Traveled here on Thursday 14th June, returning on Sunday 24th June.

On arrival at the Riu Touareg we were greeted by the customary fruit punch drink, there were approximately 80 people needing checking in, we were advised to go to the restaurant and enjoy lunch and return to reception after, this was indeed good advice as those queuing had all dispersed and we checked in with no hassle or wait. The food in the restaurant was indeed very tasty, hot and well presented. There is no worry over food for any body travelling here, there is tasty, fresh fish, meat, pasta, soups, salads and of course the customary burgers, nuggets and chips should you so choose.
We were taken to our room it was in block 1 right at the end of the complex,it was in the adult only end of the complex. The rooms are a decent size with the added bonus of a mini bar and 4 optics of alcohol in the adult only rooms, these are replaced every 2 days,if indeed you manage to drink them all !.
The complex is vast but easy to find your way around, the food is excellent, whether in the restaurant, pool bars or themed restaurants (the Italian was our favourite). The drinks were very palatable and many to choose from and indeed enjoy.
The main pool is lively with all the usual activities, the infinity pool is quieter and has a stunning unspoilt view straight over the ocean. The adult only pool is quieter and more relaxed, exactly what my wife and I wanted from our holiday. The adult section also have a champagne party at 12.00 on 2 days during the week with singers and dancers brought in, this is a not to miss event with sun, fizzy and dancing for all. Sunday breakfast is served with FIZZY for all if you wish to indulge, a very nice touch.

The staff are all magical, friendly and always smiling, nothing is ever to much trouble, there are to many to mention but I wish to praise John and Djorge the bar men in the adults bar.
Finally the beach, its clean, very very long and unspoilt with awe inspiring waves crashing in all day, not really a swimming beach as the red flags were flying every day we were there, however you can venture in if you are a very competent swimmer, there are about 6 lifeguards stationed on the beach all day. There are about 10 little stalls on the beach selling nik naks, these are so much cheaper than the shops in the hotel, worth the walk, they are so layed back and not at all pushy.

Room Tip: The adult section is a lot quieter and definitely worth the slight increase in price.

The Riu Touareg was highly recommended to me by work colleagues and boy were they right. I read the mixed reviews prior to flying out on the 10 June 15 and can honestly say that those few negative reviews were either an exception to the norm or the issues exaggerated. Me and my wife had a fantastic experience from checking in which was very efficient and pleasantly surprised that my request for a room in block 8 was doable. Booked all the specialty restaurants for our 10 night stay at check in which I suggest anyone contemplating a holiday here does as the places do seem to be taken up quickly. All restaurants were of a very good standard including the main restauarant. You are spoiled for choice with something for everyone’s individual tastes. Our room was immaculately maintained during our stay no toilet smells and clean sheets on request. Perhaps the bath towels could be changed as they were a tad tired looking. The pool is fantastic with plenty of sun beds, no need to get up in the middle of the night to reserve a sun bed although quite a few visitors obviously did! The drinks were plentiful, whilst not branded the gin and tonic was great and I’m told the baileys provided was as good as the real thing. Bar staff are absolutely fantastic and give a 1st class service. Evening entertainment was entertaining and had something for everyone to enjoy. West end it is not but very enjoyable none the less. I loved the place and will definitely be visiting again.

This really is a holiday in paradise, however there are a few negatives that you should consider if you were thinking of booking at this hotel.

The positives:

Beautiful setting, bang on a superb sandy beach (very rough sea but great to watch the big waves)

Excellent friendly staff throughout from the gardeners to the animation team through to the cleaners and reception staff

Hotel and grounds in pristine condition

Numerous pools all clean and recently refurbished. Infinity pool relaxed and quite whilst there is more activity (animation teams games etc) around the main pool area, however the swim up bar can become a little rowdy at times. We had not upgraded to adults only but had a ”peep” at the adults only pool area... it really was like a morgue

We holidayed mid June and there are always sunloungers available poolside and on the beach

Food is excellent and there is always plenty to choose from, all freshly cooked before you. However the themed restaurants buffet style are pretty similar to what you can eat in the main restaurant(food very nice though)

Maids clean the rooms and change the towels daily and are very thorough in their work

Animation team work very hard all day and evening and are a credit to the hotel, they make everyone feel welcome

It can become quite busy around the bar areas of an evening but the service is very quick and efficient

There does seem many returning holiday makers which emphasises the standard of the complex

This really is a large complex (2nd largest Riu in the world) however you quickly adapt and find your feet

NEGATIVES: (Only personal preference and should not stop you from staying here)

It’s a long flight(6hrs) on small cramped and old Tui plane proberbly ready for the scrap yard with no tv entertainment.

