“Beautiful and understated”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 December 2013

My husband surprised me with 4 nights at Thala Beach Lodge for our anniversary and we loved it. It was quiet, private and peaceful. There are so many spots to get away from the world, fabulous views, and we loved the whole reception/lobby area, permanently open to the air and the jungle views and wildlife. The staff were all friendly and helpful, good coffee (!). One thing that really stood out for me was the absence of 'rules'. So many places are plastered with signs saying 'don't do this, don't do that', 'only do this between the hours of...', and Thala isn't. Understated, confident enough in the product not be be flashy, and very special.

Your first impression of the place is “Wow”! That “wow” factor stays with you, as you explore the place over your welcome drink. The service is outstanding all the staff are so friendly and accommodating thank you all! Love the valet parking.
The cabins are private and in excellent condition.
It was our weekend getaway, and on our last day the lodge was very accommodating and they let us have a late checkout.Thank you Thala! We greatly appreciated this especially since our flight wasn’t till late afternoon.

This is an incredibly special place! So beautifully designed to nestle into its magnificent setting, with many places both in the lodge and on the grounds to experience stunning ocean views, beautiful tropical foliage, the magnificent beach, and wonderful serenity. The rooms are extremely attractive, peaceful and comfortable. Some have fabulous views, and the rainforest rooms also have a special appeal. We were enthralled with the open air dining room and found both the food and service excellent. Watching the lorikeets as we ate leisurely and delicious breakfasts is a memory we’ll treasure!

Thala’s staff is extremely welcoming and helpful. They seem to share a passion for the lodge that is both unique and delightful! We felt very at home and would have loved to stay much longer!

Management is top-notch, responding immediately to queries and requests, making bookings and suggestions. The shuttle made it easy to go to Port Douglas (we had no car), and tours pick up regularly at the lodge. One of our favorite days however, was when we stayed at the lodge all day enjoying the Nature Walk with David (fascinating), the pools, beach and a fabulous seafood picnic dinner. The talk and didgeridoo performance given by the Aboriginal elders was also a very special experience.

Thanks to the each staff member who helped make this our favorite accommodation in Australia. We would return in a heartbeat and cannot recommend Thala Beach Lodge more highly. Wish we weren't so far away!

I stayed here with family and loved the beautiful location away from the busyness of Port Douglas. The rooms give a great feeling of privacy and were well designed. The staff were excellent, the pools and the beach were lovely and the bar/lounge area adjacent to the dining area was perfect. My only issue was how hilly it was which made moving from the beach to our room and back to the main building very difficult for me. It was possible to phone reception to get picked up and delivered to where I wanted to go so they do endeavour to help, but I prefer to get around on my own steam.
We felt the restaurant was expensive for what it was and ate mostly in Port Douglas. We did have an excellent lunch from the bar menu - the best of all worlds as we could eat in the more comfortable lounge area. We had hired a car in Cairns which proved essential for getting around. This isn't the type of resort where you never have to leave for activities so a car is needed.

We spent 4 nights here and it was magnificent! The property was so beautiful and well-maintained. We typically are the people who stay in high-end hotels and resorts, but decided to stay at this place because it was something different and our travel agent highly recommended it.

We were not disappointed. Although the rooms were not high-end and luxurious, each bungalow was spacious, extremely clean and well-maintained. There was absolute privacy and it was so peaceful. It was a true retreat tucked into nature's beauty. The views at any angle were spectacular and we saw so many neat birds, frogs, butterflies, etc. I was a little nervous before arrival of what the bugs/insects were like, but like anywhere in Port Douglas, you were fine if you sprayed yourself with bug spray. We did not have a single insect in our bungalow despite the fact that it was raining so much the week we were there.

It was nice to have all of the bungalows spread out amongst the property, however, some of the paths were uphill and difficult to walk up to get to the main building that had the restaurant. After some intense hikes and activities in Port Douglas, it made it difficult (and exhausting) to get dinner or even breakfast at times. There was a convenient golf cart that you could call the front desk to send for you to get around, and we took advantage of that.

The staff at Thala was extremely accommodating and ensured that their guests were comfortable and all their needs were taken care of. They were extremely friendly, helpful and sincere. They went out of their way to take care of their guests and it was such a breath of fresh air to receive service like that.

The only complaint we had was that the restaurant was not cheap and that there was only restaurant on the property. Further, because of the unique and secluded location of Thala, there were no nearby options unless you had a car.

Our stay at Thala made our trip to Port Douglas all the more special. Would we stay there again? DEFINITELY!!!

My partner and I stayed at Thala Beach Lodge in October and absolutely loved it. Every detail was perfect, starting with our first walk into the reception area, the friendly and helpful service, and the breathtaking panoramic views from the lodge area. Our little chalet was private and beautiful. We really enjoyed the walkways around the hotel grounds, the cute little beach shack for sunset drinks and walking along the private Oak Beach. It's a 20 minute drive south of Port Douglas so having a car is really helpful. Hotel food is nice but a bit expensive. Drive into Port Douglas and eat at the delicious Salsa Bar and Grill. We will be back!

Room Tip: We stayed in a jungle room which was slightly away from the other ones and really lovely. No ocean v...

For an eco experience without green wash or cutting of necessities, Thala Beach Lodge is a must do for either a meal/afternoon tea visit or to stay. The staff, the ambience, the wild-life, botany and the rooms, each wrap their eco brand around guests to let you know you are in tropical and natural heaven. The private beach, the bush walks and the local food immaculately presented are the draw cards to this magnificent piece of private and upmarket Far North QLD villa stays. All timber, the tree house lounge overlooking the Coral Sea is the BEST place for an indulgent afternoon tea at a shockingly affordable price ($18.50). The open air dining room also overlooks the Coral Sea to the north and local birds are the only thing to obscure your view. The timber villa accommodation scattered through out the forest leading to beaches is divine - HUGE bed and plenty of space. We will be back again and again and again.

Room Tip: Ask for either forest views or ocean views.
