“Great Location. Friendly, Helpful Staff.”
Reviewed 13 June 2011

The Dana is a newish, boutique hotel...well located only three short blocks from Michigan Avenue in the heart of the prime shopping district and close to public transportation. It sits on a tiny footprint, with only about 10-12 rooms per floor. While the hotel has all the trappings of a trendy, too-cool-for-even-itself property, it has NONE of that vible (except, perhaps, in the dark, rooftop bar that was filled with twenty-somethings when we popped up for a look one evening). Bell, check-in and concierge staff are casual, super friendly and always helpful with multiple requests. The room was warm contemporary in decor, spacious, equipped with all of today's gadgets and featured a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling window (no special view...but good city perspective; black-out shades were great). Seriously comfortable beds with crisp, white linens and down or synthetic-down comforters. An abundance of pillows. Flat-screen TV. Keurig coffee maker and all the fixings. Wine and other beverages in the fridge (relatively reasonably priced, surprisingly). Lots of plugs for charging devices. Bath is good size (only one sink...but enough counter space for two to share). Shower is huge and has a rain-head and hand spray. Beware...the back shower wall is all glass and faces into the bedroom. You have to pull the curtain in the bedroom before you go into the bathroom if you don't want to shower on display to your roommate and/or those who live in the apartments across the street (we heard funny stories).. Must confess that we sorely missed having an in-room bathtub or, even better, a hotel Jacuzzi on the cold afternoons/evenings when we returned from our excursions (would have used it every day). With a full-service spa in the building, you might think they'd at least have a Jacuzzi guests could use. But no. A magnifying make-up mirror hung face height on the wall would be a nice addition, too. The dressing/closet area lighting is dim. And with the shower "window" opening into the bedroom, any lights turned on in the bath at night spill out into the bedroom. Also, when the bathroom's sliding door (which does not lock) is open, the closet is inaccessible. Easy-to-use, huge, in-room safe for laptop+ while out and about. Only ate one meal in the restaurant. Breakfast. A bit big-city pricey and the Eggs Benedict was just o.k. (too much regular ham rather than Canadian bacon; not enough Hollandaise), but the capuccino was fabulous. Plenty of alternate places for breakfast nearby. All in all, a great stay at a fun, well-located property. We'd definitely return again...but I do hope they add a Jacuzzi somewhere accessible well into the evening.

This is one of the loudest hotels I have ever stayed in. The customer service was horrible. When I called to ask about moving to a room that was quieter they told me I shouldn't be hearing anything. It is in a convenient location but so are many other hotels in Chicago.

Standard upscale hotel with small (20x10ft) rooms and still comfortable. The rooms are chic and probably best suited or honeymooners and couples.

Overnight, valet parking is pricey at $38/night. The showers are nice along with the view. The beds are comfortably soft and pillows huge, but not best for long, back-enduring walks around the loop.

Nearby is Magnificent Mile, shopping, 3:00am bars, and plenty to eat. Please note the rooms Do Not cool below 70F although the thermostat promises better.

Where do I begin? The room was so modern - dark hardwood floor, granite table, flat screen TV, floor to ceiling window overlooking N. State Street. The bed was like sleeping on a cloud with lots of pillows. The shower was my favorite. A huge stall with walls of windows with a rain showerhead. Pull the curtain for privacy between the bedroom and shower stall, or leave it open and have some fun! The honor bar was stocked full of chilled favorites, and the assortment of munchies looked soooo tempting. The free Wifi was much appreciated. The hotel comped $10/day per person for breakfast in their fabulous restaurant Aja. Over the course of 3 mornings, we had something different every day. The food was soooooo good, and the staff was soooo friendly. Better than any comped breakfast I've ever had. You can't beat a real breakfast in a classy restaurant. The downstairs bar was lively on Saturday night. Unfortunately, we never made it to the spa or the lounge at the top, but I'm sure we would've been equally impressed. The location was so convenient - a few blocks from Michigan Ave, close to the Red Line, John Hancock bldg, Water tower. Will I stay there again? In a heartbeat! For the price, location, service, the beautiful room, by far the Dana is the best deal in downtown Chicago!

Bad: 1) dust bunnies in the bathroom barn door, crud in the shower, gashes/scratches on walls 2) can hear EVERYTHING from the hallway
Good: 1) wood floors on 1/2 or room- awesome! 2) great location- 3 blocks from Whole Foods, 6 blocks from Michigan Ave & dining 3) great views- floor to ceiling windows 4) wonderful shower, amenities, beds, sheets 5) has fitness center, but no pool 6) snagged for $180/ night - with taxes- off expedia
Note: the shower has an open glass wall to the bed area, making it very trendy; I loved it, but conservative people may not.
Recommendation: a FANTASTIC find for downtown Chicago- I will stay again. Get turn-town service: yummy snack.

I stayed at the Dana Hotel and Spa for a girls weekend away. The location of the hotel is fantastic, close to it all. We got a good deal for a rate and the rooms are fabulous. The beds are a little hard but I think most people like them that way.

We had some issues with a few minor things, nothing that would make us never stay here again. The biggest issue was no microwave available to guests. We had leftover food and all we wanted to warm up on a cold, rainy day and they were not willing to help us out at all. They only give a few creamer and sugar for the coffee (which the only choices are dark or decaf) and it wasn't enough for two people. We called guest services for more and it took them more then two hours to bring it to us.

The rooms are decent size and I love the wood flooring and floor to ceiling windows. What I don't care for is the fact that the wall between the shower and the room is glass with just a curtain over it. I get it and it would be cool if you were staying in a room with one bed...but for people traveling on business, or in our case, with friends it's a little creepy. I don't need to see shadows of my friends showering. I don't know why they would have that in a room with two beds.

If you have trouble sleeping because of noise, bring your Ambien. On weekends the hotel gets a little loud ( a cab driver told us it's a known party hotel) and the street below is very busy and noisy.

I guess I would say that guest services isn't all it's cracked up to be but I would stay here again if I got a deal on the rate.

Room Tip: get a room on the highest floors for the best view
