“Holiday ruined by nasty manager”
Reviewed 19 August 2008

Ignoring the damp that spread from the bottom of the wall to the ceiling, the room was clean and spacious and we were happy.

On the last night I turned the key in the door to lock our room and it snapped off in my hand. I politely approached the night manager to ask for assistance and he became immediately aggressive, accusing me of putting too much pressure on the key and that I had to pay for it. The debate became heated and the manager then threatened my boyfriend before calling the police and swearing at us. Having left us for 15mins he then cancelled the police call and returned with a maintenance man who fixed a new lock within minutes and seemed to be saying that the fault was with the lock, not the pressure put on the key (I didn't put any on it!)

After a traumatic evening of upset we received no apology and the experience left a bitter stamp on the end of an otherwise perfect holiday. I resent the manager for ruining our last night and speaking to me with a complete lack of respect, something I am not accustomed to. I would NEVER visit this hotel again.

We read the reviews here before we went and, frankly, now wonder what on earth some people expect for their money. Our room was clean, everything worked, the bed was comfortable. The location is good, being close to an excellent bar/coffee shop and near some reasonable restaurants. There is a small supermarket just up the road. It takes about five minutes to walk to the vaporetti stops, a little longer to get to the beach.

Costs are very reasonable, so don't expect air-conditioning (the fan in your room is a fair substitute - and we were there in late July, with temperatures well over 30) or a lift. There will be noise from the street in the evening if your room is at the front and hot weather necessitates opening the windows, though it dies down by midnight.

The Lido is a good base from which to explore Venice and the other islands in the lagoon. Your approach to La Serenissima is the traditional breath-taking water-route past the Doge's Palace if you choose vaporetto Route No 1; you can retreat to the comparative calm of the Lido when the crowds and heat in the city get too much to bear.

And things generally are much cheaper on the Lido, especially food and drink. Be sure to eat at least once at the Trattoria Africa di Diana Daniela & C., a few blocks to the south of the main street (the Gran Viale). Their pasta parcels with pears and two cheeses is wonderful.

Stayed at this Hotel 3 nights. It was a welcome respite from the crowds in Venice and I would definately recommend staying on Lido rather than Venice. However, this Hotel has seen better days and is in need of an update and modernization. There was no Air-Conditioning which seems to be pretty typical of hotels in this category. In July it was hot and humid but we were able to get a good breeze from the very large windows. The floors are vinyl tile and the bathroom was clean but just barely. Breakfasts were minimal and not a lot of food was available. If you are on a budget then this may be your best option but don't expect much. There are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby. Venice is a quick boat ride (15min) and will take you to any of the usual stops. The atmosphere is more relaxed in Lido and there is a nightlife but not as elaborate or buisy as Venice.

My sister and I booked to stay at the Hotel Reiter because it was reasonably priced, close to both the beach on Lido and the water bus stops for getting around the rest of Venice.

From the moment we checked in things started to look bad. When we asked if there was a safe where we could leave valuables we were told by the man on reception that there was none but our rooms were safe - I will say some more about security later, needless to say we were already losing confidence in the place.

On receiving our key we went upstairs to our room, to find the cleaner still working in there. Admittedly it was early afternoon and we would have accepted that the room was not quite ready if it had not been for the fact that the cleaner was very rude to us and told us we could not come in - she told us to leave our bags in the hall outside the room (again a security issue) and go back to reception and wait until she was ready. We felt well and truly told off and unwelcome by this stage!

The room itself was very basic - no air conditioning, just a fan, wardrobe, desk and chairs, and a tiny bathroom.

We found security in the hotel to be very lax as there was very often nobody on reception to take keys when we went out, meaning you either left them on the reception desk at your own risk or took them with you. One evening on return from dinner the man presumably in charge of reception was sitting in the next room and didn't even bother to get up for our keys, he just gestured to us to go behind reception and pick them up ourselves.

We did not have breakfast in the hotel so can't comment about what's on offer there - though we did see the humourless cleaning lady in there on our first morning and decided to steer clear the next day!

We arrived at the Reiter around 11 am. We expected to store our bags and come back at 1400 to check-in, but the gentleman at the desk allowed us to check in early, which was a plus. The downside, however, was that the available room was on the front side of the hotel, which I'd read in other reviews is quite noisy - and it was.

One concern I had was when we returned later that evening. No one was at the desk so we looked in the next room and saw a lady cleaning. We stood there awhile and finally she acnowledged us. We said we'd like our key and she said "grab it". Not only was this rude, but totally unsecure as we (or anyone else) could grab any key we wanted. While I have to admit that we had nothing stolen during our stay, it was a nagging concern in the back of my mind the entire time.

I still rate the hotel above average because it was clean and cheap, the breakfast wasn't bad, and after all, maybe all venice hotels are lax on security. Bring earplugs or get a room in the back.

Just like other reviewers said, it was just a fine boat ride from central Venice by vaporetto. If you get the 72 hr. transportation card, all public transport is included. Lido is a perfect place for those wanting to get away from all the hustle and bustle of a tourist core. The hotel is located on the main drag, just about 3 blocks from the vaporetto station (no hills on the island). It was nice because you can reserve online and pay via credit card. also includes a private bathroom which is a gem in budget accommodations in Europe. The hotel doesn't have a lift, so be prepared to lift you own luggage up the stairs. They only have 1 hair dryer, so you have to borrow it from the front desk when you want to use it - no problem. Breakfast was effecient (included), of fresh rolls with hazelnut spread (Nutella imitation that was fine). The coffee is despensed out of one of those nescafe machines, which is mas o menos. a fine stay.

A group of 15 Conamara people syed at Hotel Reiter on the May Bank Holiday weekend. Everyone in the group found the hotel a nice place to stay. It is unpretensious but friendly and comfortable. The manager (Fabio) was very flexible and accomodating, as we needed to make some changes in types of rooms, from singles to doubles etc.
The location is great. The Lido itself is a very nice place, completely different to Venezia.
Overall we would recommend it to anyone......unless you are a bit of a fusser and have nothing to do with your time but go on the internet.
