“The best cabin!!!!”
Reviewed 13 May 2012

This was our first visit and the cabin was perfect!!!! Very secluded, very clean, excellent location to downtown Carbondale. The owners were very helpful with questions we had. The hot tub was very clean and nice to unwind in at the end of the day. The satalite tv was perfect to watch movies and shows on. The kids loved having us build a fire every night to roast marshmallows. Our family will definitely go back. There was a comment about the hill that you drive on to get to the cabin and we drive a little 4 door car and it was no big deal.

This was our first visit and we will for sure be back! The cabin was everything we were wanting. We didn't even see the owners the entire time, it was very peaceful & we were able to relax without a care in the world. My only complaint would be that the beds are terribly firm. They're not pillowtop mattresses, which was a major difference from my big, soft bed at home. I think we would've enjoyed our trip better had we had better sleep, but it wasn't a big deal. I would suggest bringing some memory foam! = ) Also, the gravel road leading to & from is narrow & there's a steep hill to get to either cabin. The tires on our little compact car were spinning for a few seconds. Think this through, especially if you're hauling anything.

This was our 4th visit in as many years and we like the place for some of the reasons others don't! Our cell phones don't connect till we get to the main road and the cabins are 'off the beaten path'. And life without wifi is not as horrible as it sounds. The access road *is* narrow and there is a very steep section where my current tires on the suv just had troubles climbing up.

But the cabin (we stayed in #2) is just what we want! At the very end of the road it stands by itself. It's very quiet there and that's what we came here for. We stack some jazz in the DVD player, dust off the rockers and kick back with books on the front porch or sit with cameras and snap some of the wildlife that meanders around there. This year it was pretty hot and we had to deal with horseflies but otherwise we were fine.

We loaded the fridge up with supplies, went out one day and bought some local wine and soaked in the hot tub till the Mornings got too hot, or the evenings too crowded. (We had a visiting raccoon that would arrive on back porch steps 'begging', and it has family about as well).

The pine cabin is very nice with a great room, one bedroom, and a loft. Front porch has a swing and two rockers that will crush a toe if you aren't careful. <grin>. Back porch has a screened section with a hot tub and seating, and a outside portion with a gas grill. there is an outdoor fire pit as well. The front door screen and back porch screen were beat up a bit this time (raccoons?), so we couldn't prop open doors when it rained, but otherwise the place is still what we are looking for, and we'll be returning again.

The cabin was just fine. Everything was perfect inside and clean. We could of asked for a more peaceful place. Not a sound except the birds singing. Watch out though for the wasp this time of year. They like log cabins and I don't like wasp. They won't hurt you but they sure fly around you alot. the bed was a wee bit too hard for me. I like it a bit on the soft side so I slept on the futon and it was just fine.
Now for the gravel road. Pay close attention. Nowhere I mean nowhere on their website does it tell you that they have a narrow steep gravel road leeding up to the cabins. We made it halfway up and the bike went over. This is a Harley Road Glide! My leg got all bruised up but we were lucky. My husband got it up again and tried cause there is nowhere I mean nowhere to turn around and it went down again.
We have 900 dollars worth of damage done to the bike and are very very upset so learn a lesson from us.

We absolutely LOVE staying at Devil's Kitchen Cabins. We have 2 children (one special needs) and find it very hard to truly appreciate each other as husband and wife at home. Every fall we make a long weekend trip and get some much needed "us" time.

These cabins provide the perfect environment. We can go into town to eat or shop if we want but most of our time is spent relaxing on the swing or the hottub. Sitting around talking uninterrupted is one of lifes greatest pleasures!

We've been visiting for 4 years now and have never had an issue with communication. Jan is a very nice man and we've always called to book or with questions and they've always gotten right back to us.

We have been to Devils Kitchen cabins several times and love it as much as we did the first time. Did not see the owners any. Had peace the whole time. We have been to several cabins in Southern Illinois and we pick Devils Kitchen as the best. We try to make it to the cabin around 4 times a year. Would highly recommend this cabin to others.

The cabin was awesome. Beatifully crafted, roomy and clean. Great hottub on screened in back porch. Gas grill for grilling. Nice firepit area with firewood provided. Front porch with roomy, sturdy porch swing and 2 wooden rockers for relaxing. Great sound system, sterio can be turned on/off inside the cabin, front porch and back porch so quality is awesome while inside or in the hottub or even sitting around the firepit. Never saw the owners, they are not constantly "in your face" which was fitting for what we hoped for in this getaway, we wanted solitued. We would like to make this a yearly "long weekend" getaway destination. Great winetrail with several wineries nearby also some orchards and some great parks.
