Description: The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style cuisine and culture since 1898. One of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, it is now run by fourth generation, Pete Berghoff. At today's Berghoff, menus have evolved to add newer, lighter and more contemporary dishes, but it's still the same old Berghoff, down to the famous root beer. Open for lunch and dinner, the Berghoff's wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and entrées is sure to satisfy everyone in your party. With fresh ingredients, seasonal menus and vegetarian & gluten-free dishes, it's "tradition with a twist!" Private Dining provides a truly unique event experience within the setting of the historic Berghoff building. Host your next event in one of our four private rooms. Disappointing--I can't imagine the good reviews coming from previous reviewers. The Spaetzle was dry, brittle, and sparse. It was served with diced "root vegetables" which looked like potatoes. The Jaegerschnitzel was tasteless and tough. The plate was all pale yellow. I won't mention the cold "apple strudel" with a demitasse spoonful of vanilla ice cream. Ooops--mentioned it. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with old-fashioned woodwork. All in all, go JUST for a fair beer and a large pretzel. You're welcome.

If you like some of the old world staples, Sausage, Spoetzel, Saurbratten and the like, this is the place. Has been in the same location forever and with a bar that serves 12 oz beers for $5 and 16 oz for $6, you cannot go wrong for lunch, dinner or happy hour. Walking distance from many of the downtown hotels convenient location at State and Adams. Spend some time if you are into chicago history walking around the restaurant to look at some of the historic pictures. There is a great one at the entrance to the restaurant about the Chicgo "world's fair" Columbia Exposition, many of the buildings became the Museums that are world renown.

We went to Berghoff's bc I saw an ad in the Travel Guide and it offered free root beer if you brought in the ad. I forgot the ad but asked if I could have the free root beer anyway and the server said ok. The food was fantastic. Order a pretzel. They are HUGE! The woodwork is beautiful....I could've spent an hour admiring it. I also enjoyed the fact that tourists and locals were there.

While in Chicago we had to go. Really nice interior, great service and generally the food was really good. But my asparagus and carrot sides were lukewarm at best. And somewhat under cooked, which some like. The only problem is the larger asparagus spears were very under cooked and woody, uneatable. Therefore the lost of one star.
