Was very happy with our stay and going back in September. Easy to get to Venice by free boat and lovely pool and private beach. Our favourite was the beach bar which served great food. We stayed in July, for 4 days, and the staff were very good to us, and our room enormous and beautifully decorated. Superb hotel laundry and room service.

The only amazing thing about this hotel is the arrival there by boat...from there everything disappoints.
Reception staff is just doing its job, nothing more.
The room is small for the price and weirdly decorated. It's dated with none of the usual modern amenities found in 4+ stars hotels. I needed an iron which was not in the room so I called the reception that told me that it's not possible and hung up!
The worse is probably the beach where you would expect some sun beds and umbrellas but instead you can rent a cabana for 200 to 400 euros!! Never seen this before anywhere in the world...
The breakfast is a disaster too with a self service, over busy staff and not even fresh juice for eg...
The 500e room and 400e a day beach beds makes you think it's aimed at super wealthy people who don't count their money but then at the same time the poor service and breakfast is not luxury at all...so I just don't understand this hotel !
Oh and the swimming pool is small, in the shade and next to a fairly busy road!

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your kind feedback; of course we are very sorry to read your disappointment, and we invite you to better explain your experience writing us to marketing@hotelexcelsiorvenezia.com , indicating your full name and dates of stay.

We are sorry if you feel that "normal technical items" were missing in your room, such as a simple iron. We wish to to highlight that unfortunately, due to Italian strict safety law, hotels are not authorized to offer irons inside Guest rooms, so this is why Guests cannot find this item in the accommodation.

Cabanas are available at different rates, depending on the position and it is possible also to enjoy discounted rates, with 50% off the official rate, for renting a tent hut in the afternoon; this allow Guests to enjoy a cabana also at around 80 Euros per day and so on, depending on the position. Our Beach Office is glad to explain in detail to our Guests all possibilities available during the day, to enjoy our Excelsior beach.

We thank you again for your feedback, as comments allow us to improve ourselves and our dedication to the Clientele, and remain at complete disposal for any further assistance and clarifications.

Sincerest regards,

The private launch to and from St Mark's square is in itself an attraction (particularly with children!) and a reasonably frequent service meant we could sight-see, visit the Biennale in the mornings while relaxing on the hotel's Adriatic beach in the afternoon. Save up for a cabana, the (expensive) luxury beach huts with room service on the beach - this really is a higher form of civilisation.

The beach restaurant, La Taverna, doesn't seem to enjoy the guest support it once had which is a pity - maybe it's the prices - but the bar food a level above on the terrace with gorgeous sea views and breezes is fine.

I can't imagine staying anywhere better in Venice in the summer.

Room Tip: You can't beat the sea view!

We stayed for 5 nights in this hotel from the 28th -2nd August 2013. This was a treat to celebrate my coming of an age. It was my first time in Venice and I was very impressed with the water taxi service to the hotel. We had a really nice room on the 7th floor with fantastic views overlooking the well kept beach. On occasion we ate around the pool during the day and on the terrace in the evening, which I found so relaxing. The food was really nice in all areas and the staff were nice, especially Tony. The gym was extremely spacious and the equipment was the best I've seen. The beach was unbelievably clean and the sea was calm with hardly any waves which made it a pleasure to swim in. Overall I thought the hotel was really nice and the only criticisms I have, was the cabanas on the beach were really expensive, so I stayed around the pool. and there wasn't any clear information made about the hotel from the reception on arrival, it was only when we asked at reception and then we were told all the information was on the TV. ( I didn't go there to watch TV) That wont deter me from going back again.

Stayed at this hotel for three nights on a reduced rate through secret escapes, as part of a three week trip travelling around Northern Italy. This was supposed to be one of the highlights of our trip and instead was one of the worst hotels we stayed at.

Upon checking in we were abruptly told we couldn't access the hotel for well over an hour but we could leave our luggage 'securely' with them. We went for a walk around the Lido (largely unimpressive and not a great start to our Venice experience) then returned to find our luggage still sat in reception. By this point we could get to our room and were told our bags would be brought up to us. The room was a total disppointment, sold as a 'courtyard room' it transpired this meant it looked over the roof of the hotel instead of a sea view, it stank of smoke, every milimeter was weirdly decorated in a lucid green (even the padded ceiling?!) and the tap to the shower came off in my hand.

