“Lovely”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

We stayed at the farm last night and we had a great stay. If you are looking for a nice place in the countryside, then you found it. We really love animals and the cats and dogs there were really friendly. We think that our dog enjoyed it even more than we did. The team there was lovely and always around to help you. The bed was very comfy and the room was nice.
Dinner was simple but well cooked. Breakfast was ok.
Cleanliness could be slightly improved. It is a nice and quiet place for a relaxing break.
All in all a great stay in the countryside. Thanks a lot for everything.

My wife and I attended a friends weeding here a week ago. We booked a room and arrived early. The place itself looks very nice and is a good setting for a wedding if the weather is good. Other areas can only cater for around 50 people.

The staff (all appear under 20) seem to be running this place for the family who own it without any professional or formal hotel, bar or hospitality training. After our stay we got the impression that the horse business come first and this is an add on for an extra income.
Check Out SEE LATER but check your bill as they can’t add up.

Hygiene.- The hotel has cats and dogs that are allowed to roam freely and unchecked in the bar and restaurant. The cat appeared during the wedding breakfast and at breakfast, jumping up onto clients laps. Staff removed cat at wedding breakfast and took into the kitchen!!!!!! Environmental health would love that one!

The Room.- The room was of a good size by very dark. The bedding had stains on the duvet cover and there was plenty of dust around where a cleaner couldn’t easily run a duster over it. The TV did not work. Picture hung with screws and string showing. The shower room also had dirt on the tiles by radiator and the bottom of the shower door was corroded and mouldy (easy cover fix with some sealant.) The overall standard was average but not worth the money compared to other stays we have had. Would normally expect to pay around £50 for this standard.

Bar Service.-When staff appeared they were friendly. Seem to have a mix match of glasses and poor listening skills as gave incorrect drink order more than once.

Breakfast.- Cereals and Orange juice were just chucked on a vacant table and in odd basic Tupperware tubs. 3star? No bread plates on table so had to put toast on main plate.
When waitress came to take order, there was no explanation of options or what you could have. No offer of toast, The breakfast was hot but ingredients lacked taste and sausage appeared to be a basic one mostly rusk / binding agent. The only ‘adult’ member of staff is the chef.

Wedding & Wedding Reception.
Nicely set up in garden with gazebo chairs and red carpet – very nice. It appears the hotel only has around 50 chairs in total so these were moved from the garden to the reception room, then to the bar and disco room, so until this was done we were forced to stay in the bar until removals had been completed.

Starter was served with bread and butter but again no side plates provided.!!!
Vegetables provided on a serve yourself basis with soup spoons as serving spoons. A weeding service with no silver service? The food itself was good and hot. .Well done chef. There was about 45 of us.
The staff failed to prepare and fill guests glasses with champagne for toast, so most had to raise an empty glass. Just amateurish.

The wedding cake was supported with a basic kitchen knife as appears hotel cannot afford a fancy one for weddings. The cake was placed on a table later for guests to help themselves. A pile of plates were available and literally a pile of forks just heaped on the table. No napkins

Overall if you want fairly good food in a nice setting but can overlook what some see as basic niceties then this place is just OK. It could with some training and professional input be stunning.

Rooms are not currently worth the money. Now to paying and check out!

Was presented with a hand written bill showing room at £95.00 (discount for wedding)
And bar bill workings. Big printed TOTAL box £150.50

I gave the ‘girl’ £50.50 in cash and wished to pay £100 by card. When checking the total it was £226.34 I raised this and was told that’s right, the room plus the bar total is £226.34
Pointing out I have just given her £50.50 in cash how did she come to £226.34?
Again said was the figures added up. But I said it clearly says TOTAL , yes TOTAL for everything is £150.50 She tried adding it up on a mobile as couldn’t find a calculator. She couldn't even do this.

After now being very p****d off I asked for a pen and gave her a lesson in long hand adding up. And then had to remind her that she is holding £50.50 in cash so she needs to put £100 on the card machine. By this time she is looking at the floor and just passes the card machine. Before I put my pin in I advised ‘ its ok to look at me and even offer an apology if you like’ This is your job and I expect you to be able to do it. I did feel sorry but as a paying guest expect professional service.

Well that’s the Crockstead. If you’re posh don’t stay here you'll go mad., if you’re not, expect foibles of disappointment. If you are the owner and reading this, employing your children and their friends (as it appears) to represent your business and run it may be cheap but is the wrong thing to do. You are wasting a great opportunity.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel and to raise your comments. We continue to improve and this is only possible with customer feedback however as a guest at this particular wedding you are not taking in to account their chosen requests.

We pride ourselves on our flexibility when our bride and groom approach us with special requests which cater to their individual budgets. We regularly hold weddings for up to 200 guests with the full service of canapes, arrival drinks, three course wedding breakfast, table wine, toasting wine, coffee and an evening buffet. This is not what was requested by your bride and groom and the whole day was tailored to THEIR specific requirements. If their requirements are not up to your standards then we feel that it is only fair that you raise this with them as it was THEIR day and their wishes!!

