Service was okay - nothing special. Place is kind of run down. Buffet looked "bleh" and the dishes sitting out for it were none to clean. Ordered a sandwich and chips. Chips were really good - the sandwich was big but just mediocre. How can you mess up a BLT? A better choice would have been the fast food restaurants that are very close by. At least their food is generally a "known" quality.

I am from Utah and we used to have Frontier Pie restaurants but they have all closed. While in Pocatello we decided to make the 1/2 hour trip and take a nostalgic trip to Frontier Pies in Idaho Falls.

The restaurant is located inside a truck stop, which was different. But it still looked like the old familiar Frontier Pies I was used to, with its covered wagon tables and big salad bar. They even serve the drinks in enormous canning jar glasses! It was like a trip back in time.

We both had the Longhorn Tips (steak tips, onions, green peppers and red potatoes marinated and grilled, served with campfire beans and texas toast). It was phenomenal!! The beans were thick and just sweet enough. The steak was tender and the marinade was really good. All in all it was an excellent meal. We did get an order of cornbread because what's a trip to Frontier Pies without cornbread? It was as we remembered it. Sweet, moist and served with honey butter. We got pie slices to go (coconut cream, excellent) and took an apple pie home. The apple pie is hands down the best apple pie I have ever eaten next to homemade.

We will most definitely be going back if we're in the area again! Just wish they still had locations in Utah.

My parents, my husband and I were in town (in Idaho falls) for some business. On our way back out of town we stopped for lunch right before we got back on the interstate we visited the one in the DAD'S truck stop. Anyhow we were excited as we had had wonderful experiences in the past at resturaunts down here in Utah. We were real disappointed to say the least. We went in there and there were hardly any other people in the resturaunt., Our waitress had the persona and feeling and attitude as to she didn't know her product knowledge or did not know what she was doing and real unsure of herself and abilities. Every and any question we asked he was real hesitant, did not act like she knew the answers and like she was just going thru the motions, and she had to think about everything and all her answers before she answered. Even simple questions like "What kind of products (coke or pepsi) do you offer? shouldn't a waitress know that? he/or she should not have to think about it! and just other basic questions a waiter/waitress should know. I observed this and watched this with her customers. She don't seem to know her stuff. Secondly THE FOOD!!! my mother's order had burnt toast (as she ordered the hot roast beef sandwich) my dad's meal was the liver and onions and part of it was BURNT, my husbands Nacho's tasted flat and LIKE CRAP and I had taco salad and when the little container of salsa originally came out it had tipped over and was spilling on the plate and table. And when mentioned these issues to a manager he was like "well that is how we bring out the salsa!" really? you bring it out with a sloppy presentation? and if that is the case then there is a definite problem. The waitress did not even clean up the salsa that had spilled., She just put the plate on top to cover the mess and then before any of the food was brought out the waitress "Dinked around" and "Sat on our ticket!" for at least 20 minutes before she even entered anything into the computer. So when we mentioned how long we waited to even get our food to the manager he all called us a liar and said "Well the ticket didn't come in till 3:05 PM so you haven't or didn't wait quite a 1/2 hour (or as long as you stated) and he is saying this at around 3:45 PM well our order actually was taken around 2:45 PM - so the manager needs improvement on his bedside manner and not pretty much or ever come off to a customer and come off to them like they were lying when we weren't. really did not seem to care. However he did make some adjustments but, he could have did more. For example maybe send us home with a free pie or slices of pie @ no charge. Just some thoughts. After we told the waitress we wanted to speak to a manager after she went and got him she purposely avoided us and wanted nothing to do with us anymore. She couldn't even get us a dang to go container which we asked for. She was "hanging out" behind and in the area where you get the drinks and then walked off into another room leaving me hanging and refused to get a to go container. It took another waitress to do what she should have done.

Everyone is nice that works there, but there is nothing really special about this place. On the plus side, it is never busy so you never have to wait to be seated.
