“Fabulous situation for hot weather in Venice”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2014

This Hotel runs a boat service every 30 mins to St Marks Square and back until late so perfect. The Service was great, nothing too much trouble. The beach and sea was wonderful and the Hotel pool really lovely. Take lots of money for Venice. Certainly recommend a Hotel on the Lido in Summer.

Room Tip: All rooms are beautiful but a sea view would be excellent, however we had a view where we could just...

We spent 4 nights at the Excelsior for our "mini-moon" last week (July 22nd - 26th). From the airport you can take the either the water taxis or the vaporetto (water buses). The blue line or the red line will take you to Lido S.M.E. From S.M.E. you can take a bus (think it is the V), which stops close to the hotel. We actually walked to the hotel, took about 15-20 minutes down the main street then just follow the beach road.

I was close to giving this review a five stars, but it only just missed it (if only there was a 4.5!). There were a couple of simple things that would have made this perfect.

Service - The staff were fantastic, which you would expect in a 5 star hotel, but you don't always find this. The lady on the desk (Suzanne I think) checked us in and then showed us to our room, nice personal touch. We were sent complimentary prosecco and chocolate dipped strawberries shortly after checking in, which we really appreciated. We also had a slight emergency, which turned out to be nothing. I thought I had lost my wedding ring (turned out it was in the towel!). All the staff were very helpful as I searched high and low for it from the maids, front desk to the boat drivers.

The room - We stayed in the classic double room, which is actually the lowest level of room, but it was a very good size. The bed was huge! I'm 6'6 and had no issues with feet hanging out the bottom. The bathroom was very big as well and the walk in shower was very powerful when turned up to the full setting. The room design is very Moor-ish and I can imagine that wouldn't be to everyone's taste, but we liked it. The room doesn't come with any tea/coffee facilities, which was odd, no iron/ironing board and the hair dryer was very poor (bring your own).

Breakfast - We loved breakfast! From the cold meats and boiled eggs to the hot food, mimosa's, pastries and even a gluten free selection of food. I did also notice that there was no issues ordering food such as porridge from the kitchen. Everything I saw led me to believe there would be no issue requesting other things say a poached egg.

The Boat Service/Location - As has been mentioned before the location will work for some but not for others. Lido is a 10-15 minute boat ride from central Venice. For us this was great as we could get away from the crowds. The boat service the hotel puts on runs every 30 mins (break around 1pm - 2pm for lunch. The boats are fantastic, they really look the part. The drivers are very friendly and helpful. The mooring in Venice is so close to Piazza San Marco its unbelievable. They must be paying a fortune for it! The service runs until approx 11:30/12:00 at night as well, very handy.

Pool/Beach - The pool is a very good size and it never seemed overly busy. The attendants round the pool brought towels to you when you arrive. It looks fantastic at night as well. The beach, someone mentioned that the cabana's make the use of the beach difficult. I am not entirely sure how that is. Yes, there are numerous cabanas and they are very expensive, although there is clearly a very wealthy crowd at this hotel who can afford it, but there is plenty of room in front of the cabana's to just throw a towel down on the beach and enjoy the sun. We didn't actually go in the sea and there are signs that there are submerged rocks but that didn't seem to stop many others going in. The beach itself, yes has shells, but around the hotel it is combed every morning before 7am (earliest we were up). It is not, as someone else stated, a Caribbean style beach nor is the water, but it was still good.

Restaurant - This was quite expensive so we didn't eat there. Same reason we didn't go to the bar. We did eat around the corner at La Tavernetta (my review is currently pending approval, but to sum up its great!). We did come back on the Friday evening and walked past the dining area at 10pm where we overheard a family asking if the restaurant was still open and the reply was that the kitchen was now shut. That seemed very odd for a hotel on a Friday night.

Overall - We would absolutely recommend this hotel! Although good look getting in during the Venice Film festival its currently around £700 a night for the classic room. We paid less than that for our 4 nights with flights per person.

The hotel itself was fabulous with lovely friendly staff , everything about it was immaculate . The only let down was the breakfast area , it was meant to resemble a taverna but didnt quite make it , which was such a let down as all other areas were 5 star standard . Also the food , decor and service were average at best , definitely sub standard . At night the hotel was extremely quiet as the majority of guests ate and drank else where , a bottle of beer and a cup of coffee cost € 19 . Maybe if the hotel drinks and food were affordable the guests would stay in and the hotel would have some atmosphere !

i encourage you to read the many reviews on Trip Advisor and then coe back and read this one. I will start by saying the TA reviewers generally did a nice job describing this hotel. People love it, people hate it but overall most people believe it is a viable option to staying in the center of Venice especially during the hot and crowded summer months.'
You will like:

