“Awful stay...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2014

We had a one night stop over here whilst visiting the family and we arrived to find the room dull, dated and 'motel' styled. The rooms were away from the main building which meant a walk in the rain after checking in.
The carpet looked fairly new and clean whereas everything else was 'tatty' and old. There was dust everywhere as if it hadn't been detail cleaned or had anyone stay there in ages. The kettle was half full of water and stank and had brown scum around the water line... In any case there wasn't any milk portions available as promised if we had of wanted morning tea! The bed linen was clean and crisp but the mattress had clearly 'had it's day' and there was no protector on it.
We were awoken by our 'neighbours' returning home in a 'lively fashion' at 2am (to say the least).
When morning came we were in 'need' of a cup of tea... Reception was due to open at 7.30, so my partner walked across the car park at 7.40 to request a change of kettle and some milk portions.. No... the place was in darkness, they obviously had a better nights sleep than us!!
He came back and went for a shower before breakfast. There were bottles of toiletries in the bathroom so thought he'd use those.... Oh no they were empty, no one had bothered to refill them.
We went across to breakfast in the main building at 8.15, and to be honest it was lovely. All the usual from cereal to yoghurts and full cooked breakfast.
When we checked out the receptionist (who was also the waitress) didn't ask how our stay was and when I tried to explain our concerns she showed no care. We got the bill which was £75 for the night, I queried it as the form we signed stated £65.. she said that there had been an error.. we had been quoted for one adult not 2. That was the last straw.. next time we will stay elsewhere!

Room Tip: Just don't!

Stayed here as going to a wedding nearby and pictures on the internet gave the impression of a nice family run hotel. Although the bar and restaurant area seem nice and clean and welcoming the rooms are quite the opposite. Looked like the carpet had never seen a Hoover, we had to remove some uninvited room mates.....spiders in a cobweb that had clearly been there a while. Mould on bathroom window and tv was broken. Like others have said room doors do not seem to lock very well so feel a little exposed. Thank god the bed was clean!!! Don't waste your money by staying here!

A group of us use this restaurant as a meeting place once a month.
The carvery food has always been excellent and plentiful.
Very reasonably priced.
The bar area is warm and inviting, especially when the fire is going.

We booked a double room at the Halland Forge as it was right next door to the pub where we were attending my niece's 18th. Although we had read several reviews before arriving, we thought we would give it a chance as they were quite mixed. Arrived mid afternoon to check in - given room 12 on first floor. When we entered the room there was a fusty smell. Bed looked clean and tidy though - decor very dated and worn. There were dust bunnys on the floor along with quite a few dead moths - obvious that the carpet had not been vacuumed. The bathroom light pull was made of twine! (Very rustic!) The bath was stained and there was some mould. The door to the "balcony" was unlocked and would not lock - we felt the security was not good enough as directly below the window was a small brick wall which if stood upon an average person would be able to climb up and gain entry if they so wished! We were not happy as had reserved the room at £75 per night and did not think that this was value for money. We went back to reception and voiced our concerns. The man at reception agreed that this was not acceptable and offered us to view another room - Room 20. This room was on the ground floor. On entering the room, there was a dead bumble bee on the floor. The room did not smell, which was good BUT the decor was also dated. The front window could easily be opened from the outside - there was no locking device on the inside and the rear windows were very dated metal casement which also could easily be accessed from the open rear and woodlands - again a security problem.
We were not happy with this room either and decided to stay elsewhere. For the price that the hotel charges we would have expected a much better standard and quality. Having spoken to locals it appears that this is pretty much the standard and they were not surprised that we had left.
Would definitely not recommend

Room Tip: Cannot recommend this hotel/motel at the moment due to the poor standard for the price charged.

My boyfriend and I stayed here with a groupon voucher, we had a 2 night stay including an afternoon tea. After a lovely day walking in the local countryside we came back to the Forge where we were served with a delicious afternoon tea. We then spent a lovely relaxing evening lounging in the bar (the free WIFI meant that we were not without our technological luxuries!) and then a yummy roast from the carvery in the evening. Our room was lovely and spacious, plenty of room to hang up / put away clothes, and it was definitely more like a motel than a hotel (the rooms are separate to the restaurant and bar) but this added a certain quirky charm to the place. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and we were even in room 4 which was absolutely fine (I was terrified at first, based on a previous review!). It was great value. If you are looking for 5* star luxury then I wouldn't recommend this place, and if I have to be critical I would say that the mattress could do with replacing, but the place has lots of positives and the breakfast was yummy too. Thanks for a great value, lovely relaxing break!!

We stayed for two nights with a Groupon voucher and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The management and staff were very friendly and helpful, our room clean, very cosy and warm.
Another plus was the excellent quality of both breakfast and dinner and the generous portions on offer.
It is well placed for visits to the Sussex coast,to explore the beautiful Wield of Kent and the South Downs
I cannot understand why some reviewers have been so totally negative about all aspects of the place.I suppose some people are very hard to please.

We spent one night here and the room was of a very good size, very clean and well maintained.
Being away from the main building it was also nice and quiet .
The food was good and good value, the breakfast was a good size and came to the table nice and hot.
We had a power cut whilst waiting for dinner and staff made sure that we wanted for bother.
All in all a nice hotel run and staffed by nice people
