“A still charming grand dame”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 December 2013

For some time I wanted to stay overnight at this hotel which is also a monument to the Belle Epoque and a reminder of how Lido once was. Found once, by accident, an offer I could not resist, and spent some months wondering where would I be lodged. The hotel from the outside is still grand. The reception is nicely decorated and some of the original furniture is still on the ground floor rooms (which contains an elegant restaurant). My room was in the top corner, with small square windows but was spacious, nicely decorated and had a lovely bathroom. Besides facing the main road, it was a quiet room. Breakfast was on the still charming Winter Garden. It was hard to leave the hotel after feeling so comfortable for a few days but I had a cruise to board.

We stayed for two nights at the Grande Albergo in December. Let's start with the bad bit....when we arrived the bathroom hadn't been properly cleaned. There was some hair on the floor and the loo hadn't been flshed. BUT this was not the case for the rest of the stay and room keeping blitzed the place and it was immaculate for the whole time we were there.
We just booked a basic room and it was, but the bed was huge. The furniture all dated back to the heyday of the Lido, but was all functional. The bathroom was large and we had a fantastic shower. Breakfast was served until 10am and was plentiful and varied; there wassomething for every taste from the plain and healthy to the fancy and artery clogging. The thing I love most about the hotel though were the staff. Everyone without exception was friendly, welcoming, genuinely warm and helpful. Everyone spoke perfect English but were happy to humour me when I tried to speak Italian. We didn't eat at the hotel other than breakfast but the menu looked good and it was always busy. The bar is small and has a great cocktail waiter. The spa menu was one of the most extensive I have ever seen and seemed reasonably priced but we ran out of time to get there. There are lots of really good restaurants close by as well as the beach of course, plus the journey to Venice is a short vaporetti ride away and you get to approach Venice as it always should be approached...from the water. The Lido is also easy from and to the airport. Most of all I like it as it's away from hustle of St Mark's....you can eascape. On the Sunday at the Ldio, there are street markets run by locals for locals and the restaurants are full of Italian familes. We were also lucky as the sun shone but we can't always guarantee that. All in all a great stay and I will definitely be returning because of the staff at this hotel.

We came upon this hotel by accident on a visit to the Lido. We were staying on the Giudecca and having problems with our accommodation. On a visit to the Lido we walked past this hotel and were blown away by it's appearance. Later that day, we decided we needed to relocate to finish our holiday, and took to the internet in search of somewhere new to stay. Unbelievably, we were able to find one free room at this hotel, and thanks to the booking website it was at a very good rate. We snapped it up immediately.
We arrived with high expectations and the hotel met them all. The staff were friendly and approachable, the decor was stylish and attractive, the room spotlessly clean, well presented and comfortable, and the breakfasts were substantial and of a good quality.
We will be returning to Venice and there is no doubt that we will look no further than this hotel for our accommodation. A wonderful find.....

This hotel is in a magnificent position, situated between the beach and the lagoon.
For some years it has been our wish to stay there and we were not disappointed. The interior décor is very 'art deco' with bedrooms being quite grand if not so luxurious. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the locality. Breakfast is a bit of a disappointment if you are expecting a full English. However, this is more than made up for by the standard of service provided. We were a little disappointed by the quality of coffee served, especially in Italy! Both machines on the buffet were on the blink and it took us some time to catch on to the fact that others were ordering cappuccinos from the waiters. Also the literature states quite clearly that there is free tea and coffee served in reception. This was not the case. You have to pay a small fee for wi fi, or alternatively fiddle around with bits of paper for a free 20 minutes per day. This seems quite inappropriate by modern standards. All in all we recommend if you can get a good deal.

Room Tip: High up on the front.

The hotel looks beautiful from the outside and has a wonderful bar and terrace out the front to enjoy some cocktails. The inside is not quite as sharp, however we had a really nice room and can't complain. Italian buffet breakfast is generally not amazing, but there was a good variety on offer here. It's a really short walk from the hotel to the beach and there are some nice restaurants and cafe's close by. It is really easy to catch water busses or taxis to the main island and we found it very pleasant to get back to quiet Lido island after spending the day in Venice, which was overflowing with tourists.

It was my first time to Venice so had no idea what was where etc etc. I chose this hotel because it looked good and was a reasonable price (for Venice). Got off at the Lido boat stop OK and walked up the pleasant street of cafes to the hotel. Very impressive frontage but once through the door it becomes very ordinary and in places a bit tatty. Small reception desk manned by very helpful staff who told us which boats to catch etc in perfect English. We were on the 4th floor and the room was OK apart from the shower. The shower cubicle had a hole in the corner so water would pour all over the floor. We had to use all the towels to mop up the puddles. It is also a power shower so beware, as when I got in the shower placed the head away from me and turned it on, the power is so great it swung round and sprayed me full in the face with cold water! The beds are great if you like them very very firm. Warning - close the window at night. We left it open and I was bitten 15 times by mosquitoes which are still healing 3 weeks on. Breakfast is disappointing with scrambled liquid egg and overdone bacon. Drinks are self service from a coffee machine and only with luke warm water. We had to beg for a pot of boiled water for some tea. Drinks outside in the evening on sofas by the outside bar were very pleasant. You get 15 mins free WiFi a day which is fine for checking emails etc but all the TV channels are in Italian. In summary it's a perfectly adequate hotel but If I returned to Venice I would probably stay near St Marks square.