--The timely and very cool boat into Venice which runs from the hotel every half hour from 9 am to midnight, Just walk on when you are ready and you'll be at San Marco in a fast 15 minutes.
--The cabanas. Overpriced of course but a great way to see how Italian families enjoy their beach vacations. There is a place to change and a nice day bed and loungers to view the Adriatic. The beach is clean and the water cool and crisp.
--The restaurant La Taverna right down the street
--The service and the staff
--The breakfasts (although you will be bored with the food after a few days).
--The pool.
--The view from your terrace (get an ocean front room on floor 6 or 7)

You will not like

--The food at the fancy restaurant. Not recommended--overpriced and not great.

--The bar (boring). The lack of a "scene" and the bad music.

--The fact that something will go wrong. We got locked in our room. The electronic key did not work and we were forced to move to another room. They did, however, handle it well and helped us move.

--The prices. Higher than they need to be but breakfast included.

In short, we havd a great relaxing time. The hotel is a bit remote but you are in Venice in a jiffy with the punctual boat. Very relaxing and an interesting way to see Venice. We spent about half the time at the hotel and half sighseeing in Venice. A great week.

--

Room Tip: high floor sea front a must.

I stayed at the Hotel Excelsior for 8 nights during early July 2014. The hotel has many positives and some negatives but if you want to go to Venice but be away from the hustle and bustle of the city on a gorgeous stretch of the Adriatic, this is the hotel for you, but be prepared to spend. Let's begin with the positives: the customer service. The customer service at this hotel is phenomenal. They have a team of five women at the front desk who will help you with absolutely everything and put on a smile while doing it. For instance, I wanted to visit Verona for the day. The women at the front desk set everything up and answered every question I had. The customer service at the Excelsior is impeccable. The rooms were also quite nice, I had booked the smallest sized room in the hotel but yet there was ample closet space, a sizable 4 piece bathroom and more than enough living space. The pool at the excelsior is also very nice and large. If you do choose to stay here, select breakfast with your package, as the breakfast is very large and for the most part, very good. depending on who you are the location is a positive or a negative. It was nice to be away from hot and sweaty Venice and there was a free shuttle service to and from venice every half hour. The problem is going anywhere other than San Marco. The airport, train station, and other islands all require a separate shuttle. However, for those wanting to go to Murano, a glass company charters a boat and the ride is free. The negatives include: lunch and dinner at the hotel. The prices for lunch and dinner are astronomically high (9 Euro for a Diet Coke) and the meals are mediocre at best. The beach is fine (Not like the Caribbean, North Americans!) but the cabana rental is 200 Euro and 80 Euro for every additional chair (2 chairs included), this makes visiting the beach very inconvenient. But, there are more positives. On the Lido, the hotel is in a very good location, walking distance from better restaurants, a tennis club, and close to the bus stop for easy travel all over the island. The hotel itself was built over 100 years ago and it is a beautiful, historical hotel. It has undergone many renovations and has every modern convenience. Overall, I would recommend staying here under two criterion: Be Prepared to Spend, or leave the property, and be okay with the fact that you are on a beach resort that HAPPENS to be near to Venice. be prepared to visit Venice only once or twice on your trip. I wouldn't recommend that Americans and Canadians stay here though, you will be disappointed that the beach is not like the Caribbean and most of us come to Europe for the culture, not resort style living. I can't speak for Europeans but it seemed that most Europeans were very happy with the beach and content not being close to Venice. Most of the time on the boat to Venice, it was just Americans and Canadians. Overall, the trip at the Excelsior was an amazing one.

Room Tip: All the rooms are very nice, but of course overlooking the beach is best. Make absolutely sure to g...

We had a weekend here and enjoyed it very much. The rooms were spacious, well specified and opulent. The facilities were also top notch and included a large swimming pool, excellent gym with modern equipment and a wonderful deck to have a sundowner on. The shuttle boat to and from St. Mark's square was also a real bonus.

I'd definitely come back, the staff were very pleasant and the breakfast was great. Despite being a very large hotel, it felt more intimate somehow.

My husband and I and our 2 kids stayed at the Excelsior for 3 nights and had a wonderful, relaxing time. It's a very easy water taxi to San Marco Square, so we spent 2 mornings sightseeing and the rest of the time relaxing at the pool. Perfect mix. The hotel is lovely and our room was perfect. A very large room with a king bed and 2 comfortable rollaway so for the kids. The staff was friendly, helpful and very accommodating especially Alessandro and the concierge desk. The only tiny negative is the hair dryer in the room. I didn't go to the gym but it looked very nice! I would highly recommend this hotel.
