This is a fabulous family gite in the Vendee region. A few minutes away from the bustling seaside town of Bretignolles sur Mer (which has a huge market twice a week) and only 10 (ten!) minutes drive from the superb Vendee coast. The New Cottage is very well laid out with plenty of space for a family of 4-5, modern appliances and a private garden around the back. There isn't a bakery in walking distance, but fear not, as the local baker arrives in a mobile shop at 8.30 every morning with a good supply of breads and pastries. There is everything else you would expect from a family gite, including swimming pool, playing field and table tennis and Cathy and Howard organise a drinks party every week which is a good way to meet other families. The owners are good company and very helpful, always on hand to satisfy any (reasonable) request as well as giving advice and tips. The local beaches are excellent, with separate areas for swimming and body-boarding and the waves are a good strength without getting too rough. There are lifeguards, cafes and toilets too and some great rock pools. Between the Dunes and Normandeliere beaches is a little area populated by hundreds of hermit crabs and lots of other delights to be found. By the middle of August the Atlantic is warm enough to bathe quite comfortably without a wetsuit. There is also a huge local cycle network with bike paths off the roads for slightly cooler days. In short, there is nothing I can think of that could make this holiday any better.
Just returned home from another enjoyable holiday at Dolphin Gites. This time we stayed in the 'New Cottage' and found it to have everything we needed. It was clean and tidy on arrival and Howard and Cathy were as friendly and welcoming as always. The gite is lovely and light and airy and an excellent size for our family of 2 adults and 19 and 16 year old sons. We enjoyed having barbeques in the garden out the back of the gite and spending days relaxing around the pool and our sons enjoyed the table tennis. The area has loads to offer which is one of the reasons we have returned more than once, amongst other things, this year we visited the climbing centre a couple of miles away and also went go karting twice which is nearby, we hired pedaloes on Lake Jaunay and spent the day at Puy du Fou. All the beaches we visited were lovely and we never had a problem parking. There are also good supermarkets nearby and a bakers van turns up most mornings too. We have now had four holidays at Dolphin gites and stayed in 3 different gites, and have loved them all!
This is our third holiday at Dolphin Gites and it spoils us for anywhere else. The standard of cleanliness is extremely high, the gite is exceptionally well equipped and the hosts Cathy and Howard are fantastic. The restaurant in the village is expensive but well worth a visit. There is a good beach with restaurant nearby at Normandeliere and a great coastal path both for walking and cycling with many parking places. Bretignolles has a super u and a great twice weekly market. A good place to sit with a coffee and people watch. Another great holiday thank you.
Dolphin gites is a complex of five gites and the owners home with a lovely clean pool and a large garden. It's perfect if you are looking for peace, quiet and privacy but with a safe area for your kids to play with other children and the option to socialise should you want it. For us with just one child, it was just what we wanted, he went off and played whilst we relaxed in our private garden with a drink.
New cottage itself, in my opinion is the best of the gites, it's light, bright and modern. The others have more character and charm but are more rustic as a result. I loved the high ceiling and large windows in new cottage. Having a washing machine was also a bonus.
The gite was spotlessly clean and equipped with all you could need, the bed was super comfortable. I loved having the private garden at the back, it was large and had a table and chairs and a BBQ. It was a lovely place to relax in the afternoon as it got the sun and was really peaceful.
Howard and Cathy are really helpful and friendly, they are on hand if you need them but equally leave you to get on with things. They host welcome drinks once a week which is a great opportunity to chat to fellow guests over a glass of wine.
The daily bakery van is wonderful, lovely produce.
There is so much to do in the area, the cycle paths are excellent.
We thoroughly enjoyed our two weeks at new cottage and would not hesitate to recommend it.
Well, where do I start ?
Probably at the beginning....We stayed in this gite last year and was perfect for our needs.(please refer to my previous submission for confirmation). The wifi is spot on and there are a plethora of films and mini series to watch if required.
We have found the owners Howard & Cathy not only accommodating but truly professional in their approach to customer friendly service.
These three weeks have been truly fabulous. In this time we have done loads, from cycling around the area to having a go at the velo rail nearby which is a must at 26 euros, to trying out the local canoes which are 4 euros if booked between 10am and noon....
The location of Dolphin gites as previously stated is central to all the amenities, either in the village or down to towards the beach....
No vehicle is required unless going for a "big shop" at the supermarket which is only 3 miles away.
The town of Bretignolles sur mer is 3 miles from our gite and is a traditional French coastal location...
The market on Sundays is not to be missed as there is a wide range of goings on to keep you interested.
The beach is perfectly situated as is the many cycle paths and routes that meander & weave through this beautiful part of the vendee.
Also nearby is a petit cemetery which has evidence of commonwealth war graves. This is an absolute must for anyone interested in this type of past time.
If its the pool you are after, then this is located in the 1.2 acre of gardens and is perfect to unwind and chill...
Or if its a quiet part of the gardens to read a book , Dolphin gites has it all...Sitting in the well manicured gardens on a cloudless sunny day is like being in the verse of a poem...Its tranquility is hard to be matched and surely impossible to be surpassed...
We have lived & loved every minute of this adventure and will return....
