“Mama miaaaaa, never again!!”
Reviewed 20 July 2013 via mobile

If you value your money and time, there are far better places to stay on Lido island then this overpriced and drab lodging.

Uninterested staff, poorly maintained facility's and grubby rooms.

Steer your gondola away from this hotel.

My husband and I stayed at the Villa Mabapa before and after a cruise leaving from Venice. The location was perfect and the Mabapa is lovely. Way better than we had expected. Close to shopping, restaurants and a wonderful beach. Perfect view across to Venice. We were looked after by Michele who couldn't have done more for us. He treated us like royalty! We eat only one meal in the outside patio restaurant and it was fabulous. We listened to a wonderful live musician and sipped on wine...doesn't get much better than that. You can buy bus tickets at a shop next door and there is a bus stop almost in front that takes you 2 minutes down the road to catch the water taxi's. Very convenient when you have luggage. We would stay at Villa Mabapa again for sure. Thank you Michele!

Room Tip: Don't forget your electrical converter. Rooms at the front have large balcony with large floor...

Planning your dream visit to Venice? Considering the Villa Mabapa on Lido island? Look further, much further. What is advertised as an idyllic lodging is in fact more a cramped and crowded youth hostel that enjoyed its best years during the Mussolini era. We sprung for room 101 - the junior suite and ostensibly the best in the hotel, swallowing an outrageous rack rate with the promise of lagoon views and space for 4 people.

Checking in we were greeted by an uninterested front desk that had ignored our request for earlier check in, suggesting instead we occupy ourselves until 2 pm when the room would be ready. On our return, we trudged up to the room along dimly lit corridors, on carpets filthy and stained. The room was little better. And the feted lagoon view? Nonexistant. Perhaps after a healthy dose of defoliation and a team of Canadian lumberjacks. And then just maybe. The room size was adequate for two, certainly not for four; the amenities spartan and not of 4 star quality - plastic sachets of sugar and coffee, small motel-sized soaps and plastic glasses a la Motel 6.

The cleaning had been done superficially, with finger prints on the mirror, fly droppings on the bathroom lamp and dust everywhere. The sheets on the bed - advertised as queen size but in fact two singles pushed together (romantic, not) - had holes in them. Need I continue? Actually yes. Switching on the airconditioning, it clattered into life almost loud enough to drown out conversation. And so it goes on.

Fast forward now to breakfast which we had read would be served in an idyllic outdoor setting under the trees, the San Marco square beckoning a short skip across the water. Reality check please. Breakfast served instead in a tiny, sweaty room, full of diners balancing plates above their heads to avoid collision and upset. Which we were. Very upset, seeing as it was a gorgeous day and the 20-odd tables outside were empty.

I wont bore you with the bland nature of the food, the surly staff, and I wont labour my point about false advertising. Suffice it to say: The Villa Mabapa hotel is a small, dirty little rip off. You are advised to give it a wide birth.

Room Tip: Stay far away from this tourist Venus flytrap.

Admittedly having no faith in the Best Western chain, I really wasn't sure what to expect.. It turned out to be a fantastically relaxed hotel with amazing views of the city..

We spent the whole weekend using the vaporetta, which is a pretty straight forward 10 minute walk to the nearest stop.. (bare in mind that it's not 300 meters away like the hotel says though). With all our luggage it was a bit daunting in the 33 degree heat, so we got a taxi every now and then which cost around €11 each way..

The hotel is incredibly dated - but there is a strange charm about it which kind of just makes everything ok.

It offers a perfect escape in the summer when the main part of Venice gets a bit overwhelming - if I were to return in the winter though I probably wouldn't stay here though..

There's a bit of a holiday camp vibe to this place, so don't come here if you're looking for luxury , but it was perfect for a weekend break :)

Room Tip: Try and secure a room in the main building

We were recommended to book at Mabapa by friends and we were not disappointed.
The location is good for visiting Venice via the vaporetta and yet far enough away to enjoy quiet relaxation.
Hotel restaurant was good for breakfast and we also enjoyed one evening meal when it was raining and we decided not to take the short stroll to the various cafes, bars and restaurants with a range of prices to suit all pockets.
Our room overlooked the rear garden which was pleasant enough, but for our five-day stay, we'd have preferred a view across to Venice.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing Venice ...

My husband and I enjoyed 3 nights at Villa Mabapa in Lido while visiting Venice. The hotel itself is very quaint, old, beautiful in a relaxing setting among trees and beautiful maintained grounds. Right across from the ferry to Venice, the location was fantastic. Our room was very small, although I must say they were the most comfortable beds I slept in our whole trip. The outside bar among the plants & trees was very relaxing at the end of the day. The breakfast buffet was excellent. A very nice town is just within walking distance with excellent restaurants, cafes, gelato, shopping. An excellent option for those not wanting to stay in Venice!

Stayed in hotel from May 9th to 13th. Room 307 in main hotel. Very happy. We are part of a Gate 1 tour and came to Venice two days before the tour started. The hotel allowed us to stay in the same room the entire time (which sometimes can be a problem if you are part of a tour). The room was not only spacious, but very clean and well taken care of. We had a great view of the lagoon. The room has a safe and very nice size bathroom. We ate in the hotel restaurant every morning for breakfast (included with room) and two of the evenings. Food was very good and staff very friendly. There is a nice patio out front with a bar that is open until midnight.
I would highly recommend staying in Lido. Very quiet area and it is a short water bus ride to Piazza San Marco (main tourist area).
