We weren't supposed to be staying here - we were supposed to be at their sister hotel the Hotel Ork, which is of a higher standard, but ebookers messed up and they hadn't booked us a room, even though they confirmed 4 days before my departure that they had! The Hotel Ork sent us to the Hlid as they had a room for our two night stay.
The hotel owners were lovely and very helpful - after we explained our story to them the first thing they said was that we could relax now and not to worry. Also when there were issues with ebookers about who was paying for the hotel, they were adament we shouldn't pay them, which was very kind but not right, but thankfully ebookers sorted out the payment on the morning we departed. They also let me use their phone to call ebookers and then their pc to send the email ebookers requested.
The room was fine, though it was disappointing that both beds had torn sheets. You could here people walking up and down the corridors, but that was more to a noisy family not being very considerate. This seems to be an icelandic thing, but there was only one very thin pillow, so we both had to use towels to prop them up. The beds were quite soft (my friend loved that, but I like it harder) and the quilts were nice and warm.
There were tea and coffee facilities in the breakfast / dining area and these could be used at any time, so we enjoyed a cup of tea after our days out. My friend is a smoker and loved sitting outside the front door, sheltered from the wind, at a wooden picnic table, enjoying the views. In fact, it was that nice, I sat out there with her too.
This is a basic hotel and has no facilities like the Ork does (though I think you maybe able to use there's??), but we felt it was a good base to explore the area from..
The Hlid is on a lovely quiet road and the views were beautiful, probably much better than the Ork as they are of the open countryside and not the town.
The Hlid does do evening meals but you need to tell them in the morning that you will be eating in and there is no menu.
One point to note is this hotel is not in Selfross - the nearest town is Hveragerði.
Knowing what I was expecting this time, as opposed to going expecting the Hotel Ork standards, I would stay there again.

We discovered it late, when we were tired of looking for an accomodation and finding uncomfortable rooms.
It is an Hotel, not a Guesthouse, so big rooms ensuite, nice staff, a very good and huge breakfast, all for the same price as a Guesthouse. it has hot tube also.
Decoration is the best.

I visted with a small group (five in all) and the bookingwas made by agents. The rooms were clean and spacious, with good bathrooms. But the hot water comes from a geo-thermal source a few fields away and so it can take a time before it reaches the hot tap.

Although not far from Iceland's Road No 1, the hotel is on a side road heading towards Porlakshofn and so is a bit difficult to raeche without your own transport.

Breakfast was the usual unexciting Icelandic buffet, but dinners were very good home-cooked local dishes.

The hotel is family owned and family run.

The hotel itself isn't open at this time of year, so we were offered one of the 'cottages; a 'swiss style' wooden building. This had fantastic views and water supplied from the ground next to us. The cottage was cosy and warm and had a good living/cooking area. As we were staying for 3 nights we chose to splurge out and pay for a bigger cottage for the 3 of us (2 adults 1 teenager). Unfortunately our teen wasn't comfortable with her bedroom - it was a very small room with bunk beds and a tiny window and we hadn't been supplied with all the bedding and towels for the 4-6 people we were paying for (we thought that only 4 towels between the 3 of us, given the bonus of our own hot tub, was a bit mean).

The hot tub would have been great had it been working (it only worked for 1 night of the 3 that we were there) and the water system to the house made a ridiculous amount of noise at night. A mixed experience overall.

First, a quick word on how we got to this hotel. I had originally booked a room for us (myself, my wife, and 6-year old son) at the Hotel Eldhestar based on their glossy website ("An Eco-labelled Countryside Hotel dedicated to the Icelandic Horse"). Well, an hour before arriving, I phoned Eldhestar only to be told that "due to a computer problem, we are overbooked and have put you in another hotel". Upon arriving at 9:30pm in the rain with a tired, cranky child, it was obvious that the "computer glitch" was a large group that had come in to displace us, and the utterly indifferent attitude of the staff didn't help.

We arrived at our new hotel, Hotel Hlid, and a kind lady immediately showed our son the hotpot. They then showed us to a large family room with very beautiful view. The couple that runs the hotel were very helpful, making phone calls for us whenever we had tourist questions. We opted for the hotel dinner one night, and couldn't have been more pleased: Delicious home-cooking, and the staff went out of their way to accomodate my son's many allergies. We would highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a simple, clean, friendly place to stay in the Selfoss/Hveragerdi area.
