My husband and I stayed recently at the Knob Hill Inn on a driving tour through Idaho. Having made last minute reservations we were surprised that this hotel had rooms available, but we were so glad they did! The Inn is situated at the very north end of town, tucked in amid beautifully landscaped grounds. The exterior exudes Swiss chalet charm, with wrap-around wood balconies festooned with bright flowerboxes. Located in an adjacent building is a small pool and Jacuzzi. The inside is painted a tranquil blue, and archways open onto a patio with comfortable lounge chairs and umbrellas. On the north side of the building, next to the lovely flower gardens (featuring a small pond with a waterfall), a larger, covered patio opens off the restaurant & bar, a popular spot on weekend nights. The front entrance is through an elegant, leaded glass doorway located under the massive, sloping portico. Inside the lobby, the décor is surprisingly modern - all dark wood, slate floors, and polished glass. The front desk staff is very efficient, friendly and helpful, and after a surprisingly easy and informal check-in ("describe your car-make, model, color" - instead of having to know your plate number) we were offered a fresh baked cookie and some lemon water, and given a brief tour.
Our room (220) was on the second floor at the end of the hallway, with a superb view of Bald Mountain's ski runs. Although there were none of the rooms with wood-burning fireplaces available at the time we visited, the view compensated for it. The room was also modern and furnished with simple, elegant furniture in neutral tones. French doors lead out to the balcony, and the desk clerk immediately noted that we had no table and chairs outside our room so she called for someone to bring some up. Before we had unloaded our luggage they were already in place. Although there didn't seem to be any air conditioning controls (Ketchum rarely gets hot enough to need A/C) there was a ceiling fan and a large, portable floor fan. The bed was comfortable and there was a large closet. The bath was well designed, with a large vanity, separate toilet room (always appreciated!), an oversized soaking tub and separate marble shower. An assortment of imported French toiletries and soap was provided, along with plush lined bathrobes. There was also a big flat screen TV with cable, but then we hardly ever turn on the TV when we travel - it seems like such a waste of time when there is so much to see and do outside!
The Inn has a full service bar and upscale restaurant. There is also an exercise room and a small conference room for meetings. Breakfast is served from 7:30-10:00 a.m. and is reason alone for staying here. Served in a separate breakfast room, serenely decorated in muted tones of gray (with computer tablets provided for guests to read the morning news), is a sumptuous repast of pastries, fresh fruit, bagels, muffins, toast, yogurt, granola, hard boiled eggs, bacon, ham, juice/coffee/tea, and individual baked egg/sausage casseroles. The staff buzzes around refilling everything so that it is always fresh. Special diets are accommodated, and a staffer quickly whipped up a plate of scrambled eggs at a guest's request. The highlight, though, was the ingenious pancake machine - simply press a button, and in only a minute or so, out slide one or two deliciously light pancakes - right onto your plate.
Especially notable at Knob Hill Inn is the service - first time guests are treated as if they were longtime friends and you feel at home as soon as you arrive and get settled in. The staff is speedy, friendly and efficient. Omnipresent, yet unobtrusive, they seem to be everywhere, making sure things are perfect for their guests. Requests are handled immediately. Little extras like valet parking and turndown service are unexpected pleasures, and everything is immaculately clean.
The Inn is large enough to feel luxurious but small enough to feel intimate and romantic. I would highly recommend it for a honeymoon, anniversary, or anytime couple's getaway. It is probably less suited for families with small children. The upper floors are accessible by elevator or stairs.
