“Relaxing visit”
Reviewed 10 December 2007

This was our first stay at a bed and breakfast, therefore I cannot give a comparision. I can comment on the relaxing experience and the pleasant interactions with the Innkeepers and the staff.
I also enjoyed the interesting conversation with the other guests at the breakfast table of this historical house. I really enjoyed the breakfast of stuffed croissant french toast. The Inn met my expectations and my only disappointment was caused by the mosquitoes who claimed the shaded and charming porch for themselves. We are planning to return.

This little place was by far the highlight of the trip. From the moment we walked in and saw our names on the whiteboard outside the door, we knew it would be a good trip. All the rooms are differently themed and sized, owing to the fact that the building was once part of the military hospital on the island. We stayed in the "Mermaid" room which decorated (aside from 2 cat pictures) as it's name implies. It also included a personal deck.
As it is a bed and breakfast, you are privvied to a great breakfast cooked to order by the inn's private chef. We enjoyed a ham, egg, and artichoke omelette and also a frittata with maple sausage. Guests are also given access to a kitchen alcove with fridge, coffee, tea, and evening dessert.
The owners helped make the trip and were accommodating in our entire stay. They were always willing to offer advice on where to eat and what to see and were curious as to what we did every day. They also helped arrange at the last minute to get some roses in the room for my girlfriend's birthday and placed them in their while we were out for dinner. A very nice touch.
We did have an issue during our stay that will more than likely never be experienced by others. They were rekeying the locks in the entire place to a master key. The only problem was is that they could only do it during the weekend we were staying and, without fail, they attempted to do our room door every time that we were there. The owner could see the frustration and offered (without my prompting) to discount the stay because of the inconvenience. It's that kind of service that I appreciate.
Overall, we would happily stay their again, if only just to sit around their beautiful house and wander around the beach.

  • Liked — The room, the service, the meals, the location...everything!
  • Disliked — The problems with the door...easily rectified.

We hosted a small wedding (about 25 pp) at the Tybee Island Inn in October. We rented out the Inn for ourselves and our family to spend the night. Lloyd, the owner, was so helpful in arranging everything for us and he even officiated the beautiful ceremony. The mosquitos were biting that evening but the event went off perfectly in the gazebo. After the sun went down, the mosquitoes all but vanished. The Inn also supplied a delicious wedding cake and chilled champagne for our guests to enjoy. The rooms were clean and nicely decorated. The only complaint I had was the rug in our bathroom (we had the large Sea Captain's Suite downstairs) had alot of sand imbedded in it. It just needed to be taken outside and given a good beating. Other than that, we had a wonderful time at the Tybee Island Inn and would highly recommend this place for a small wedding or romantic getaway.

This bed and breakfast was picturesque, set back off the street with the beautiful tree in front and landscaping. The porch and patios were quaint but it was too miserable to sit outside. The misquitos were abundant and the heat was unbearable for me. I found the home clean and the owners nice and were ready to help you with plenty of suggestions on where to eat and what to do. I am a young adult who was vacationing with my parents and we stayed in the room with bunkbeds and a double. It was a long and narrow room. The best thing about it was the bathroom. It was roomy with a shower and seperate, large soaking tub. However, the room was right beside the kitchen and the noises of breakfast being made woke me up.

Having traveled throughout NC , GA and SC over the past few weeks and stayed at B&Bs in all areas' , it is honestly fair to say that the Tybee Island Inn was about the worst we have ever experienced. There must be huge differences somewhere because of all the raving reviews , but let us explain carefully about our experience.

We knew that we were being housed in a cottage because we had booked the Beach Breeze for 3 nights at the beginning of October. When we arrived , the owner instantly charged our card for the entire time. Usually at bed and breakfasts we settle up when we leave having paid the first night. This was no big deal really at the time , each establishment sets its' own rules.

Then the owner took us to our so called separate space. This turned out to be a room in someones house. Where the stairs were , it was blocked off with a small frame . This frame had some aprons hanging over it. You could actually see up (or down) the stairs as well as into their kitchen . The closets were full of junk so that we were not able to get anything in them. When the residents of the house did some cooking , the smells permeated our bedroom and to say the least it was extremely unpleasant because those cooking smells were still there when we went to bed at night .

When the owner showed us the room he pointed out that we had a deck to sit out on. This deck looked down on to a grubby back yard and to the back of an apartment block that was in fact a parking lot. It certainly was not the sort of place where we would sit out on.

The room certainly was not dirty as some others have said theirs were . It was acceptable but not pristine.

The next morning we walked to the inn for breakfast. We found that the breakfast left a great deal to be desired. Nothing seemed to be fresh , muffins , bread , raisin bread etc. For the most part it was a help yourself affair with everyone around the table jumping up and down to go to the kitchen to get something.
We would rate the breakfast as being truly mediocre , but when you consider the price paid it suddenly became less than mediocre .

The breakfast is common to all guests , but in all fairness our comments about the room relate only to that room. We have no idea about any of the other rooms.

We would not go back , or would we recommend this accommodation to anyone else. We know that there is much better value out there.

  • Liked — Nothing really
  • Disliked — The room and the breakfast , after that what is left.

The Tybee Island Inn was EXACTLY what I wanted....it has charm, quaintness, and wonderful hosts. It is close to just about anything on the island. I stayed in the Sea Captain room, which had the biggest bathtub of any room there - so I took full advantage of a long, leisurely soak !!! The inn is very clean, and you are welcomed by fresh lemonade and home made style cookies in the kitchen area. Breakfast was absolutely wonderful....blueberry pancakes and bacon made by Preston....a five star cook as far as I'm concerned. Lloyd the host couldn't be nicer....and answered any questions you may have. The grounds are so picture perfect.....big huge oaks, spanish moss, fountains, etc.....and are well maintained. We had the entire front porch - and it's wooden swing and rocking chairs - all to ourselves on a recent Saturday night. It was the perfect evening!
Highly recommended.....both the Inn and the staff !!

i stayed at the tybee island in september 2007 ..to start the food for breakfast was out of a box..such as pastrys, cereal was samples from some company ,juices and milk had a ring from sitting out,the bread had mold on it ,the main course for breakfast was the same eggs,eggs,eggs...the inn was cover with dirty windows, spiders and lets not forget the webs..porch was dirty and filled ash trays ,old yogurt left by guests that ants were living on ..guest area were not vaccumed, stuff was stuck in carpet ..that i could not even make out ..yuk!! when shown the rooms on the way to ours..they were unkept and smelled..comforters were stained, rugs dirty, linens did not match and had stains..no wonder why they kept the lights on dim ..there were cock roaches dead and alive all over the inside and out side of the inn. the jacuzzi was uncared for and look abit unsafe..how they stayed in bussiness this long is beyond me..i went out the back door and there was bike and trash built up an long and under in ..i went in the lower door thinking it was the guest back door and really grossed out ..they had linens on the floor, along with other crap..i would have to say i would never even my dog stay there..and to top it all off where were the innkeepers..they seemed to only be there long enough to run my credit card and have me sigh for the deposit and then i never saw them agin ...i could honestly say that i would have had a clean but safer stay at motel 6...
