a gentleman working the front desk and two other housekeeping staff members whose name I didn't get--we felt we got to know folks a little, as everyone is so friendly, really embodying that Southern hospitality.
We had a fine dinner Christmas Eve in their lovely rooftop restaurant. I can imagine how nice it must be to eat outside there --great view of the ocean--one of the best views on St. Simon's, from what I understand.
The hotel wasn't at full occupancy, so I'm not sure how quiet it would be when it is, but we found it peaceful. The solid, heavy construction helps, and we had a corner room on the 4th floor w/ a great ocean view. (We were upgraded to this room upon arrival--a happy surprise!!). All-in-all, we were delighted w/Ocean Lodge and look forward to returning.
