“A great friendly family run hotel”
Reviewed 13 June 2014

My husband and I have just returned from a four night stay at the Sorriso Hotel. We booked this by e-mail in October after reading all the reviews. We are always apprehensive when we arrive at any accommodation after having stayed in some real dives in Australia, Canada, Europe and the USA. We have nothing but good to say about this hotel starting with the communication by e-mail to Piero – the Reception co-ordinator which included detailed directions to reach the hotel. On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by the owner Caterina with whom I had spoken on the phone a few weeks earlier to confirm our booking. Both Caterina and Piero’s command of the English language is excellent. We had requested a quiet room with a sea view and a powerful shower all of which we were given. We also had a view of a riding school which was an added bonus. The room - 306 was immaculately clean and bright. It was well furnished and it was nice to have coat hangers in the wardrobe. Someone previously mentioned that there was no mirror in the bedroom but the large lit mirror in the bathroom was perfectly adequate. We were provided with two lovely thick, soft white bath towels, two hand towels and two face towels which were changed twice during our stay. We were also provided with shower gel and soap which again was replaced twice. The shower was certainly powerful and a joy to use. I have read different views of the breakfast but we couldn’t fault it. Yes there was not a tremendous selection but who would not be happy with a choice of two fruit juices, a selection of yogurts, soft cheeses, and cold ham, three cereals, one of which was muesli, jams, chocolate spread and honey. There was also Melba toast and another kind of crisp bread, sliced crusty bread, crusty rolls, croissants and fruit muffins. Freshly made coffee with warm frothy milk to allow you to make cappuccino - the coffee and milk was constantly been topped up as were the bread and croissants. There was also a selection of teas. Yes the waitresses did not walk around with a constant smile on their faces but they did smile and acknowledge if you spoke and smiled to them (who can smile all the time). Caterina has a dog Zumo with whom I tried to make friends with but he was very shy, Caterina seeing that I wanted to befriend him gave me a dog biscuit to give to him. I was so pleased when he took it from me and allowed me to pet him and when we left this morning he came with Caterina to let me say bye to him – made my morning. Getting around from the hotel was no problem. We walked to the ferry a few times and it only took 30 minutes but the bus service is excellent and not expensive – taking only 5-10 minutes to get from the hotel to the ferry. There is a well stocked Coop about a ten minute walk from the hotel. We asked if we could borrow a knife and were given not only a knife but a plate and a couple of napkins from Piero. As there was no safe in the room Caterina put our valuables in the hotel safe. As we were leaving early this morning Caterina kindly arranged for us to have breakfast at 7.30 a.m. and Piero set up an automated alarm call for us. As for paying our bill we could have paid it when we arrived but agreed with Caterina that we would pay it last night. Finally we don’t know where the two star rating comes from as we think it should be at least three stars. Thanks again Caterina, Piero and staff and Zumo for helping to make our holiday complete.

Room Tip: Room 306 is spacious and has excellent views

A very friendly efficiently run hotel which provides a good level of accommodation and service. An efficient local bus service which operates 24 hours a day gets you to the water bus ferry in less than 10 minutes. Breakfast is fairly basic but quite acceptable for the price. I have absolutely no complaints and would recommend it to anyone not keen on high Venice prices.

Nearby suggestions:
- The bakery on the corner was our favourite across Italy
- Roxy (eatery) near the vaporetto stop was wonderful

After enjoying the frantic pace of Rome and Florence we decided to stay here for our time in Venice. They provided us with friendly service, a large marble room, a modern bathroom (with a tub!), a balcony that overlooked the lagoon and a short walk to the beach, nice dining area and a very fresh, tasty breakfast, all at a very fair price. With this being said, it is criminal to call it a 2 star, as we enjoyed it far more then our 4 star in Rome. Upon check in we were giving great tips in regards to Venice (where it's best to catch the sunset, markets, help with the vaporetto lines, etc.) and upon checkout we had luggage issues and had to leave a broken bag behind which was no problem at all. Not all the service speaks English (expect less English on Lido in general which added to a more authentic experience), but were always glad to find someone who did. It had no safe, but you could lock the wardrobe and we never felt as though our items were ever unsafe. They have a dog, she was very shy, but sweet.
A 1 minute walk away from catching the sunset on the lagoon, a 15 minute vaporetto ride to San Marco square, 35 min ride to the railway (5.1 or 5.2) or you can spend an hour on route 1 which will show you the lagoon and take you through the grand canal, making all stops (train and airport included). Upon Lido the hotel is a 5 minute bus ride (which is included in your vaporetto pass, any bus leaving the vaporetto stop will work) or a nice 20 min walk.
The vaporetto runs all night long, so no concern on getting stuck on Venice and not making it back to your room.
Grazie Mille!

We were glad to have chosen Hotel Sorriso - it's an hour's water taxi ride from Marco Polo Airport and away from the mania of Venice city centre. Getting around was easy, there are three buses that will take you from the hotel down to the main Lido area, public beach and water taxi stop.

