Ft. Frederica National Monument is more that just a monument. It is a walk through history; especially if you are lucky enough to tour when they are having a special appearance by people who dress in period costumes and assume the roles of people who lived here. The museum has many great artifacts and books that are written in first person narration that students will love.

One cannot visit St Simons Island without being immersed in the rich history of this island. The story is told at Ft. Frederica National Historic Site. Situated on the original site of Frederica Towne and the British fort built to protect early settlers, the fort deterred Spanish invasion from the south established British control of the southern colonies. The exhibits are informative. Kids can wear replica clothing of early settlers and soldiers. The park has a Junior Ranger program that brings history alive for kids. The introductory movie is good but needs updating. The park also maintains a site commemorating the "Battle of Bloody Marsh" located a few miles south which marks the last incursion of Spanish troops.

Our family left here and kept saying "we didn't know that!" I love that we can spend 2 hours and walk away feeling like that. The home sights were fascinating with the stories of each family who lived there. We didn't want to leave but our family loves history!

So, like a lot of folks, I do the Natl Parks Passport stamps. This led me to Ft. Frederica and I really enjoyed my visit there, learning much about the Spanish/English conflict. The park was pristine during our visit and the trees with the Spanish Moss are so pretty! There isn't much left to the Fort nowadays, but it's easy to imagine the troops being there and going about their daily lives.

Very informative and interesting. My 9 yr old's favorite attraction. There was a huge storm blowing in while touring it, which made it that much more haunting, while looking at the ruins.
