“Eclectic property, go back in time!”
Reviewed 26 July 2012

Spent the night at the restored (built in 1912!) Northside School B&B recently and enjoyed it immensely!! I had stayed at B&Bs before, but this was a first for my partner, and she loved it! What a great B&B to visit for your first B&B experience! She's definitely willing to try other B&B properties now as a result!

The restoration of the school and subsequent conversion of the classrooms to bedrooms with baths is quite amazing! The overall attention to detail and 'respect for the past' is evident throughout the property and each room is tastefully themed with each one having lots of character. The addition of an outdoor pool, hot tub and separate guest deck where you can enjoy a relaxing glass of wine are notable for sure. The owners are welcoming and helpful, though not obtrusive.

Our room was absolutely spotless and had an African theme which was quite interesting with the room accessories fitting together well. Our bed was comfortable and the bed spread and decorative pillows really helped to set it off. There is no air conditioning but the overhead fan was quiet and we found it more than adequate. There are no fridges or microwaves in the rooms, but small communal fridges are located at each end of the short hallway. Our room didn't have a view of the river valley, but rooms across the hall do (we chose the other side to avoid the afternoon sun, but realized later there would not have been an overheating problem with the room fans).

The dining room is intriguing and tastefully done with a definite antique feel. The tables are adorned with white linen tables clothes and full place settings, nicely done! The breakfast was excellent, generous and was served buffet style with several seasonal hot items, pastries, cereals and fresh fruits provided.

We walked across the bridge to the Bonners Ferry downtown and casino for some dinner and R&R and found the walk easy, taking about 10-15 minutes of easy walking. I'd certainly stay at the Northside B&B instead of the hotel at the casino, at least in the non-winter months!

Overall we would stay at the Northside School again without a doubt if/when we stay overnight in Bonners Ferry again. In reality it is more akin to a small boutique hotel then a B&B. It's high rating is well deserved!

Excellent bed and breakfast in a converted school house. 9 theme rooms. We stayed in the French Provencial room, although the others we saw were similar. One queen sized bed per room. Nicely decorated with unique antiques. Full breakfast included- bacon, eggs, quiche and huckleberry stuffed french toast made fresh, along with fruit, bread/bagels, yougrt and cereal. Do NOT miss the huckleberry stuffed french toast with huckleberry syrup. All in all the best breakfast we've had! No phones in the rooms. No air conditioning although the ceiling fan and open window was sufficient when we were there. Nice and quiet although the floors squek, which adds to the charm-it is a historically registered building. Pool is heated and there is a hot tub too. Robes provided. Baking and complimentary alcohol in the evening. Only real downside- you have to be able to climb stairs- 18 to check in and for the only first floor room. 45 stairs to the rest of the rooms. If you can do stairs-STAY HERE! The owners are wonderful and attended the school as children, so have stories to share if you are interested.

For a most reasonable price we stayed in an old schoolhouse - what a delight it was....Ruth was an amazing friendly host and the accomodation was special! We stayed in The Tuscan Room but we had the choice of other beautifully furnished rooms...The furnishings and upholstery top class with good quality bed linens and towels....the breakfast was delicious, none of your usual bacon and eggs fayre! we had pancakes, huckleberry sauce, delicious quiche, toast, yoghurts, etc etc etc...it set us up for day and all in the old school room.
Ruth gave us directions to a wildlife refuge and we saw the elusive moose, bald eagles, heron, deer and all in the most magical of settings...dusk in Idaho when the sun sets is magic.
If ever we pass through the little town of Bonners Ferry again then we'll be staying at the Northside....
The town is friendly, the museum really interesting and friendly, we had lunch at the back of a shop 'Under the sun' and had a delicious lunch sandwich and soup lunch....
Don't pass Bonners Ferry, stop for lunch and if staying overnight drive over the bridge and up the hill to the old school house...

Room Tip: All were beautiful.

Very nice old school house building that has been lovingly restored. We had room 2, which was lovely and big, with a roll top bath. Breakfast was generous and the hosts were very friendly. Only issue was following the GPS directions, which put us on the wrong side of the road down a dirt road.
