“Consistent Value in a Unique Atmosphere over the Long Haul”

The Canteen is an institution in Barrington. Known mainly for its legendary breakfasts and businessmen's lunches, savory food is served in a Quonset hut decorated with aviation memorabilia. Our nephew took his family there for breakfast while visiting from out of town and raved about the ham & eggs. Based on his recommendation, my wife and I took his dad there with mixed reviews. Food was hot and served with enthusiasm, but our party found the eggs, hash browns and ham overly spiced, and the pancakes very heavy. Portions were huge, most notably the ham. An evening meal at home could be built around what you take home in a doggy bag! Worth a try if you like heavily-spiced, primitive, home-cooked fare. No way I could call this restaurant average!

sunday breakfast -- lunch when playing hooky from work -- cup of coffee and pie just for fun. All those light(er) meals are well within the wheelhouse of this barrington staple. The decor has to be called whimsical and certainly fits with the family feel. They also have ribs and other specials of which I have yet to partake.

Great place for breakfast as food is excellent and they have a great reputation for dinner, but I have not yet gone for dinner. Small but very good food.

Great casual Greek breakfast diner with fast service, great food, large portions that keep us coming back. The owner is very friendly and he likes to make his was around the restaurant to see if you’re enjoying your mean.

I came into this place on a whim 7 years ago and have been coming back ever since. You walk in and are greeted by Sam or George who never forget faces and are incredibly friendly and outgoing. The decor is reminiscent of a WWII hangar with kids coloring pages proudly hung on the wall. The food is the real reason you are here. The breakfast selection is amazing with the best potatoes you have ever tried. Bacon is cooked to perfection and I am very picky about this. I love coming back here again and again!