The receptionists were probably the biggest let down of this hotel. We had to ask three times for extra pillows, she eventually turned up at our door, thrust them into our hands without so much as eye contact. Not great.

I also had a bit of an issue paying for our room. I was more than happy to do it when we first arrived but the receptionist said to do it another time. We tried again a couple of days later and were told the card machine wasn't working. Made it clear we'd be leaving early on our final day so would have to pay it the night before at the latest. Every time we tried to pay after that she acted like there was no rush - "go for breakfast and then do it." We just wanted to get it paid.

There was also a large dog with a bark that was just as big hanging around the reception area. I'm not a fan of dogs anyway and found it quite threatening.

Overall this is a decent, clean hotel. On closer inspection you can tell why it's only a 2-star - no hooks in the bathroom, mirror in the bedroom or waste paper basket. However, if you want a place to stay that's out of Venice, this would be a good option.

We have just returned from the Hotel Sorriso in Lido, 15 mins from the mainland by water taxi.
as mentioned by previous guests, we were given full instructions on how to reach the hotel. The instructions also included purchasing our waterbus tickets (booking in the UK prior to leaving'). Definately use Actv. The journey was hassle-free and on arrival we were met by a very pleasant English speaking receptionist who immediately gave us instructions on how to travel to and from the hotel. He advised us of where we could go for the afternoon, to make use of the time we had until dinner. We were directed to a lovely bar on the beach which again had lovely staff. The beach at present, is being rebuilt. Sand being moved to form a new beach for the summer. However we would not have gone swimming anyway due to the temperature. I am sure that this work will have ceased in a few weeks time. The surrounding area closeby the hotel is clean and has a number of local shops and bars. You can walk to the Vaporreto via the back road which runs alongside the canal We did this. the sun is setting around 8.30 at the moment and this was a pleasurable experience as the walk overlooks Venice itself (See photos). The sunset is amazing and I would thoroughly recommend this walk at least once during your stay.(see photos). The Vaporretto "Bus" is serviced by the number A, B or C, from just outside the hotel if you prefer not to travel by foot. This runs every 10 mins during the day and there is a "N" service that runs every 20 mins during the night - all through the night. This means you would not have to leave Venice early. The Sorriso hotel itself was clean, tidy and had maid service every day. It has recently been updated and we had not quarms about anything. It is basic, as is the breakfast. selection of teas/coffee, Cereals, yoghurts, cheese, ham and fresh croissants each morning. Don't expect "full English". This hotel is ideal if wanting to stay in a quieter area, away fromt he hussle/bustle of Venice.
The Vapporetto takes approx. 1 hour to travel down the canal and reach Lido (Bus no. 1). From Lido to the first stop in Venice, is 8 mins, so Lido is not too far. The main part of Lido (just opposite the Vapporetta main stop is full of shops selling various clothing/supermarket (well stocked) and also had an array of restaurants. it is a very pretty area serviced throughout by land buses. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did.

We emailed asking for directions - which really helped us.
The receptionist spoke English (better than our limited Italian) and even remembered it was our birthdays. They suggested various restaurants for us to try and which vaporreti lines would get us to the attractions we wanted to see.
The room was clean, the bed good and the area quiet. The breakfasts were better than we expected from a 2 star.
As we had to check our really early, due to our flight time, we were given a packed breakfast the evening before.
We would definitely book again!

Had 5 nights at this Hotel, after the crowded central Venice the Lido is a peaceful haven to relax away from the maddening crowds ! Hotel Sorriso situated 5 bus stops from the vaporetto landing, the bus leaves immediately outside this landing, exit the bus at the roundabout and turn right into Via Colombo 40 yards and you are at the Hotel. My room was large by Ventian standards, recently refurbished, electric window shutters and a silent efficient central heating system kept the room cool. The shower was on the small size , but I understand some rooms had bath with showers ? The bed was very comfortable and and sheets changed twice . Breakfast was simple but adequate, I used to make sandwiches and take a large excellent coffee to my room and had breakfast on a sunny balcony, not that the dining room was busy because there was always more vacant tables than occupied one.
The beautiful beach was 5 minutes away, which after a late afternoon of sightseeing and gallery visiting was so relaxing, I was led to believe after reading reviews that the Hotel provided free sunbed vouchers, the beach attendants tried to charge me 20 euros but I said the Hotel vouchers entitled me to free usage, only when I said I was staying at their restaurant for lunch did they accepted the vouchers, I was surprised on departure from the Hotel to be charged 10 euros for each of the 3 days I visited the beach, but the vouchers were for the day, so I suppose it was a fair price to pay for such a super clean beach with excellent hot shower facilities, etc.
The area is quiet at night , but head for the main strip Ave Elizabeth and theres everything you need for wining and dining,
This Hotel is a great Budget priced Hotel and would definitely stay there again, lest I forget the staff were all really friendly and most helpful all the time I was there. I didn,t manage to obtain free wifi as I thought the brochure said it was to be charged, but I did get free wifi at he restaurant on the beach. All in all a great choice, no mozzies at all !Don't let the location on the Lido put you off, its worth a small bus ride, and theres an abundance of buses. Laurie
