Hotel Excelsior Venice
Ranked #8 of 33 Hotels in Lido di Venezia

i encourage you to read the many reviews on Trip Advisor and then coe back and read this one. I will start by saying the TA reviewers generally did a nice job describing this hotel. People love it, people hate it but overall most people believe it is a viable option to staying in the center of Venice especially during the hot and crowded summer months.'
You will like:

--The timely and very cool boat into Venice which runs from the hotel every half hour from 9 am to midnight, Just walk on when you are ready and you'll be at San Marco in a fast 15 minutes.
--The cabanas. Overpriced of course but a great way to see how Italian families enjoy their beach vacations. There is a place to change and a nice day bed and loungers to view the Adriatic. The beach is clean and the water cool and crisp.
--The restaurant La Taverna right down the street
--The service and the staff
--The breakfasts (although you will be bored with the food after a few days).
--The pool.
--The view from your terrace (get an ocean front room on floor 6 or 7)

You will not like

--The food at the fancy restaurant. Not recommended--overpriced and not great.

--The bar (boring). The lack of a "scene" and the bad music.

--The fact that something will go wrong. We got locked in our room. The electronic key did not work and we were forced to move to another room. They did, however, handle it well and helped us move.

--The prices. Higher than they need to be but breakfast included.

In short, we havd a great relaxing time. The hotel is a bit remote but you are in Venice in a jiffy with the punctual boat. Very relaxing and an interesting way to see Venice. We spent about half the time at the hotel and half sighseeing in Venice. A great week.

--

Room Tip: high floor sea front a must.

I stayed at the Hotel Excelsior for 8 nights during early July 2014. The hotel has many positives and some negatives but if you want to go to Venice but be away from the hustle and bustle of the city on a gorgeous stretch of the Adriatic, this is the hotel for you, but be prepared to spend. Let's begin with the positives: the customer service. The customer service at this hotel is phenomenal. They have a team of five women at the front desk who will help you with absolutely everything and put on a smile while doing it. For instance, I wanted to visit Verona for the day. The women at the front desk set everything up and answered every question I had. The customer service at the Excelsior is impeccable. The rooms were also quite nice, I had booked the smallest sized room in the hotel but yet there was ample closet space, a sizable 4 piece bathroom and more than enough living space. The pool at the excelsior is also very nice and large. If you do choose to stay here, select breakfast with your package, as the breakfast is very large and for the most part, very good. depending on who you are the location is a positive or a negative. It was nice to be away from hot and sweaty Venice and there was a free shuttle service to and from venice every half hour. The problem is going anywhere other than San Marco. The airport, train station, and other islands all require a separate shuttle. However, for those wanting to go to Murano, a glass company charters a boat and the ride is free. The negatives include: lunch and dinner at the hotel. The prices for lunch and dinner are astronomically high (9 Euro for a Diet Coke) and the meals are mediocre at best. The beach is fine (Not like the Caribbean, North Americans!) but the cabana rental is 200 Euro and 80 Euro for every additional chair (2 chairs included), this makes visiting the beach very inconvenient. But, there are more positives. On the Lido, the hotel is in a very good location, walking distance from better restaurants, a tennis club, and close to the bus stop for easy travel all over the island. The hotel itself was built over 100 years ago and it is a beautiful, historical hotel. It has undergone many renovations and has every modern convenience. Overall, I would recommend staying here under two criterion: Be Prepared to Spend, or leave the property, and be okay with the fact that you are on a beach resort that HAPPENS to be near to Venice. be prepared to visit Venice only once or twice on your trip. I wouldn't recommend that Americans and Canadians stay here though, you will be disappointed that the beach is not like the Caribbean and most of us come to Europe for the culture, not resort style living. I can't speak for Europeans but it seemed that most Europeans were very happy with the beach and content not being close to Venice. Most of the time on the boat to Venice, it was just Americans and Canadians. Overall, the trip at the Excelsior was an amazing one.

Room Tip: All the rooms are very nice, but of course overlooking the beach is best. Make absolutely sure to g...

We had a weekend here and enjoyed it very much. The rooms were spacious, well specified and opulent. The facilities were also top notch and included a large swimming pool, excellent gym with modern equipment and a wonderful deck to have a sundowner on. The shuttle boat to and from St. Mark's square was also a real bonus.

I'd definitely come back, the staff were very pleasant and the breakfast was great. Despite being a very large hotel, it felt more intimate somehow.

My husband and I and our 2 kids stayed at the Excelsior for 3 nights and had a wonderful, relaxing time. It's a very easy water taxi to San Marco Square, so we spent 2 mornings sightseeing and the rest of the time relaxing at the pool. Perfect mix. The hotel is lovely and our room was perfect. A very large room with a king bed and 2 comfortable rollaway so for the kids. The staff was friendly, helpful and very accommodating especially Alessandro and the concierge desk. The only tiny negative is the hair dryer in the room. I didn't go to the gym but it looked very nice! I would highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed at Hotel Excelsior from Monday 23rd June to Friday 27th and wanted to say what a great hotel this is. We booked with Secret Escapes and having read a few poor reviews before we went were a little worried, we were therefore very pleasantly surprised. Staff were friendly. We had a deluxe double room which was beautiful and very clean. Breakfast was good. Yes the prices for food and drink in the hotel are a little steep but we were so well looked after and the staff were so courteous that we didn't mind too much. Never stayed in five star before so wasn't really sure what to expect - no tea/coffee making facilities in the room, no iron either which would have been useful and a very expensive mini bar which we avoided. The shuttle to San Marco always ran punctually and was great. To be able to lie around the pool all day then go off and see the sights in the evening was a great way to see Venice without being stressed. I would thoroughly recommend staying here.

I first came to the excelsior age 10 as 1 of 7 children to swim. It was fun. Now 57 years later travel my wife rented a terrific apartment on the Grande Canal for a week. I wrote to the hotel before leaving San Francisco to see if we could be guests for the day. They confirmed everything guest services were exceptional. Got a cabana in the first row. Swam, swam. Had a fantastic lunch at the beachside brasserie in wet bathing suits. Swam til the sunset. Took the Hotel lunch back to Piazza St Marco. Vaperettoed home. Simply a fabulous day. Why not try it?

We were surprised to read some of the negative comments posted about this hotel. We stayed from 19th-24th June and had a very enjoyable stay. After having visited Venice may times, we decided to try staying on the Lido as we wanted to try a beach/city combination - we were not disappointed with our decision as it offered the best of both worlds. The hotel is spacious and comfortable, extremely clean, ordered and well managed. Our room was spacious although the fabric/colour combo's were 'interesting'! we found all the staff we came into contact with to be friendly, polite and helpful. As has previously been mentioned, he breakfasts were very good, with plenty of choice and items were freshly replenished even near to the end of breakfast service. A good choice of lunches (poolside or in the restaurant or terrace) were on offer that catered for differing appetites/tastes. We elected not to eat from the dinner menus, choosing instead to eat just across the road in La Tavernetta (don't be put off by its proximity to a small side road), the food is authentic and great!... or to catch the complimentary launch into Venice. The launch is a great bonus, running half hourly until late in the evening, meaning that dinner needn't be rushed.. and giving time for a few extra digestivos! Unfortunately, some of the hotel guests did seem to expect that their 5* experience gave them the right to be ungracious to, overly-demanding, and downright dismissive of the staff who in our experience tried to do everything they could to be helpful and attentive. We would certainly be happy to return.
