Fine dining , what does that mean to you ? It may conjure up an image of people dressed up in suits and gowns seated at an impeccably set dinner table with fabric tablecloths and fancy folded napkins, sparkling wine glasses and water goblets. A myriad of different silver forks, spoons and knives, stacks of assorted plates and a fancy centerpiece. Food and beverage servers at your beck and call. Most importantly a memorable meal served course by course will delight not only your palate but also be visually stimulating. This is a dinner you don’t scarf down in a few minutes, it will allow you time to savor each presentation as it is served. Getting dressed up and going out for an unrushed quality dinner served in four courses should make you feel relaxed and special.
If you have ever had such a meal you know what I am talking about and if you have never had such a meal you are in luck. Our little town of Lava Hot Springs can provide this quality of fine dining.
The Greystone Manor Dinner Experience meets all the criteria for an evening of fine dining. Vicky Lyon provides elegant meals by reservation and she has special events like Valentine’s Day dinners or New Years Eve dinners.
The atmosphere in the Greystone is inviting and usually decorated according to the season. Some special events will have a musician for background dinner music.
You call ahead to make your reservation and that is also when you choose the dinner selection for the evening. A dinner for two will run about $75 depending on the selection.
When you arrive at the Greystone you will be seated at an elegantly set table and asked about your choice of beverages. As you look at the table and begin your meal you start notice the little details, because it is the little details that are the art in fine dining. Things like the slice of lemon in your water goblet or a few olives on a tiny plate to cleanse your palate and aid digestion. The first course may be a shrimp cocktail with a slice of lemon. The shrimp are fanned out beautifully but the red edge of the lemon wedge where it was dipped in paprika makes it special. The waitperson will be there as you finish the first course then serve the next course, probably a salad. Our salad was hearts of romaine artistically laid out like a wreath and smothered in fresh grated parmesan cheese and bright red cherry tomatoes.
The appetizer fork and salad fork have now disappeared as you work your way to the dinner fork and the next course. When you start to butter a roll you notice even the butter has been detailed with little scalloped edges. The main course will be served next. It will come with a meat, vegetables and potatoes. We had a New York steak cooked to perfection, a tasty vegetable medley including asparagus in a fantastic sauce and Idaho mashed potatoes blended with chunks of delicious lobster. You might ask about the mini ravioli’s smothered in a brown sugar walnut sauce that is scrumptious.
Our desert was a delightful pirouline cookie and crème brulee , a delicious cup of creamy custard with a caramelized sugar top. It was the perfect finish to a great dining experience.
The leftovers ( not much ) were packaged in a tin foil swan, much more artistic than in a Styrofoam box.