The alcoholic drinks in the complex are very poor quality. All the wines are pretty much un-drinkable and although the beer is ok it does go flat pretty quick. The spirits are week and the cocktails very synthetic in taste. There is no option to buy premium drinks (not sure what options are available in the adult section

SMOKING...... this is what would prevent us from returning again.... the complex is geared up for smokers. Apart from inside the main restaurants you can smoke almost anywhere. The main inside bar area is a constant haze of smoke of an evening, with every table having ash trays to encourage the ignorant people who seem to thrive on puffing there toxins onto us healthy people who wish for our clothes to smell nice and fresh. Smoking is also encouraged (ash trays on ALL tables) in the outside dining area, so you could sit down to eat and an ignoramous would sit smoking next to you. Designated smoking area should be made available so us non smokers can enjoy eating and drinking al fresco!!! This hotel, and Tui should step into the 21st century regarding there smoking policies as it really is an health and safety issue

Would we return the the Riu Touareg?.. we would return in a shot..... if the smoking policies change... and this was a view of many people we spoke to

Room Tip: Block 9 is 5he most modern, however ours in block 5 was fine

Well as most of the other reviews say this place is absolutely amazing (the other reviews don't make sense) the only downside is the flight there and back on a very cramped aircraft (we are used to the Dreamliner) but that does not affect the hotel nor should it.

Checkin

Yes there are queues but so are there at supermarkets not very long to wait given room details a map and stickers for the cases (leave cases outside and they will be delivered to your room) I did in the end go and collect our cases as we wanted to unpack and look around the hotel but my choice.

Room

We had a family suite loads of room separate bedroom with door bathroom with door and door to toilet only a shower curtain but shouldn't be a problem, tea and coffee making facilities provided as was shower gem in a dispenser fridge with bottled water.

Food

Always plenty of variety from breakfast through to lunch wine and beer on tap and too tea coffee and cold drinks, never a problem to get a table and staff very polite if a little over worked

Facilities

Loads of sunbeds both in and out of the shade we didn't use the pools so can't comment but the swim up bar very very popular just a shame people tend to drink too much and start to get loud ( not all of the time just in a couple of days) luckily the load mouths were only there a few days also wonder why they never have to go for the call of nature!!

Staff

Amazing friendly and so eager to please nothing is too much trouble and how the waiters remember your drinks from night to night is wonderful.

Wifi

We could get it if we went onto the balcony (we stayed in block 7) and on the majority of the hotel ground sometimes
In busy periods it was sketchy but more the good enough for a free service

Quad bikes on the beach

We took a 3 hour trip and what a wonderful and enlightening trip the island is just so baron but some of the beaches and surrounding areas are STUNNING well worth the €85 for the 3 hours

Overall

Great staff great hotel stunning location would recommend to anyone and don't take to much notice of the negative comments about theft we left cash out for our cleaner for the first 3 days never taken had to wait for her to arrive and give it to her, left the safe open one day and not a thing removed.

Hope this review helps you to try this great hotel

This was our second visit to the Touareg but will not be returning for our 3rd. We were in the adults only area which costs more we found that it wasn’t worth the extra expense. We found that it was filled with young adults and not couples, so parties in the rooms caused some disruption at times. We requested before traveling an upper floor room with a sea view, but when we arrived we were placed on the ground floor with garden views. We requested this as we knew the cats like going into the ground floor rooms and we didn’t want them in our room. I was placed in room 1011 and other than cats I had ‘cockroaches’. After 3 days in the room, I turned the lights on and several cockroaches around the room. Just say that I would not stay in the room. I reported this to reception to change rooms but was informed they would treat the room first, which I declined. I was reluctantly given a change of room, which had what I had requested, 1st floor sea view.
The food was OK and found something to eat at all the meal times. The main issue is the smoking. You cannot sit outside without having someone smoking by the side of you. Even in the adults only area we had a no smoking area, but on several occasions people who were ‘vaping’ were sat there. They are still smoking! It took a number of people to complain to the bar to get them to move to the smoking area across the path.
There is some no smoking area, at the very end of the restaurant (about 10 tables), but they were still vaping or smokers were eating there then moving over the line to smoke, which defeats the object. What is needed is more no smoking areas by the pools, restaurants and snack bar. Everywhere you went you just smelt smoke, even on your balcony!
We visited the hotel at the beginning of June and the first week we didn’t have a problem getting a sun lounger at 9am but this changed in the second week. I went diving at 07.30 and most were reserved with a folded towel occupying the bed. Some of these weren’t used until 11am or later.
We went of one excursion with TUI, Capital Sights. Don’t bother with this. It was a 3 hour walk around Sal Rai on very rough ground. My Mum had a stick to walk, but the guide left us and at one point couldn’t find the group.
When we went to book this trip with the TUI reps they were missing. According to the welcome meeting they should be there between 0830 and 1730, but they weren’t. We where informed by them they all have lunch together between 1300-1400. There are 10 of them, should this be spread out so there is always someone there? They also didn’t move from the main reception area, it can be a long walk up to reception in the heat of the day. When we did speak to them they were unfriendly and didn’t care.
The staff in the bars were always friendly and helpful, they even remembered the drinks we had, so I didn’t need to ask.
Until the smoking is controlled we will not be returning. It isn’t a place to go if you have any problems with breathing ie Asthma.

Room Tip: Not on the ground floor if you don't like cats or insects