45 minutes later we walked down and helped ourselves to our bags without question (secure??!!) then went to the pool area that was completely in the shade by half 5 so we decided to go to beach, however were told if we wished to use one of their 'caribannas' (glorified tents) then it would cost us €200/day?! Alternatively we could use our own towels to lie on the concrete man made pier.

As I attempted to tell the rude receptionist the problems we'd had and my concerns over our luggage, she wouldn't even come off the phone to listen to me (just cradled it on her shoulder and asked me 'what?' even though I said I'd rather wait until she was finished) and the only feedback she would give was that housekeeping would spray some airfreshener for us and she'd check the amount of time our bags were in reception for. Totally useless

On the third day our room door handle broke and despite ringing reception innumerous times no one answered so we had to leave our room open while not it in, which I was distinctly uncomfortable but yet again the reception woman was totally dismissive and unhelpful.

Upon checking out we found we had been charged for drinks we had not had and had to argue several times to not pay for them.

As we booked through an agent I didn't expect the best room in the hotel, however I wouldn't even give it 4*s. The reception staff were particularly rude, the decor was tired and shabby and the room was smaller than many 3* hotels I have stayed at.

Room Tip: Don't book!

We stayed for 5 nights at the Excelsior and found the whole experience wonderful. The rooms were impressive, the journey on the private FOC launch to and from Venice amazing, the service exceptional and the food faultless. We had breakfast daily and one gala meal during our stay and the presentation and quality was not found wanting. I would like to offer some constructive criticism – that I hope the hotel take note of. They need to sort out their Wi-Fi, organise a complimentary room for guests to change in before leaving and finally move Francesca off reception to back of house or onto a customer services course since she spoils the rest of the staffs amazing work. Don’t let these small things put you off – this is a great hotel and staying on the Lido gives you a breather from manic Venice.

We stayed at the Hotel Excelsior and arrived via the launch from St Mark's Square and all I can say is WOW what a way to travel!! Catching the ferry to St Mark's Square is easy and well signposted but quite expensive but a lovely way to get your first glimpse of Venice (you can also catch a ferry and get off at the Lido but you will need to catch a taxi as it is a 30 minute walk to the hotel from the ferry dock with luggage). We had booked 2 rooms as they do not do family rooms (1 child can stay in with 2 adults but as we have 2 children we had to book 2 rooms). The hotel put us in rooms next door to each other but as they were in the corner they also had a foyer to both rooms which you could lock the outer door and then have the two bedroom doors open so making a mini suite. The double room was carpeted and a little smaller than the other which had twin beds and laminate flooring but also a seating area too. The rooms had recently been refurbished and were in immaculate condition and extremely clean with lovely toiletries, slippers and robes. The launch to St Mark's Square is every 30 minutes so bear this in mind when deciding to go into Venice - there is no launch between 1pm and 2.30pm. Venice itself was completely mad and very very busy. When we arrived on our first full day there we were greeted by a lovely man from the Council who was offering free boat trips to a Murano glass factory. All we had to do was watch the display of glassblowing and have a look around the factory shop - there was absolutely no pressure to buy (just as well as one colourful glass tumbler was 100 euros)! We thought there must be a catch but there wasn't and was great as we had already planned a trip there so to get something for free in Venice was amazing. The food and drink in St Mark's is reasonably priced but we chose to eat on the Lido each night. There is not a great deal of choice if you don't eat fish other than pizza and pasta but was OK as we were only there for 3 nights. The hotel food and drinks are very expensive - 7 euros for a coke. The way my children drink the stuff I was not going to be paying that so bought bottled drinks when we were out and drank them in the room. The pool area is fab and very welcome after a long day sightseeing but the pool does close at 6pm as this is when the lifeguard goes off duty. I think you can still stay in the pool if you choose but be aware there is no lifeguard after 6pm. The beach is a lovely extra and the water clean and warm. Don't even attempt to hire a cabana on the beach as they are very expensive - 100 euros + - and are largely used by locals who buy them for the summer and use then as beach huts to store all their beach gear in. The breakfast was amazing with a fantastic choice of food - fresh fruit (whole and sliced), yoghurts, cold meat, cheese, sausages, eggs, beans, tomatoes, potatoes, toast, rolls, croissants, pancakes, cereals, cakes (!) and also a good selection of diabetic/gluten free foods. We will definitely be staying again!!!

Room Tip: Try to get a side room or sea view as the rooms on the road side are a little noisier.
