We visited at lunchtime the other day while passing through the village. We were the only ones in the pub which should have rung alarm bells but we needed lunch and there was a nice sounding vegetarian squash crumble on the specials board. How I wish we'd gone with our first instincts! While my friend's sausage and mash was ok my meal was obviously a "special" straight out of the microwave. The crumble topping was soggy but underneath was just slime. Foul tasting and totally inedible. Why can't pubs realise that vegetarians want good food too? It's bad enough that our usual choice is veggie lasagne or chilli but when they advertise something on a specials board it should be that - special.

I would not knock this place. It is a traditional English pub that is trying to make a go of it. Nice atmosphere and friendly with a roaring fire in the winter. This is more of a warning to phone ahead. We called in on a Saturday lunchtime and were told that they served food all day. So, we went back early evening to be told that the kitchen had closed as they had sold out of everything. Having ordered our drinks before our meals we were stuffed (or rather were weren't) but the barman did offer to refund us, which was typical of the friendliness of people we encountered in this area. We refused and decamped afterwards to another pub around the corner.

This is a beautiful thatched pub in the canalside village of Cropredy, Oxfordshire, a short distance from Banbury. The place was built in 1497 and became a pub in 1514 - so there will be a 500th birthday party next year! Recently taken over by a young couple, their daughter and Shandy the pub golden lab, we were made to feel very welcome. A good range of real ales on offer and a nice menu (though we didn't eat there this time), prices very reasonable. There's an inglenook fireplace of course! The pub also has a tiny post office some mornings of the week and there is also a music shop in a room at the back, with a great range of guitars, banjos etc on offer. Definitely worth a visit!
