The Canteen is an institution in Barrington. Known mainly for its legendary breakfasts and businessmen's lunches, savory food is served in a Quonset hut decorated with aviation memorabilia. Our nephew took his family there for breakfast while visiting from out of town and raved about the ham & eggs. Based on his recommendation, my wife and I took his dad there with mixed reviews. Food was hot and served with enthusiasm, but our party found the eggs, hash browns and ham overly spiced, and the pancakes very heavy. Portions were huge, most notably the ham. An evening meal at home could be built around what you take home in a doggy bag! Worth a try if you like heavily-spiced, primitive, home-cooked fare. No way I could call this restaurant average!
