“My favorite place in the world!!!!!”
Reviewed 29 May 2010

I've been going tothe Excelsior now for 32 years every summer. It is really wonderful in everyway possible. Rooms are large and beautiful. Breakfast is great outside every morning. The beach is so nice to stay on during your days on the Lido. And the staff have always been great. It's my place to be in the summer. Thank you Excelsior. Can't wait to come back again in a few weeks!!!!

My wife and I made a last minute decision, having spent over 2 weeks in Italy, to extend our trip and went to Venice. We didn't have much time to plan and do our research...thank God for Trip Advisor! Knowing nothing about Venice, we found some incredible photos of The Excelsior Hotel in Lido. We got a good deal on the price-it isa very beautiful hotel on the Adriatic Coast, a beautiful private ferry ride away from San Marco Square, Beautiful! The hotel is spectacular, and the ease of getting to/from Venice is as easy as it can be. Nice to get away from the hordes of Venice, If you can get a deal you can afford at The Excelsior, go for it!

we loved the excelsior. our room was huge and had two balconies overlooking the beach. the closets were perfectly arranged so that one could store everything for a long stay. the breakfast buffet was delightful and varied during the course of the week. although the beach is not open in april we walked along the sand anyway. we were surprised to find many beautiful seashells which made a great souvenier. riding the hotel launch to the city was fun and convenient. we enjoyed meeting other guests of the hotel on the launch. walk around the neighborhood of the hotel to see the lovely homes on the lido. the staff was especially helpful to us in advising us to get home when volcanic ash caused the venice airport to be closed. their advice and help saved us time and annoyance and we were able to catch our flight from rome to ny as scheduled. if you want the vacation of a life-time this is the place

My visit to Venice was something extraordinary! My stay at the Westin was a beautiful surprise and everything was so enchanting! The service, the food, the suites. Everything was magnificent! I can't wait to go back again. The hotels' decor is in Murano glass and marble! For me it will be an unforgettable experience because that is where my husband proposed to me. He arranged a 15 minute show with fireworks right outside of the hotel. It was the only place in Venice that allowed Fireworks. Ilianna, the sales manager at the Westin made sure that our stay at the hotel was more than spectacular! I will remember my engagement more so than my wedding! That's how beautiful it was! Thank you everyone at the Westin Excelsior for making my visit to Venice so unforgettable!

Upon arrival to the hotel on our honeymoon stay we were upgraded to a partial sea-view room, .which was overall a nice room with a good size. the hotel itself was huge! however...very quiet and most of the times boring! you'd be lucky if you caught a glimpse of another soul besides the staff members. staff was somewhat helpful. be careful when ordering from the room service menu, make sure to clarify your order because if they don't understand english they will overcharge you! we ordered fries one night and the lady misunderstood, i ordered 1 plate she sent 2, which cost us 25 euros!!! that's almost $50 just on fries! they refused to take it back... :|
anyhow, the buffet breakfast was good, the food was good, had a nice selection...
the hotel had an outdoor pool, but they said it operates in june when the weather gets a bit better. also b/c of the weather no one used the beach..so if you go before june, good luck..there's not much to do! all u get is a nice view and a the very helpful watertaxi to st. mark's!

OVERALL - our stay was nice b/c venice itself is beautiful, aside from the expensive prices. although we stayed away from the mainland, the lido wasn't so bad. there's some things you can do, such as rent a four-wheeler, walk to the shops and restaurants, and if you go there during good warm weather, then you can also use the beach!
However, id go back to this hotel, probably just when they are busier and the weather's nice, so i could take advantage of the outdoor pool & beach!

We stayed there at the end of the season, amenities looked "well worn" but that it could be a beautiful hotel in the height of the season. Rooms were old, but clean. Staying here, we felt like we were transported back in time.

We had booked the Hotel des Bains but because it was near the end of the season it had closed so we were transferred to its sister hotel the Excelsior. We had booked the Lido because having visited Venice before we wanted a different experience and a half decent hotel in Venice itself was a crazy price. We arrived in Venice from Verona on the train and a Number 1 Vaporetto took us to the Lido (the vaporetti are far mote expensive than I remember at 6.5 euros for a single journey!) We took a 4 minute taxi from the Lido stop to the hotel which cost 10 euros. On arrival, the front of the hotel looks nothing special as it is on a road with not a lot around it - the beach is at the back. The entrance area is impressive and the staff efficient. We were upgraded to a Deluxe room which was a good start. On entering the room we were wowed as it was very large, decorated stylishly in a Moorish style with fabric walls and doors leading to two small balconies from whic h you could see the sea. We spent more time than we normally would in the room as it was so relaxing and a pleasure to be in. The bathroom was also spacious and had a good range of toiletries. The whole room was spotless with an armchair and two other comfortable chairs around a table. It had the largest bed I have come across in any hotel. There was a large amount of strorage space and it felt quality and was well insulated from all outside noise and other guests. We left the window open the first night and in came a fews mosquitoes. We mentioned this to the Concierge who had the room sprayed and then installed a mosquito plug that solved the problem. Even though you are on the Lido it is a very easy transfer to St. Mark's Square. The free shuttle boat leaves on the half hour from the hotel and the hour back from St. Mark's Square to the Excelsior. You access the boat from the hotel itslef by going down the stairs in Reception and walking along a corridor to the landing stages. This is very opulent and so convenient. The boat is fairly large and accommodates about 30 people a time and in the summer the boats are more frequent. The journey takes about 15 minutes by day and 10 minutes at night. We didn't eat on the Lido as most of the restaurants near the hotel were closed as it was the end of the season. We found some good restaurants in Venice itself in the side streets which were fascinating in themselves. The weather in late October was warm in the day if you were in the sun but chilly in the side streets which are mainly in the shadow. Early morning and from 3pm onwards it chilled down considerably but we were blessed wth cloudless skies for the time we were there. Breakfasts in the hotel were good with an excellent range of fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurts, croissants etc. There was a large selection of Italian meats, smoked salmon, cheeses etc and it you want hot there is a selection of sausage, bacon, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and scrambled egg. We stayed with the fruit and cold buffet which was more appetising. A bonus was to start the day with a glass or two of Prosseco which was part of the daily breakfast and in fairness, even though the breakfasts were OK they set us up for the day until an evening meal. We felt that the Lido, because of the shuttle boat was an excellent option to see Venice and escape from the noise and crowds of the city itself . If you get a good price, the Excelsior is a good option.
The hotel is very big and it was quiet during our stay so we had great value for money and it would be on my list of considerations should we return to Venice. Venice is a romantic city with a surprise around every corner and St. Mark;'s Sqaure by day or night is a delight with the musicians playing and the sheer grandeur of St. Mark's Cathedral and the Doge Palace. The city was clearly expecting floods in the coming week or so as the boards were already in position but we were fortunate that we saw it in blue skies complemented by an excellent hotel which encompassed wonderful free rides across the lagoon without the need to be squashed on a vaporetto. A great expeience.
