“don't go down trail 214, 'till you call us, [--]”
Reviewed 28 August 2011

My wife Connie and myself, Steve Evans of Lapwai, Idaho, decided to hike down trail 214 off of Jersey Mt. to Shepp Ranch. We left Wed. August 24. (It was my birthdfay trip, I just turned 68). Our plan was to leave the end of Forest Service Rd. 222l, off of the Mackay Bar Rd. We had reservations to spend the night of the 25th at Shepp Ranch, so we planned to camp along the trail the night of the 24th and then proceed to the Ranch on the 25th. Road 22l was not cleared so we began our trip by crawling over logs across the road. When we arrived at what we believed was the end of the road we dove off the ridge. visibility was limited but from what we could see our detailed 7.5 map just never made sense. Long story short, we were two nights on the trail and severely dehydrated when the employees of Shepp Ranch really rescued us and brought us back to health. I cannot say enough about the fine qualities of Lynn, Mike, Christy, Elli, Greg and Dave. Their good character and judgment along with their straight-ahead kindness and service was truly a source of joy and literal salvation. We will love Shepp Ranch forever and be back ASAP. Thank you Mike, Lynn and the Crew. Call us if you want to go down F.S. trail 214, and we will tell you how (and how not) to do it. Steve Evans, Lapwai

Three adult couples who are long term friends all with small children trying to relax get away from it all and enjoy each others company headed up to Shepp ranch July 25. The fun started with the Jet boat ride in. We hiked, fly fished, road horses, took jet boat tours, swam on secluded beaches, ate wonderful meals, had some fly fishing lessons and completely enjoyed ourselves. My only complaint was that I did not want to leave after only a few days. We plan to make it a yearly event. It is a wonderful wilderness setting with excellent food, helpful staff and so much to do outdoors!

I have been to Shepp Ranch twice and plan on returning. It is well worth the money. The Ranch and the surrounding area is rich with Idaho history. The vacation itself can be catered to your liking: you can be as active or as inactive as you want, you can go there with a group or alone, it's perfect for kids and adults alike. You are guaranteed of some fantastic meals and hospitality. Every person who comes to Shepp Ranch is made to feel a part of the Ranch family. I can't say enough about it!

We were made to feel like part of the family. There was always plenty to do - or just sit under the shade of an umbrella with our feet in the River of No Return. Shepp Ranch is a very unique and historical awe inspiring experience.

This is our family's second trip to Shepp Ranch. From the moment we start on the beautiful drive to Vinegar Creek, we know we are experiencing something special. The jet boat ride up the Salmon River to the ranch is spectacular and takes you miles from the closest road. My husband fly fishes along Crooked Creek as well us up or down river, depending on Mike's recommendations. Our 15 and 11 year old boys fish, hike, jump from bridges, ride mules and explore the ranch. I love to hike, read by the river and take photos. It's like going back in time to a more relaxed pace. Highlights of the trip also include the delicious, home-cooked, family style meals, the big cookout in the field complete with s'mores, and the hospitality of the staff at Shepp Ranch. This is the one vacation that our entire family agrees that we need to take each year.

We planned our stay at Shepp for the 4th night of a 6 day/5 night raft trip on the Main Salmon. After 3 days of rain, the weather turned beautiful as we made our way to Shepp. The hospitality and setting were unmatched and we were made to feel like family. There was something to do for everyone - 40 year olds to 10 year olds. If we are fortunate enough to do this river again, Shepp will be a stop!

We visited Shepp Ranch in August. This was our third trip. We discussed this being our last trip, prior to our arrival, as it is costly. Once we arrived we both agreed that yes it is pricey, but it is a great place and we will return. The ranch itself is beautiful which is a draw, but the real reason for returning is the people who are at Shepp. Lynn and Mike are wonderful, and they always have a friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable staff. For the time you are at the ranch you are welcomed into their "family". The individual cabins are cozy and very clean. It takes you back in time since the ranch is so rich in history. You have the option of being as active as you like. You can ride the horses and mules, hike, fish, play in the river, or just sit in a chair and relax as the river flows by in front of you. Don't expect to lose weight when you are at Shepp. They have phenomenal food at every meal and homemade "treats" in between. I have found myself attempting to duplicate dishes that were served. Mine are good, but theirs are better. All in all a great vacation.
