Despite a delayed Ryanair flight from Stansted and sub-zero temperatures, our 3 day holiday still proved most enjoyable. Treviso airport is some 20 kilometres from the main Venice Island - our 40 minute coach journey cost us 13 euros return. On arrival at Piazzale Roma Square, we then booked a 3 day Vaporetto (water bus) pass at the ACTV offices costing 33 euros - this enables you to hop-on-and-off throughout your stay and boats are the main and cheapest form of transport. One hour and 21 stops later, you arrive at Lido where Le Boulevard is a convenient 3 minute walk away.
The hotel itself is a fairly typical 4 star, recently modernised, and very comfortable. Our bedroom was small yet adequate bearing in mind our short stay, the en suite nicely tiled – the ground floor public rooms were a lot more stylish. Breakfast enables you to fuel up for the day - mainly Continental style, with scrambled egg (congealed if your timing is poor) and greasy streaky bacon - and beware because if you arrive late, some items run out and are not quickly replaced. Also, you need to know there is a safe deposit - found out about the charge when I handed back my keys! Lido itself is quiet and relaxing – most of the places to visit are on the main Venetian islands.
As to sights to see, apart from the obvious St. Mark's Basilica, we attended an evening recital at Doge's Palace, visited a superb travelling exhibition of Leonardo Da Vince's machines and went to the Ca' d'Oro gallery. Be careful of what you spend - cappuccino's can cost you 6 euros near St. Mark's Square but only 1 euro if you stand at the counter when you're not in the commercial sector. Similarly, there's plenty of fine glassware and jewellery to tempt you at top prices .... Gondola rides are also expensive at 80 euros for a 40 minute ride – we saved our money! We plan to revisit, in warmer weather, when the ice on the Grand Canal has become a distant memory.

The Good:
Location - Lido worked out perfectly. Plenty of vaporettos (buy the unlimited travel pass), quick travel to San Marco and other sites. Quiet island in the winter but plenty of places to eat/ shopping.
Breakfast - the best of the 3 hotels we stayed at in Italy. Abhorrent coffee but ok if mixed with hot chocolate. Scrambled eggs a plus!
Room - sparkling clean room and bathroom. Springiest beds of 3 hotels we stayed in.
Service - helpful and reliable front desk staff.

The Bad:
cluttered lobby, dingy hallways, needs updating.

The Ugly:
MOLD - yikes! Don't look up in the bathroom - the ceiling was spattered with black mold. More gross than anything else, but could be a particular problem for the severely allergic.

Good basic hotel to explore from

We also went on the Broadway Travel/Travelzoo deal, which was excellent value for money. However the Boulevard Hotel is definitely not what we would call 4 star. Our room was tiny, there was only just enough space to squeeze past the double bed. The bathroom was very nice, with a bidet and a proper bath, which was most welcome after a day of walking in freezing cold weather. It was also nice and warm in the room. The room and bathroom were kept very clean and the towels and sheets were changed daily, which was very good. Toiletries are replaced every day.

The breakfast was quite adequate and the overworked waiters tried their best to keep up with the constant stream of guests, but tables were left uncleared; the hot dishes were not replenished that swiftly and the fruit bowl was not topped up but disappeared when empty. There was no brown or wholemeal bread, or salad bits. I nearly caused a riot on our second morning by bringing in my own tomatoes which I had purchased from the BILLA supermarket next door (very handy). People were constantly coming up to me and asking where I got the tomatoes from!

There are good value restaurants with excellent pizzas as well and proper meals if you turn left out of the hotel and head away from the boat terminal. There is also a good restaurant opposite.

The reception staff were indifferent and did not go out of their way to answer questions or volunteer information. They were very matter-of-fact. We were all made to wait until 2.00pm before being allowed to check-in and were then moaned at for wanting our rooms at 2.00pm on the dot. Maybe that is why they put us in such a tiny room!

The whole place is a bit musty and the walls were very marked and the furniture well used and dirty. It could all do with a fresh coat of paint at the very least. The electric cables in our room were rather dodgy and the mirror inside the wardrobe had been broken at the top and sticky-taped back together! The small flat-screen TV did have BBC World News and CNN in English, but it certainly was not a 4 star room.

Overall, and depending on how good a deal you can get it was fine, but don't expect luxury.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the courtyard are quiet

Pros

Clean Tidy Hotel, bit dated but comfortable and friendly
Good location - one minutes walk from water bus
Couple of decent priced restaurants close by

Negatives

It is on Lido so that you have to get water bus to main island (takes 15 minutes) however price you should pay reflects this and the water bus is part of the fun of Venice.
Breakfast is OK however seem short staffed so room does not cleared and food does not get refreshed as fast as it should. Don't leave it to last minute as there will be none left.
BIG WARNING - do not use Credit Card to make overseas calls as advertised in rooms. I tried , could not make a call and they tried (the phone company) to charge me £39 - luckily my credit card company blocked it. Use the reception if you want long distance.

Summary:

Is it value for money - yes
Would I stay there again - yes
Is it suitable for everyone -yes only if you don't mind the water bus.

Room Tip: We were on third floor, room was quiet large by european standards.

Pros: convenient in summer, good staff, good breakfast, rooms are decently sized

Cons: needs a serious cleaning, much of Lido is closed in the winter

One block from the vaporetto station, it takes 15 minutes to get to St Marks on the #1 boat which runs quite frequently up the grand canal. The staff was very helpful with excursion tickets and restaurant reservations. Breakfast was good and varied, with a mix of Continental and American favorites. That said there is no restaurant in the hotel for other meals. The hotel does have a few years' worth of marks on the walls and really needs a good cleaning and paint. If you don't mind being out of central Venice and the weather is warm, it's a solid choice for budget travelers.
