We stayed there at the end of the season, amenities looked "well worn" but that it could be a beautiful hotel in the height of the season. Rooms were old, but clean. Staying here, we felt like we were transported back in time.

We had booked the Hotel des Bains but because it was near the end of the season it had closed so we were transferred to its sister hotel the Excelsior. We had booked the Lido because having visited Venice before we wanted a different experience and a half decent hotel in Venice itself was a crazy price. We arrived in Venice from Verona on the train and a Number 1 Vaporetto took us to the Lido (the vaporetti are far mote expensive than I remember at 6.5 euros for a single journey!) We took a 4 minute taxi from the Lido stop to the hotel which cost 10 euros. On arrival, the front of the hotel looks nothing special as it is on a road with not a lot around it - the beach is at the back. The entrance area is impressive and the staff efficient. We were upgraded to a Deluxe room which was a good start. On entering the room we were wowed as it was very large, decorated stylishly in a Moorish style with fabric walls and doors leading to two small balconies from whic h you could see the sea. We spent more time than we normally would in the room as it was so relaxing and a pleasure to be in. The bathroom was also spacious and had a good range of toiletries. The whole room was spotless with an armchair and two other comfortable chairs around a table. It had the largest bed I have come across in any hotel. There was a large amount of strorage space and it felt quality and was well insulated from all outside noise and other guests. We left the window open the first night and in came a fews mosquitoes. We mentioned this to the Concierge who had the room sprayed and then installed a mosquito plug that solved the problem. Even though you are on the Lido it is a very easy transfer to St. Mark's Square. The free shuttle boat leaves on the half hour from the hotel and the hour back from St. Mark's Square to the Excelsior. You access the boat from the hotel itslef by going down the stairs in Reception and walking along a corridor to the landing stages. This is very opulent and so convenient. The boat is fairly large and accommodates about 30 people a time and in the summer the boats are more frequent. The journey takes about 15 minutes by day and 10 minutes at night. We didn't eat on the Lido as most of the restaurants near the hotel were closed as it was the end of the season. We found some good restaurants in Venice itself in the side streets which were fascinating in themselves. The weather in late October was warm in the day if you were in the sun but chilly in the side streets which are mainly in the shadow. Early morning and from 3pm onwards it chilled down considerably but we were blessed wth cloudless skies for the time we were there. Breakfasts in the hotel were good with an excellent range of fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurts, croissants etc. There was a large selection of Italian meats, smoked salmon, cheeses etc and it you want hot there is a selection of sausage, bacon, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and scrambled egg. We stayed with the fruit and cold buffet which was more appetising. A bonus was to start the day with a glass or two of Prosseco which was part of the daily breakfast and in fairness, even though the breakfasts were OK they set us up for the day until an evening meal. We felt that the Lido, because of the shuttle boat was an excellent option to see Venice and escape from the noise and crowds of the city itself . If you get a good price, the Excelsior is a good option.
The hotel is very big and it was quiet during our stay so we had great value for money and it would be on my list of considerations should we return to Venice. Venice is a romantic city with a surprise around every corner and St. Mark;'s Sqaure by day or night is a delight with the musicians playing and the sheer grandeur of St. Mark's Cathedral and the Doge Palace. The city was clearly expecting floods in the coming week or so as the boards were already in position but we were fortunate that we saw it in blue skies complemented by an excellent hotel which encompassed wonderful free rides across the lagoon without the need to be squashed on a vaporetto. A great expeience.

Upon my arrival to the Westin Excelsior I was impressed! As my husband and I arrived in the boat taxi and I said WOW! This is great! We arrived at the front desk for check-in and the clerk (Franchesca) was very cold and stiff. We had booked the Grand Deluxe Sweet. Our luggage was taken to our room only to our dismay when we entered the room we were hit with the horrible smell of smoke! (We are non-smokers) We went back to the front desk to change our room by the very cold and stiff Franchesca was given another room. But this time it was not the deluxe room we had booked, but a smaller standard room with twin beds! We went back once again to see STIFF and COLD FRANCHESCA only to be told she had no other rooms available. We stayed 3 days and 4 nights and STIFF and COLD FRANCHESCA never changed our room. We also asked to speak to the mgr. on site and was told she was " to busy". Not sure why we were treated this way, but we were, we have a idea but I won't say. I loved the old school flavor of the hotel, the island where it is located on and I would come back (after COLD and STIFF FRANCHESCA) is gone.

We booked this for a long weekend for our first anniversary. On arrival we got a free upgrade to a HUGE sea view room on the fifth floor and after mentioning our anniversary a complimentary bottle of bubbly and fruit basket arrived at our door (NB each room has is own doorbell - a feature I'd not seen before).
Service was great at all times and the buffet breakfasts are wonderful - a huge range of cereals, fruits, breads etc.
The free hourly shuttle to and from St Mark's Square is extremely useful and a feature we made regular use of.
However, the price of anything not included in your room rate is a bit staggering. The minibar price list includes bottles of water at 5 Euros and small Pringles at 8.50. The restaurant/bar prices are similarly high. In the 3 days we had 4 teas/coffees between us at a cost of 21 Euros. Needless to say we ate out a lot.

The quiet beach is lovely, although the sand is more like builder's sand than some of the fine white sand you might expect.

The checkout time of 12:00 is a welcome change if you're used to UK checkouts of 10am.

Tips:
To get there, take the water taxi (Blue or Red Route) (13 Euros) from the airport to Lido and get a taxi (12 Euros) for the last mile. If arriving by train, get the water bus to St Marco and then the hotel launch from outside the Hotel Danieli (look for the Ciga Hotels sign) which goes every hour on the hour.

The Excelsior is world famous for being the hotel for the Venice film festival. There is wonderful oppulent feel about the hotel, grand decor, you can just see all the film stars that have graced its halls.
However, it does lack that personal feel. Yes, it is big, and yes some staff are nice, but others are a bit snooty and a little 'off'. We experienced being sent from Concierge to reception and back again as their duties seem a little grey in definition. It does not help that the desks are ooposite in a big reception.
However, for seeing Venice and the fact that there is a superb free complimentary taxi service to and from San Marco (and via Mureno if required) is a big bonus. We used it regularily, takes about 20 minutes and is a great freebie.
The rooms are nice, I have seen better bathrooms in 5 star hotels, but they were clean and well furnished, and thge maid service was excellent.
It haslo has a fabulous beach and pool (cold!!).
The prices for drinks and food are way above anywhere else, it seems to be a standard thing now that hotels of this stature feel that 8 euro for a small beer is acceptable.
We just accepted it, but some may not, because you can afford such a hotel does not necessarily mean you should have to pay over the odds for such items.
Venice - there is no need to say what you should see, but the maxim go and get lost is a good one, do so, and you will never be bored.
Just by getting 'lost' we saw all teh things we wanted to see, the Rialto Bridge, the Grand Canal and so on.
It was hot, so standing in the long queues to get into the Doges or San Marco were a no-no.
The Hotel taxi pick up and drop is by the Bridge of Sighs at the Starwood quay.
Finally - taxis are an incrediblt expensive item. Hotel to Airport on the final day - 130 euro.
Flinch..you bet!!