You have made a number of staff extremely happy complimenting them on their age ( one has just has a 35th birthday!). Whilst you have stated that you had some issues with checking out you failed to mention that you intimidated a younger member of the team reducing her to tears and a panic attack which has resulted in her resigning.

We appreciate you raising some concerns regarding your room - if we had been made aware at the time of your stay then they could have been rectified. As a hotel, unfortunately some guests deem it reasonable to take items from the bedrooms including tv remotes so we generally have spares in reception. Our linen is sent to a professional company who specialise in hotel laundry so we will be following up your comments with them.

We are a farm hotel and all of our livestock which includes peacocks, ducks, chickens, cats and pigs are part of the team and make Crockstead the special place that it is, which so many people enjoy visiting. We are sorry that you do not appreciate them being part of Crockstead FARM Hotel.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel on 28.06.14 to attend a wedding reception there that evening.

Everything looked promising on the approach to the hotel, the gardens all looked good.

We arrived at the reception which was unmanned. We rang the bell as the sign requested and waited. Then we waited some more. Eventually somebody arrived to check us in and we were taken to our room.

The room was not great. The bed cover and top pillows looked old and worn. On closer inspection they were marked and stained. We removed both the covers and pillows to the corner of the room. The bathroom was basic. The toilet had been used and had not been flushed - No excuse for this. No bath but the shower was ok. The mirrored wardrobe doors were dirty. All this made us feel quite uncomfortable.

The wedding reception was to start at 7.30pm. At 7.00pm we left our room planning on having a drink in the hotel bar whilst waiting for the reception to start. There were no bar staff in the bar. At 7.15pm a girl with a vacuum cleaner (I was surprised to find they owned one) came upstairs and said she would call someone to serve us. at 7.20pm she returned and told us that all the bar staff were over at the reception and if we wanted a drink, we must go over there to get one. What if we were guests who were not invited to the reception I wonder???

Went down for breakfast just after 08.30am. No staff around and breakfast wasn't set up. I'm not sure what time breakfast was to start as nobody told us but I would have thought 08.30am was a reasonable time to expect breakfast. Staff appeared and set up breakfast shortly after our arrival. I had high hopes for the cooked breakfast, farm hotels generally benefit from great local produce, but not in this case. The cooked breakfast was basic.

Overall the quality of the room was poor. This in itself would not have bothered me if it were at least clean, which it was not. The hotel is seriously understaffed with no visible management. It seems that the hotel is actually a function venue which happens to have some rooms available but these are, at best and afterthought.

Since returning home, I have read some other reviews - good and bad and in anticipation of the hotels response to this review I would offer the following- We did not complain when we checked out for two reasons 1. Who would we have complained to? There was clearly no management there, only one of the two staff that we had previously seen. 2. We had spent 20 minutes waiting at an empty bar for a drink which the hotel could not actually manage. How long would we have had to wait for a manager to arrive if at all.

I returned home today after a two night stay and was just so sad to leave. The staff were wonderful and really friendly. The breakfasts were fantastic - really hot and freshly cooked full English. The room was really clean and comfortable and it was so peaceful and quiet. Percy the peacock and his three babies were a joy to watch as were the ducks and Monty the cat! It was a wonderful place to be and I can't wait to return.

We booked this hotel for a group. The receptionist (who appears to do everything at the hotel) could not have been more accommodating to our needs/demands! They put a meal on for us on the Sunday night and an early breakfast on the Monday. Rooms were clean, beds comfy and excellent value for money.
Would stay again and recommend to others.

Just had a great weekend break. Staff very helpful and polite. The room was fine with a power shower I wish I could take home! The grounds are extremely well kept considering it's also a working equestrian centre. The function room proved to be an ideal venue for the Saturday night party which was made all the better for an elaborate hot and cold buffet prepared from the hotel kitchen. A more than adequate full English set us up for the day ahead. We will add this one to somewhere we will happily use again!

Lots of guests commented on the lovely venue ;.both inside the 'old threashing floor'-with beams and the 'rustic' atmosphere which was the theme of the reception; and outside, which was helped by the lovely, sunny warm, spring weather, which meant we could fully enjoy the extensive, well-kept grounds, and courtyard, and the children loved the ducks, and peacock-who gave us many wonderful displays of his tail, and was included in photos of the bride and groom; as was a horse also, from the equestrian establishment on the same premises! The staff were helpful and responsive in the many e-mails ,phone calls, and visits when planning the day(-we mostly dealt with Ross). The food was very tasty and well served, and the bride was able to have her wish for 'fish and chips'! We were able to plan our own menu, in all respects ,which meant we could keep costs to an affordable level for us (-so if you are on quite a tight budget -try here: this was on a Thursday which is cheaper.) and had access the day before to decorate the 'reception' as the bride and groom wished .So, thank you all for helping us all to have a memorable and happy day.
