“Best Grits I have ever eaten”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

Hit this place twice on our trip to the Island with the first being a lunch and the second stop a breakfast on the way home. The lunch consisted of Brunswick stew and a fried green tomato BLT. It was my first taste of Brunswick stew which I found to be very tasteful. The BLT was very good as well with large amounts of bacon and a huge slice of fried green tomato. Breakfast consisted of corn beef hash, eggs and grits. I would recommend to the cooks that they not dice their corn beef up as much, leaving it in larger chunks on the plate. However, the grits were the best I have ever eaten. The waitress explained that they put cream cheese in them. Whatever they do, they are a must if you eat here.

“Great Food!”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

We visit St. Simons Island every April - and always look forward to a visit to The 4th of May Cafe. Great "comfort food" kind of place: Fried oysters & shrimp; meatloaf; fried chicken; great sides. The staff is nice, the service is attentive, and the food is great. No frills - just good, down home southern cooking.

“Good food & Service”
Reviewed 19 April 2014

Decided to eat lunch here after seeing good breakfast reviews. All three of us had the fried green tomato BLT and all happy with the choice. There is a $2 up-charge for a real side instead of chips which we were told, but that still seems odd in a southern eatery. The sides are normally the draw. Fried okra had a nice light, but crunchy batter. We shared a piece of peanut butter pie, which was average.

We were there on a rainy Saturday, right after the noon rush and the place could have used a good cleaning, especially the shared bathroom in the back.

Good food, fair, but crowded atmosphere, with very friendly staff. With the trip, but don't have super high expectations.

“I always enjoy this place, good food, good folks”
Reviewed 17 April 2014 via mobile

The 4th of May has been part of St. Simons Island village area for many, many years. Good place that tries very hard to satisfy it's customers. Great lunch specials as well as typical shrimp dishes. Good blackened shrimp and the sides are nearly perfect. Onion Rings as large as a softball and fried okra lightly battered, good combo. Also the fried green tomatoes. They were sold out of squash casserole but I remember if from past visits as excellent. Looking for a good, relaxing stop in the village, this is it. We will return.
