Saint Simons Inn by the Lighthouse
Reviewed 14 January 2014

We received the name of this inn from the Georgia Welcome Centre (as a pet friendly location) and decided to try to spend an evening on this island (which is lovely and worth the visit). The best part about our stay here was their obvious love of pets...., our little cat was made to feel very welcome which is a bonus indeed. Our room was spacious, and while perhaps a little tired, very comfortable (especially the bed). The lighthouse area, pier and small downtown area coupled with dinner at The Half Shell made this evening a very positive experience for us. The breakfast (continental) was just fine. We recommend.

Hospitality was wonderful, as was the location of the Inn. Each room is decorated differently, as they are privately owned. Looked at 4 different rooms and they were all very nice. Breakfast and parking are provided. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will stay here, again.

My feelings are mixed in regards to our stay at the Saint Simon's Inn by the Lighthouse. There are undeniably good points about the Inn, but I didn't leave wanting to plan my next stay here.

The "good" -

The inn is in a great location. It's an easy walk to the village, the park & the pier and walk we did, several times a day. Be aware though that "by the Lighthouse' indicates it's location, not your view, unless your room has a balcony or you're in the penthouse. There are two rooms, both on the 2nd floor, that have balconies on the side of the hotel which overlook the pool and which can likely see the top of the lighthouse. The penthouse has a balcony on the front of the hotel and unless the beautiful trees across the road cover it, you can probably see the top of the lighthouse from there as well. The lighthouse is behind a one-story building across the road.

Our room was one of the Jr. Suites, #203, and it is certainly spacious as hotel rooms go. My sister- and brother-in-law had the other Jr. Suite, #106, for part of our stay and while I think #203 was the more spacious of the two, #106 had extra elbow-room as well. Neither of the suites have a balcony, though #203 looks out over the pool, while #106, on the other side of the hotel, looks out onto a neighboring roof. Still, the view from your room isn't necessarily the point on this end of the island.

The parking under the hotel is very tight, but it's covered and free and being the off-season when we visited, this didn't cause any issue for us. However, if you have a choice between a larger or smaller vehicle to travel in, choose the smaller vehicle. An elevator is available to floors 1 & 2. There is a free continental breakfast served each morning. Continental, folks...I don't understand why people read 'continental' then complain when there aren't other protein or hot options. Breakfast items were fresh and tasty and hit the spot on the two days we ate at the hotel. On the days we wanted something different, we walked to a restaurant. There is free wireless internet provided.

The refrigerator in our room was fabulous. We got ice on Saturday evening and set it on the highest shelf in the dorm-room sized refrigerator. The leftover ice was still frozen on Tuesday morning...as were several of our sodas. Keep anything you don't want frozen near the bottom of the refrigerator and set the cold dial to a medium setting to begin with.

The air conditioning/heater in our room worked very well and provided plenty of white noise. If I had one wish about the AC/heater, it would be that it had a fan only option. The white noise is the only thing that helped drown out our very noisy neighbors but the unit kicked on/off regularly since the only options were cool and heat.

The front-desk and cleaning staff were all very friendly and helpful during each of our encounters.

The "could-be-better" -

The mattress in #203 is ready to be replaced (as of Dec 5, 2013). It's not the worst mattress I've slept on, it's just worn out as are the comforter and decorative pillows. The mattress is not too hard, not too soft, but it sags toward the middle and it's hard to get comfortable on.

Based on the amount of noise you can hear from your neighbors you will think the walls are paper-thin. There doesn't seem to be any insulation or noise-barrier AT ALL between the rooms. Room #203 has a connecting door to the room next door and there may as well be a megaphone between the rooms. All of the doors in the room are ill-fitted with nothing to fill the gaps and dampen the noise. I don't recall any review mentioning the noise issues at this inn, and let's be realistic...you have to expect a little noise when you're in a hotel. But when you can clearly hear every word of the conversations taking place next door, there is a design flaw. Yesterday morning the hair dryer went on next door and until he walked back into the room and it was still running, I thought my husband was using the hair-dryer in our bathroom. Self-closing doors slamming up and down the hall sounded like gunfire inside our room and the walls shook each time. One morning a TV could be heard for several hours...not from next door...but from somewhere else...across the hall?...downstairs? Who knows? Our relatives sleeping in #106 downstairs said it sounded like a herd of elephants was parading above their heads on Sunday morning.

