Grande Albergo Ausonia & Hungaria

Reviewed 10 February 2014

We arrived here in between downpours last weekend and first impressions were good.
The exterior was grand & certainly felt like we were arriving outside a top end hotel.
The reception area was modest, the staff very friendly & informed with excellent English spoken.
We had upgraded to a suite of rooms and although not a four star, they were grand enough, traditional, tasteful & clean. The bathroom was clean, with a huge corner bath; the wooden floors of the rooms were polished, the bed was huge & our views out onto the front of the hotel were cool, a lovely terrace bar & gardens. The rooms had an overpowering and cheap smelling "air freshener" / diffuser which I could have done without, and the shower had a broken base, which didn't effect the shower but was the only small complaint so far. We were advised to avoid Venice that evening due to high tides & no wellies, we checked the bar at the hotel, no cocktails, just one couple and a few tumbleweeds! In the summer, the Lido would be magic, really buzzing, in Jan it was quieter but we found a friendly little street bar round the corner from the hotel & a great Italian restaurant further down the street. There are plenty of stores & shops open in close vicinity to the Hotel & the water ferry terminal is a few minutes walk; so it really is a doddle. Much less hectic than Venice. And in summer, the sandy beach nearby would be magic.
The Thai Spa is very smart at the hotel, but pricey. We didn't have a treatment, but we used the
other less expensive spa facilities & had a very relaxing afternoon, sauna, steam rooms, big Jacuzzi, wooden day beds etc; chilled out on green tea, big fluffy towels & new age music :)
The breakfast is good enough, they have plenty of fresh fruit, cereals, eggs, bacon, pastries & croissant. Homemade fresh yogurt in a freezing churn which is delicious & more like ice cream & the coffee was excellent. I know it's tempting to pull some places apart in these reviews, but frankly, it was a good value hotel, that wasn't run down or worn out as some reviews claim. If you want a clean, smart family friendly hotel with great amenities, a beach on the doorstep & Venice five minutes away by water bus; this is a good one to choose. I would definitely stay here again & again. Thanks for a lovely weekend.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a suite if you have the option.

The interior of the hotel is inversely proportional to what looks from the outside.
Reception, corridors, breakfast room, bar, bedrooms (classic), everything seems to go back dozens and dozens and dozens and dozens of years ago. But this does not add a "historic" charm to the environment, but it really does appear now decrepit and very dismal. Everything is worn, chipped, rusty, faded ... furnished without taste, poorly papered...
And my question is: who gave to this hotel 4 stars?? Needs a massive modernization otherwise it can not be considered more comfortable and decorous than a 2 star hotel...barely...

The outside of the hotel is definitely Grand. The location was perfect if you wanted to walk to the beach and to the water taxi area. The room was not that big, but was very neat and clean. There were restaurants and stores all on the same street. There was dancing outside one night which was interesting to watch. We had fun!

We stayed at this hotel in August 2013 and looked amazing from the outside. Very different inside and in need of a good lick of paint and new carpets. We stayed in a suite and expected 5 star although the room was very spacious the furniture was a little dated and the bathroom well what can I say ..... Their was no soap in the dispenser and no sanitary facilities and very cheap toilet paper also the bathroom door did not lock, when I mentioned this to reception I was told that it was their policy to not have locks on the bathroom door when children are staying in the room ..... So why have a broken lock on the door??? As for the dispenser being emptied I was told rather abruptly that the housemaid must have forgotten! We paid nearly 200 pounds for a one night stay in a supposedly 5 star hotel which should be 3 star. In the height of the season the restaurant wasn't even open. Definitely would not recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Don't bother paying 5 star prices for a budget hotel inside but looks 5 star outside

For some time I wanted to stay overnight at this hotel which is also a monument to the Belle Epoque and a reminder of how Lido once was. Found once, by accident, an offer I could not resist, and spent some months wondering where would I be lodged. The hotel from the outside is still grand. The reception is nicely decorated and some of the original furniture is still on the ground floor rooms (which contains an elegant restaurant). My room was in the top corner, with small square windows but was spacious, nicely decorated and had a lovely bathroom. Besides facing the main road, it was a quiet room. Breakfast was on the still charming Winter Garden. It was hard to leave the hotel after feeling so comfortable for a few days but I had a cruise to board.

We stayed for two nights at the Grande Albergo in December. Let's start with the bad bit....when we arrived the bathroom hadn't been properly cleaned. There was some hair on the floor and the loo hadn't been flshed. BUT this was not the case for the rest of the stay and room keeping blitzed the place and it was immaculate for the whole time we were there.
We just booked a basic room and it was, but the bed was huge. The furniture all dated back to the heyday of the Lido, but was all functional. The bathroom was large and we had a fantastic shower. Breakfast was served until 10am and was plentiful and varied; there wassomething for every taste from the plain and healthy to the fancy and artery clogging. The thing I love most about the hotel though were the staff. Everyone without exception was friendly, welcoming, genuinely warm and helpful. Everyone spoke perfect English but were happy to humour me when I tried to speak Italian. We didn't eat at the hotel other than breakfast but the menu looked good and it was always busy. The bar is small and has a great cocktail waiter. The spa menu was one of the most extensive I have ever seen and seemed reasonably priced but we ran out of time to get there. There are lots of really good restaurants close by as well as the beach of course, plus the journey to Venice is a short vaporetti ride away and you get to approach Venice as it always should be approached...from the water. The Lido is also easy from and to the airport. Most of all I like it as it's away from hustle of St Mark's....you can eascape. On the Sunday at the Ldio, there are street markets run by locals for locals and the restaurants are full of Italian familes. We were also lucky as the sun shone but we can't always guarantee that. All in all a great stay and I will definitely be returning because of the staff at this hotel.

We came upon this hotel by accident on a visit to the Lido. We were staying on the Giudecca and having problems with our accommodation. On a visit to the Lido we walked past this hotel and were blown away by it's appearance. Later that day, we decided we needed to relocate to finish our holiday, and took to the internet in search of somewhere new to stay. Unbelievably, we were able to find one free room at this hotel, and thanks to the booking website it was at a very good rate. We snapped it up immediately.
We arrived with high expectations and the hotel met them all. The staff were friendly and approachable, the decor was stylish and attractive, the room spotlessly clean, well presented and comfortable, and the breakfasts were substantial and of a good quality.
We will be returning to Venice and there is no doubt that we will look no further than this hotel for our accommodation. A wonderful find.....
