While walking in the park, we noticed there was an art museum, so why not splurge on the $6 entry and see what they had in store? Surprisingly, this was one of the most well-curated art galleries I've ever been to.... A nice mix or contemporary and traditional, sculpture and painting, local and international. From the Kehinde Willey portraits to local artists depicting nontypical Boise landscapes (no fluffy watercoulors here, great urban realism), to the speculative, aesthetic, and cultural artifacts. All very well done for a small gallery. plus the staff were friendly, the store was great, and then we stumbled across Freak Alley downtown (murals). Who knew Boise was such a hot bed of contemporary arts?

This was a surprisingly good museum with many rooms of exhibits including many artifacts of the southwest native tribes as well as pieces by local artists. However my favorite was an exhibition by Kahn and Selesnick. It features images from Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho but with a really interesting twist. Staff was friendly. The small gift shop is loaded with above average goodies.

Wow! I'm an artist and an art teacher. I have to say, this museum had everything. Three unique and strong exhibits, each thought provoking and modern/relevant. Each exhibit had computer stations where kids could interact and get "up close" with the works. The sculpture garden was easily accessible, the kids area was very interactive. All in all, a delight. My only complaint was they had no catalogues, prints, or post cards of any of their displayed works, so I just have to use my memory.

The principal exhibit at this time is material objects. The bulk of these were 20th century items. While the various baskets and woven items were interesting, there was only a few items that were much older or especially interesting.
There were some paintings and photographs of Boise that were interesting.
A major exhibit had ended the week before we visited, and at least 25% of the exhibibit space and the entire interior statuary area were empty.
There is a beautiful garden east of the museum you can enjoy at no cost.

A nice, smaller-city art museum with emphasis on abstract and modern art. They've carved out a niche and occupy it very well. But don't come looking for a large collection of classical or early American art, because it's just not here. So out-of-town guests expecting more are likely to be disappointed. The WPA facade from the old entrance to the building is a nicely-preserved touch; too bad many people don't really stop to appreciate it fully.