While the refrigerator was stellar, the rest of the kitchenette isn't. The microwave isn't powerful enough to cook a bag of popcorn. Each time it produced only half a bag. Leaving the popcorn in the microwave longer still produced only half a bag, though some was now burned and smoking. Further, if your room has a kitchenette, you might assume that silverware and a plate or two is also provided. Nope. Three wineglasses, one each in Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Baby Bear sizes, two margarita glasses and one corkscrew (which shredded every cork we pulled) was all that stocked our shelves & drawers. Paper towels? Nuh-uh. Dish soap? Negative, though one of the cleaning ladies retrieved some for us from downstairs. What is the purpose of the room having a kitchenette if you aren't going to stock it for your guests? At least tell your guests what they are responsible for providing themselves.

Were any of these issues fatal to our enjoyment of our stay in SSI? No. Did we request a different room? No, it wasn't worth the bother of moving. Did we complain? No. Upon leaving we were asked about our stay and I shared some of these comments with the lady at the front desk, but during our stay, other than offering us a different room, what were they going to do? Will we return? To SSI, YES! To the St. Simons Inn by the Lighthouse? Ummm...we'll probably check out other nearby accommodations to see if we can find something a bit more comfortable.

In the past we had always stayed at the Island Inn but when it left the BW chain we looked for something else and were so happy we found this hotel. We were in room 113 which was decorated duck egg and brown and very nice decor with lovely white shutter blinds on the window overlooking the pool. There were two queen beds and a large plasma TV and DVD player, microwave and fridge. The room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. We spent a couple of hours by the pool which has a number of comfortable padded sunloungers and the sun is on the pool from around midday until 3pm. The breakfast was wonderful. Not hot, but a huge variety of top quality products - cereals, yogurt, mixed fruit, English muffins and huge sweet muffins. Also 24 hour complimentary coffee in reception. The staff were very friendly and helpful and there was adequate parking underneath. The fact that this hotel is right opposite the lighthouse and beach and village street makes it the only place to stay - perfect. The only negative I had was that one of the Queen beds had a mattress which dipped at one side and was very squeaky, but that was a minor issue. It is really a home from home and we would definitely only choose this hotel if we come back to St Simons, our favourite island.

We stayed here last week for 4 days over Thanksgiving. The location is absolutely perfect - right behind the lighthouse/beach and very close to lots of shops and restaurants. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and there were some nice amenities - free breakfast and Wi-Fi. I also like that the rooms are all different and you can choose your specific room online. However, I felt like the cost was a bit too high considering the overall experience. The rooms (and I can say rooms, plural, because we had to switch rooms due to broken heating) were out of date and needed some upgrading/remodeling. In addition to the broken heat, the room we were moved to had a broken mini-fridge and no closet. The rooms just seemed run down, like no work had been done on them in a long while. The hallways and the bedding in our first room also had a musty smell to them, and we couldn't get a Wi-Fi signal in that room. Choose this hotel for the location, not for the quality of the rooms.

Room Tip: Each room is very much individualized, so take that into account when choosing. And it's not jus...

My husband and I travel quite a bit, and we have experienced complete dumps as well as the world's largest hotel. This small gem in SSI will be sure to amaze you. From the covered parking deck to the amazing staff (Tim is perfect!), we loved every second of our stay. We arrived for a fly-in a couple of months ago and stayed in the penthouse, which was by far better than anywhere that I have ever stayed. It beats Hampton, Hilton, Opryland Hotels, Westin, etc by a long shot! The second we got in the penthouse, we went downstairs to reserve a second night. Everything was spotless and I loved having our own private entrance. The balcony overlooking the lighthouse was magnificent and the AC works like a champ. We were already planning next year's visit before we left. The breakfast is YUMMY as well! Everything you could possibly need is in walking distance and the housekeeping staff is great. Before I could make it to the door to meet the guy bringing extra towels, he was there!! Stay here and you will be a forever guest!

Room Tip: Don't eat at the Fourth of May. They have a 72 health score!

Overall, a very nice, quaint 32 room or so Inn. It needs updating. Our room had the "little things" wrong that are the details difference between good and great. Things like missing light switches, electric outlets falling out of the wall, a rather large hole in the seam of the bed spread, and not a balance of appropriate hangers in the wardrobe. The location was great, as was the front desk clerk for most of our 3 day stay.
